I have a photograph I believe was taken around 1903, but nothing to identify date... or those in it. Family has guesses as to children in photo; one would lead to that date, one to much later date. The photo has two little boys dressed with knickers, hi top shoes, shirts with high collars and 'bow' ties, but tie is more like a length of fabric made in a scarf form tied in a bow, and shirts buttoned on the right side, not in the middle like we are used to. I think the shirts should give me a date confirmation, but can't find anything that talks about shirt styles for little boys of either the 1903 date or the later date. Photo was taken by Chicago photographer. Can anyone help identify date of that style of little boys clothing? Anettka
I am trying to be a good mother-in-law. One of my sil has asked for information for his Dad. While I was born in Chicago and my parents lived there until 1976, I left when I married in 1953. His Dad came to Chicago from Maryland to attend a electrical school which he remembers as Coen (I think it might be Coyne, but not sure). The time period is between 1948-51. First he roomed in a boarding house run by a lady whose name was Lola Hendron (alias Granny). When he left there he lived with George and Margaret Kubala at 113 North Menard .. They had two sons at the time, the oldest was named Paul and he does not remember the younger child's name. He kept in touch with Margaret for a while, long enough to know that George was in the Korean Conflict and was wounded. Life kind of gets in the way and he lost touch. But he remembers these folks as such "special people" who played an important part on his journey through life, he would like to know if they or their sons are still alive, so he can thank them again. His education at the school enabled him to find an excellent job in our area. He thought that George was a teacher, perhaps in the Chicago Public Schools, but is not sure. They may have had other children since they were still quite young. My sil's father is almost 77 now and is thinking of these great people. If anyone knows about these folks, please contact me either on the list or privately. I don't have access to a Chicago phone directory and we live in a small town in Maryland, so trying that avenue would not be possible. He's a terrific son in law and I am anxious to help. Thank you for any assistance you can offer. Sophie

Hello, I was wondering if anyone that is familiar with IRAD would explain how it works to those of us that don't understand it. Questions I would have are: What kind of genealogical info. would I be able to get from them? What kind of info. would I have to provide to them? Would I have to know the exact department to which I would have to direct my inquiries? There seems to be alot of them. What is the exact proceedure? Thank you Pauline
It is my understanding that my Grandmother and Grandfather lived in a common law marriage until close to the time of her death(when family found out) and that when she was young she periodically had to get her Green Card renewed. Can anyone give me information on how to find out what information would be available on Green Card records and where I would go to get this information. Maryann
Hi Pauline, Most of your questions can probably be best answered by reviewing this web site: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/irad/neiumap.html Towards the bottom of the page, click on Cook and the City of Chicago [it is a live link], and a discription of the holdings will come up. Thanks to all who answered my request for information on this cemetery. Looks like Dunning is the one I was searching for. Frank
Here is the link to show the IRAD holdings at NEIU (Northeastern Illinois University), which are the records for Cook County and the City of Chicago: http://www.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/IllinoisRegionalArchivesServlet For additional information, write to or call: Illinois Regional Archives Depository Ronald Williams Library Northeastern Illinois University 5500 N. St. Louis Avenue Chicago, IL 60625-4699 Telephone: (773) 442-4506 Map and Directions Hours: Monday Friday, except state holidays 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in June and July, 2006. --> **NOTE: Our regional depositories are staffed by graduate student interns. Because of class scheduling conflicts, hours may vary somewhat from the above schedule. Researchers are urged to call before planning a visit to a depository If you cannot or do not want to visit the facility, you can order records by phone with a maximum of two records per request. Delivery can vary from 4 to 8 weeks. Certainly names must be provided; if you don't have an exact date, I think they might search an estimated year, but check on this before ordering. Last time I was at IRAD at NEIU (about 4 years ago), campus parking for visitors was $5; otherwise, expect a nice long walk if parking offsite. Hope this helps. Good luck! A number of years ago, I submitted data for the 1890 census reconstruction project that was at the following website............... http://www.worldgenealogyproject.bigstep.com/ Does anyone know what happened to the data that is no longer available at this site? Thanks, Judie Mason
Kyanne, Many thanks for your response. There are two people trying to sort out the Bridgeport article and I have received a copy of the Dixon article. I think we have the situation pretty well in hand. Regards, Jim An Archivist wrote: > Jim, > Has anyone filled this request for you yet off-list? Hi Marie I would write them a letter giving them your relationship to your relative and requesting the info that you want. They charged me 25 cents per page copied last year - I received 4 pages for a total cost of $1.00. I feel that this charge was very reasonable. I recently found some of my image files corrupted. Among them were two newspaper articles that I had downloaded from Ancestry when I was a subscriber. Would some kind soul with Ancestry access please download them and send them to me? 1. Illinois - Dixon Evening Telegraph, July 1, 1948 - page 14 2. Volunteering for Circuit Court A couple of months ago someone wrote: << Does anyone know if Cook County is looking for any volunteers to put any information on line? I worked on a project a couple of years ago where the index of deaths was made available and I would be interested in another project like that. (signed) Cheryl >> Yes, Cheryl, I do know of a Volunteering opportunity. There are old bound books in the basement of the Daley Center in Chicago that are filled with Immigration records dating back to about 1909. Each page is filled with the immigrant's name, birth date, place of birth, immigration date, location of immigration, where the immigrant is living at this time, body identification like scars, moles, etc. All this info is being input into a computer program where it will be freely accessed online in the future by any of the categories above. Volunteers are needed to input this information. They are looking for one day a week - as many hours as you wish. Since their environment is county government (circuit court), there is a required background check. Also required, is an orientation given by the Clerk of the Circuit Court's HR dept. This all takes a bit of time. So, in other words, it is not a volunteering situation where one signs up and promptly begins to work. They ask that volunteers donate three or more hours/week. Some people come every other week and work for a longer period of time, this is personal preference. Also, hours to volunteer are Monday thru Friday, 8:30-4:00 (there are no evening or weekend hours). We, also have two volunteers who work in the loop and volunteer for shorter periods of time, more than once a week. Person to contact: - Lois at: lrtravis@cookcountycourt.com Louise S. Delores You can go to the following site to do a look up for records that are held in IRAD, just follow the instructions on this page. The film number is shown as Accession Number and is on the far right for each type of record. http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/iradsrch.html You have to send them a letter requesting a look up for the record(s) that you are interested in. I do not think that the LDS History Centers have copies of these films. Naomi in Illinois > How do I establish this information? Listers: Would someone please look for the current address for what was 3026 Broad St in 1880? How can I learn if there still is a building at the current address? Kathryn Jennings
Jim, Has anyone filled this request for you yet off-list? If not let me know and I will go up and see if I can locate the images for you. What Ancestry does have are the Chicago Voter's registrations for 1888, 1890 and 1892. Since this was prior to suffrage there aren't any women listed but the info in re registered males includes: congressional district; precinct; ward; address; country or state of birth; how long the registrant has lived in the precinct, county and state; and whether he is naturalized, and if so, the date of his papers and name of the court. Cheers, Masugu
Hello all, If I want to obtain the probate record in Cook County of a close relative who died in 1988, and I have the name, address and his date of death, would IRAD have these records, or would I have to contact the City of Chicago? Would this information be available to me, and would you know if there is a charge? Many thanks. Marie
