There is a Calhoun North elementary school at 2833 W. Adams which would be one street over from Jackson Blvd and would be by Francisco. The phone number is 773-534-6940. It is from K - 8th grade. If it is a large school it may be between Adams and Jackson. Happy Monday... I've been trying to find the online index for the "Probate Will Index" and "Probate Case Search" databases and cannot seem to find anything older than 1995. Can anyone post the instructions/link? THANKS! Peter U. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. My mother-in-law and her sisters lived in Chicago in those days and were single and dating. I imagine that they attended dances at the Aragon Ballroom. Their name was Haky, they were Helen Haky, Irene Haky, Marge Haky, and Trudy Haky. Grace Thank you so much for the title of the book about the war years in Chicago. I will certainly put that on my wish list too. I lived on the north side of Chicago I met my future husband at the Aragon Ballroom with a group of friends who were saying good-bye to several loved ones, my husband-to-be included. I'm 83 years old but I remember the pink dress that I wore too. Wonderful memories of sad times. We were the lucky ones - my husband came back from two tours of the Pacific. Dorothy
I love the thoughts about the Aragon Ballroom. I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and had never been that "far north". After the war a soldier I had written to [knew his brother but had never met him--found his name on a book plate in a textbook in one of my classes] took me dancing there. I will be 81 next month and I still remember the dress I wore that evening and going to the Brass Rail in the Loop after wards. What a fond memory. I didn't marry him, but we both had happy memories of knowing each other. There is a new book out "Dream When You're Feeling Blue" by an author named Beck that I can't wait to read. It is about the war years in Chicago from a woman's perspective. The reviews sound like it will be a fun book to read. Grace
Hello, Would some kind soul help with an obit look-up. William Sturges: 1943-08-07, Cook Co., Chicago. I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you for you time and energy. Kind reguards, Martha in CA
Grace and Ruth... Thank you both for sharing old memories. I love reading about them. And thank you for the book recommendation. I'll put it on my wish-list. Hello Dorothy, My Mom was a dance instructor at the Aragon and a member of the "21 Club" (is that the correct name? do I have the right number?) in the late 1930's/early 1940's. She was the most graceful person I have ever known. I, on the otherhand, have two left feet...just like my Dad, but that didn't keep her from marrying him! When I was 14 (in 1964) we took the Lawrence Avenue bus one summer Sunday evening...just the two of us (we didn't have a car)...because she wanted to show me the Aragon. The building was locked and dark and, of course, by then the building and the neighborhood had begun to deteriorate. I do recall she and my Dad went to the Aragon for a "reunion" of sorts of the Big Band Days (was that sometime around 1965 or 1966?). I think the bandleader that night might have been Wayne King. Do you recall this? They were given a keepsake photo of the inside of the ballroom in its hey-day and she showed me on the picture where she would always stand. She put that picture into her photo album together with an news article about the Aragon and a clipping about Dick Jurgens who, I believe was her favorite bandleader. My Mom always said those were the most carefree and happiest days of her life. Not that her family took place to the Aragon, but I knew what she meant. How she just loved to reminisce about those days! About the clothes and the music and the elegance of it all! You are so lucky to have been a part of it, too! Sincerely, Ruth Susmarski PS - Mom's maiden name was Helen Borski. Dorothy Cody <wcody@san.rr.com> wrote: I didn't start going to the Aragon Ballroom until about 1940. Thank you so much for mentioning the book about Chicago (Chicago Encycloprdia) I'm going to check it out. I know my sister and I would be interested. The owners of the Aragon Ballroom also owned a ballroom on the south side of Chicago. It was called the Trianon Ballroom. It was suppose to be equally beautiful and was very popular too. Rose - sorry to hear about your shoulder - take care
Hello I did look at the wills and probate index on line for our Gunn family in Evanston. I found a will for Margaret S Gunn died 10 July 1992. I am in Scotland so might be difficult getting more information. I would also love to find an obituary Kay >
Hi List, Can anyone see if there is the obits for these two guys. GRASKE, Arthur, died 9 May 1927 Chicago GRASKE, William, died 15 Oct 1926 Chicago I am looking to see if one of these two men may have been the husband to Minnie Unknown Jensen Graske. Her maiden name nmay have been Eiglebrecht. She had one son Donald Jensen born abt 1905 that may also be listed in the obit. Minnie is listed with her son in 1930 as a widow Minnie Graske. Looking at the IL Death Index, these two are the only ones that fall in the time frame. Thanks Laurie
