There's a really nice poster of the transportation building at this site http://tinyurl.com/3cftrc Also, check out the encyclopedia of chicago http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/225.html for an interactive photo - you can enlarge it and look at different building details more closely. this one has a postcard of the hotel sherman, where the contest was held. http://www.patsabin.com/illinois/sherman.htm If you do a search at google.com and click on images, there are a ton of links for photos of these 2 places now that we know where the event took place. This reply is a bit off-topic but I will reply to the list as the original comment was made on the Cook-Co list. It's understandable how you might have arrived at this conclusion but it is not exactly accurate. Wikipedia is both moderated and has posting standards which must be met. I believe each contribution may be reviewed by experts before it is posted. And even then corrections can be edited. Every once in a while an editorial note appears something like: "This submission needs to be cleaned up." or "This is a published Stub. Please add material to it." The latter meaning it is in process. I have found it to be entirely accurate and usually delightfully easy to read and understand. It is usually not heavy in academic mathematics and is readily accessible to most casual readers. I agree, and recall the articles about the bogus contributor, I don't think he even used his correct name. I use Wikipedia a great deal. I do not think it is the source of all sources, but I admit that I enjoy using it (and of course Google clearly gives it top priority when returning hits). This is a long shot but could someone possibly look for a death notice/obituary for: George H. Sandberg Born: About 1889 in Norway Died: After 1944 Husband of the late Florence M. Sandberg; father of Kenneth Sandberg and Marjorie Sandberg Helmick. He was still living in 1944 when his wife passed away. I already have her obituary. Thanks, Lois is CA
Many if not all schools will no long accept Wikipedia as a valid source for information. I read recently of submissions by someone who had listed credentials a mile long only to find he had never gone past high school. (not that it necessarily means his research wasn't correct, but if someone lies about one thing....) I too enjoy the site. I recently found a photo of my parish church and believe it to have been taken my father. That was fun! So just beware. -----Original Message----- From: cook-co-il-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cook-co-il-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of hbusey@att.net Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 10:59 AM To: cook-co-il@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COOK-CO-IL] Wikipedia This reply is a bit off-topic but I will reply to the list as the original comment was made on the Cook-Co list. Hi Molly, Here's some internet sites on Chicago's 100th Birthday Party, the 1933-34 Century of Progress International Exposition: http://www.chicagohs.org/history/century.html For Wikipedia fans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_of_Progress http://www.the-forum.com/collect/wf3.htm http://hometown.aol.com/chicfair/ http://century.lib.uchicago.edu/ I couldn't find anything on a typing or transcriber contest, just a canning contest and a few others at the University of Chicago website.
