    1. [COOK-CO-IL] Cannot find birth certificate for mother
    2. Diane Miskiewicz
    3. I also was at a loss until the FAMILY SEARCH PILOT website came on.  Found out the mother who we always knew had the name Elsie was, at birth, named Mary by her mother and father in 1915. Showed up with me just typing in the last name. My sister and I surprised.  In fact, I said remember when mom tried to get her birth certificate from Cook County (to get a passport to go to Ireland)they couldn't find "Elsie". Goes to show if they didn't like the name Mary that they named her let's just change it to Elsie - without ever doing it legally. I guess it keeps people on their toes while doing genealogy.  Happy Hunting everyone.   Diane

    1. Re: [COOK-CO-IL] Missing Death Record
    2. Oh no! The headstones were removed? Sorry to hear that...and that may be bad news for me too. I have a family Bible record with the names and death dates of three "mystery people" who must have been relatives, since they were listed and the surname is one of the family surnames. Unfortunately no birth dates were given. They were buried at Graceland; the family record even gives the grave locations. These people died in the 1860s, so death records will not be available. I suspect they may be children that died young, but I don't know for sure. One person had the same name as the father of an immigrant ancestor, but I don't know if the father came over and died in Chicago, or if a son or brother was named after him. I'm hoping that the graves at Graceland will have headstones that include birth dates for these people, because I would like to figure out who they were. Hi Kathy, I thought it might help to look in the newspaper, but unfortunately, I found several obituaries which said "resting at Funeral Home Linden Ave & Tower Rd" Perhaps it was a well known place, and someone here will know the name. You might try calling the home you found - they may know the name of the one you are looking for. Also, try the library. I'll let you know if I find anything else. 3. Beth and Sheila, Could recording a birth be dependent on whether or not the birth had a midwife or doctor?  I think they did the registering.  If the child were born without a doctor/midwife, could be no record was made.  There may be a church record of a baptism somewhere.  Or a mention in the Trib Archives?  Just my thoughts on why there may be no record. Why not try again and ask the list?  Could be there are new sites or new people on the list who might have insights.
