    3. Donna, Bridewell was the first Chicago city jail. It was at the corner of Polk and Wells streets. My great-great grandfather, David Walsh, was the first Keeper of the Bridewell, approved by the City Council in 1856. The city jail was later moved to another location. Nancy Thomas

    3. Because other's may be interested, I'm copying all my notes on BRIDEWELL ... No "S" in the middle. My aunt's brother was the warden at Bridewell, a correctional institution. This explains the clever woodworking pieces we received as gifts from our grandmother, who evidently purchased them through her sister-in-law. A tall wooden giraffe was a clothes rack, painted yellow with brown spots and just the right height for a child to hang their clothes, was one of the items. One was a child's rocker sort of like a boat you sat in which was shaped like a duck. These were evidently maide by inmates at Bridewell and sold through their giftstore (?). I am seeking information on a Mr. Kielminski who was warden at Bridewell Prison in Chicago during late 1930's and early 1940's. Reason: his sister was a relative. I always wondered why I had these and then found that Mr. Klieminski (could be spelled Kliminski)was the person in charge at Bridewell. This prision at 26th Street and California Ave. was changed to Cook County Jail in the 1980s. Now is used for holding until trial those accused of serious crimes. 1. [COOK-CO-IL] RUST Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lina RUST which was taken at the Loomis Studio in Chicago, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Lina likely in her 30's or 40's at the time the photograph was taken. In addition to her name, someone has written "Frank" on the back of the photograph as if that was the person to whom the photograph was given. I am hoping to locate someone from this RUST Family so that the photograph can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    2. Bonita Evjen
    3. I am looking for information about a family that lived in Cook Co from about 1910 to 1940. The parents, Jerry & Catherine Reedy died in 1932 and 1937 respectively in Chicago. They had 7 children John Thomas 1903 to 1942, William James, 1904 to 1974, Bridget THERESA 1905 to 1938?, Robert Patrick 1907 to 1984,Jerome Vincent 1911 to 1935, Joseph Francis 1914 to 1960, and Rosemary Theresa 1918 to 1993. According to family history this family contracted TB when the children were young from a sick relative. At least 3 died from complication of the disease. The only one of the children that I can't find is Theresa. According to family history she died in 1938 from TB. She was single. I can't find her in Illinois. If someone had TB at that time would they go to a sanitarium??? Are there any in WI near Chicago???? I don't know where else to look Bonni in MN Any Society that would give up liberty for a little security, will deserve neither and lose both. Benjamin Franklin 1759

    3. Kathy, Here is an excerpt from the CNW Historical Society: "Since the collection is warehoused, only very limited access to the material is possible. Those wishing to obtain data on C&NW employees can make an e-mail ([email protected]) or a postal mail (Craig Pfannkuche, 8612 Memory Trail, Wonder Lake, Illinois 60097) request. Stamped, self addressed reply envelopes are appreciated since the collection is maintained by Society dues and donations and is staffed by volunteers. Look ups are done "as time allows". There is no charge for doing personnel look up work." Craig is an excellent source for RR information. I wrote to him some years ago and he kindly checked his records for my C&NW ancestor. The BLE doesn't have old records. However, I have purchased a couple of old BLE journals that had my great grandfather's name, as he was secretary of one of the chapters on Milwaukee Ave. Bart

    3. I have converted the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index at http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html into GEDCOM files, which can be imported into any genealogy software and can be read by a variety of utilities. The files are available for free at http://GedcomLibrary.com/vitals.html I have also added the index to the SortedByName.com site, which means you can now search by Soundex (but there's also all the other material that was already in there, of course.) SortedByName.com now has over 11,000,000 entries and the site is totally free. Tom Alciere

    1. [COOK-CO-IL] Dreamland Roller Club & B L of E
    2. Kathy Stonecipher
    3. Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the Dreamland Roller Club and/or B L of E. I just found some pins that were in the possession of my great-grandfather when he died in 1946, with these clubs or society names on them. He died in Alabama at the age of 86, but he had lived in Chicago and Wisconsin. He had worked for the CNW railroad, but I wondered if B L of E was another railroad line. The first one says: Past C E Division 4-04 B L of E (the B L of E is on what look like a flower The second one is a white round letter with the letters B L of E (the B is in gold, the L is in white and the E is blue The third pin is round with a white center and a blue edge. The blue edge has gold letters that say Dreamland Roller Club Chicago In the center in gold is a picture of a roller skate with wings and the letters D R C I would guess this last pin has something to do with roller skating. The only information I found regarding Dreamland Roller CLub had to doe with Dance and Roller Skating Clubs. Thanks, Kathy
