    2. Karen, I would write to the Cook County Clerk David Orr. The Coroner Inquest records only go up to 1911 at Northeastern IRAD office, so your best best would be David Orr. You can conatct him at http://www.cookcountyclerk.com/Pages/default.aspx  or Cook County Clerk David Orr 69 W. Washington, Suite 500 Chicago, IL 60602  Bill

    3. There are no Cook County death records online at this time. Instead, they can be ordered inexpensively online through chicagogenealogy.com or mollx.com. Death records are indexed in Illinois Archives: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html Illinois Statewide Death Index, Pre–1916 http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/deathsrch.html Regards, Mary [email protected] wrote: > > Are there any free online death records for Chicago where we can actually > see and print out the record? 3. Listers, Several people replied to my request and I have thanked them personally. For the past few years, I have not been reading the list since, for the most part, I have completed my Chicago research. I have been writing the history of my family and organizing photographs and memories from family members. This week, I discovered that I had lost (or somehow deleted the records I requested) that I needed to complete my current chapter. Hopefully, the information about footnote.com will help others too. Thanks again, Lila

    3. For those of us without individual subscriptions to Ancestry, below is an email I received from the Reference Librarian at my local library.  I was surprised to learn about the collections NOT included in Ancestry's Library Edition.  I had been under the impression that the Library Edition was the most comprehensive available.  Apparently not.   The item I was looking for over the weekend, on which several listers helped me out yesterday, was in the "Family and Local Histories" collection.   Ruth --- On Mon, 3/22/10, Christina Tropea <[email protected]> wrote: From: Christina Tropea <[email protected]> Subject: Your question about Ancestry Library Edition To: "'[email protected]'" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, March 22, 2010, 2:37 PM Hello Ruth,   I spoke with Ancestry today and they gave me a list of what is not included in library subscriptions. 1. [COOK-CO-IL] Illinois Dept. of Corrections Records
    2. Joseph Martin
    3. Fellow Researchers, In the November 2009 issue of *Family Tree Magazine* David Fryxell published the article, "The Usual Suspects," about family members who were felons or who had a criminal past. He wrote: "In some states the department of corrections holds onto historical records. The Illinois Department of Corrections will search convict kin for no charge. Go to the department's web site www.idoc.state.il.us and click on IDOC Webmaster to bring up an email form where you can fill in as much as you know about your ancestor." Last Tuesday I submitted an email for someone barely related, but I know of a descendant who is researching the family. That was last Tuesday. Today I received two documents by snail mail from the IL Department of Corrections for both times this man was convicted. The documents include name, number, institution, county, crime, term, date sentenced, date received, date paroled, date discharged. The service was exceptionally prompt. This man received 1 to 20 years for a 1921 burglary in Cook County which he served in Joliet, and he was paroled after serving just over two years. Then he received 21 years for a 1938 murder in Cook County which he served in Pontiac. He was paroled in 1949 after serving over 10 years. He died 8 months later, so perhaps his health was the reason for his parole. Just in case you missed the article and have someone in your family. The search and the documents are free. The IDOC webmaster link is at the very bottom of the web page. Joseph Martin Romeoville, Illinois -- "Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does!"
