    2. Paul Kosuth
    3. Hi all, I am interested in finding info pertaining to my fathers family. Elizabeth Bakos married to Edwin and daughter of Mary and John Kossuth. I have the Tribune obituaries but I would like to know if anyone has any census info or address for them. Elizabeth died in 1995. I think that she is either the cousin or aunt of my grandfather Joseph Kossuth (Kosuth). Thank you in advance, Paul Kosuth prkosuth@ll.net

    2. Grace, I, too, washed my hair in the sink when I was younger. We used Rinse Away to detangle our hair, even the boys. It was the same sink on which my mom used to keep Fels Naptha and American Family soap (she used both, not necessarily at the same time). My mom used the soap a lot on me and my brother when we cursed. I still can taste that stuff in my mouth. Yuk!!! 3. My grandfather had a big coal furnace/boiler in the basement to heat the building and next to it stood a much smaller coal fired stove for hot water and for many years we only had hot water on Saturdays. I was too young to remember but I was told that prior to that my grandmother had to heat water for laundry on a rather primitive gas fired stove consisting of two gas burners mounted on cast iron legs. Hope this helps, and by the way, my mother-in-law always said that the only good thing about the "good old days" was that they were gone! Sue

When I swim at the rehabe unit, I do want to get the stuff they put in the water out of my hair, so I shower and wash my hair. We are all different, aren't we. Grace

    3. Hi List So here we go again. When I was young we always had hot water but we didn't always have money for coal, so only had a hot shower occasionally, the cold shower method was get all wet as quickly as possible, turn off shower, lather up, turn shower on and rinse quickly, and dry just as quickly. Total elapsed time, about one and a quarter mins in winter, five or six mins in summer. So there. 3. When I was growing up it was the same--wash hair once a week--it always looked nice--our hot water thing was hooked to the back of our stove and it was a tank but not very big----we were only let put a few inches of hot water in the tub to bathe. I also loved to go to either set of grandparents they let us fill the tub and they had central heat and lots of hot water!!! Now the kids never think of how much hot water they use and take it as a given!! Most do not take baths but showers and use so much more water than we ever did. 2. I actually don't remember not having hot water, but I was born just after WWII ended and my dad returned from duty to the cities only to find there was no place for the three of us to live! So, he and my mom found what used to be a shoemaker's shop in Berwyn - it had cold water only. My dad would constantly tell me how mom used to wash my poopie diapers in cold water. I do remember the venetian blinds and wallpaper they put up, and the rear steps out of our apartment. I was just short of my 4th birthday when we moved across the street to an apartment on the third floor with hot/cold running water! Mom swears the cold water later on caused arthritis in her hands! I also remember the street cars on Ridgeland on 22nd street. But, they were gone around 1950-51. Karen

    3. I was thinking about that very thing. We used to wash our hair in the bathroom sink (dipping method) or while in the bathtub. To this day, I can't stand to wash my hair in the shower...preferring the kitchen sink. (Hope that doesn't gross anyone out.) 3. When I was little I remember a big old hot water heater in the kitchen. It had to be run by gas because there was always a flame beneath it. This was about 1945. We moved around a lot and some places had no hot water heater. Does anyone remember heating water on the kitchen stove to fill the galvanized tub mom put behind the coal stove in the dining room . This was done when we had our weekly baths in the winter, because some "Flats" didn't even have a bathtub. We moved around a lot because the "relief checks were not always on time, and the rent wasn't always paid. My Mom was a widow with 5 children. Let us all praise God for all the abundant blessings He bestows on us in this day and age! Amen! Alice from Dean , Paulina, Elkgrove, Wolcott, Western , and Hirsch Streets or Avenues. These are some of the places we lived.

    2. We have some pictures of the TIMM family who at one time lived in central Illinois. They are beautiful photos of folks in rather expensive clothing and are identified as Timm family and their spouses. Have tried the central Illinois lists but no takers, is anyone in the cook county area a member of this family. Understand Mr. Timm made his money on the grain market in Chicago. Mrs. Timm (widowed) married my husband's gg grandfather Johann Meyer. Thank you. Sophie

    3. I remember our hot water heater being in the kitchen too. Right between the gas stove (which we had to strike a match to light) and the oil burning space heater used to heat the whole flat. Dad rigged up a stove pipe to the front blower of the heater and it ran along the floor in order to heat the living room during the winter. I guess we only used that room during Christmas. Some months, we just closed the living room off and my mom hung clothes to dry in there.

    3. In trying to complete my family history about my seven aunts and uncles who went to Chicago in the early 1900's a second cousin I found sent me a small snapshot of a young girl in her communion dress taken outside of (I think) a bar in Chicago and on the window was painted "McDONNELL"S BAR & RESTUARANT" My cousin thought it once belonged to one of my uncles but not remember which one. I guess the age of the photo is in the 1940's or thereabouts. Later in life all my relatives used the McDonald spelling instead of McDonnell. If any lister has any knowledge of this bar and restaurant and where it was I would be very pleased to hear from them Thank you Michael McDonnell

    3. Jim, Have you tried to e-mail anyone at Ellis Island? If the photo is of something in their collection, they probably had to give permission for its use, and they may have more information on when it was specifically published. Another possibility is that they MAY offer (reissued?) copies of that magazine (or maybe just prints of the cover) in their bookstore/gift shop. We hit LOTS of National Park sites, and they tend to offer items that are very specific to their site (even reprints of Cobblestone magazine for kids). Their web page is: http://www.nps.gov/elis/index.htm and there's an e-mail link on the left-hand side. My husband has had pretty good luck corresponding with NPS locations via e-mail (not regarding something like this), so it might be worth a try. Good luck. We all remember a coal/stoker and boiler for heat, but only one brother remembers a separate "boiler" that heated water. We were raised in Berwyn and remember getting a conversion to gas after WW 2. dolores

I did find a copy of Life that covered the refurbishing of Ellis Island but my relatives were not on the cover. The issue date of the one I found was 9-1-90. The picture I'm looking for depicted a mother holding her child (1 year old and my aunt) along with her husband and their young son. The year was 1907. Supposedly this same picture hangs somewhere in Ellis Island. Unfortunately none of my cousins kept a copy, wrote down the info, nor do they recall exactly when it was published.
