    1. Re: [COOK-CO-IL] Birth and Marriage Records ca 1891 - Who is the wife/mother?
    2. Sharon Rauworth
    3. Hi Elaine, I checked the Illinois Statewide Death Index, Pre-1916 and found a couple that might be possibilities for George T. (Jr.) mother. There was a Mary SHIELDS who died 1893-05-10 in Chicago at the age of 35. Certificate # 00017807 in Cook County. There us also a long shot of Elizabeth SHIELDS who died 1895-11-27 in Chicago at the age of 28. Certificate # 00018256 in Cook County. You might check to see if anyone could find obituaries on either one of them to see if they might tell you more information. Hope these might be of help to you. Sharon

    1. [COOK-CO-IL] Birth and Marriage Records ca 1891 - Who is the wife/mother?
    2. "E" Sharp
    3. I have been to this site before and I'm back.... Here is my dilemma and it is the only brick wall left in my research of our Shields family. George T. Shields (Sr) was born in Lockport, Will County, 1861 and died June 21, 1891, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His death record says he is married but does not give the name of his wife. He was living at 172 W. Vanburen, Chicago when he died. Chicago directory records I have found have him living in Chicago in 1888, 1890, 1891. In Lockport, Will County, where he was born and where the rest of his family lived, there is no record of a marriage for him so I can only assume he married in Chicago ca 1888-1890. I need some guidance on if/how/where to pursue a marriage record for him in Cook Co. He is not the George Shields who married Mary Harvey in Will County. His son George T. Shields (Jr) was born Jan 9, 1891, in Chicago (a few months before his father died). His 1943 death record does not give the name of his mother. His marriage record does not give the name of his mother. His WWI Draft Registration Record does not give the name of his mother. In 1900 census, George (Jr) is living with the family of his father in Lockport and was brought up by them. Where is his mother? Did she die? Did she abandon him? So, I also need some guidance on if/how/where I should pursue a birth record for him. Our ultimate goal -- to find the wife of George T. Shields (Sr), therefore, mother of George T. Shields (Jr). Thank you. Elaine Sharp Sacramento CA

    3. Hi Beth I wish you luck and just hope that your family is in a row that didn't have the headstones removed. My brother flew up from San Francisco and we flew over from England, primarily to see that grave. My husband used to say, how about visiting Chicago, but I never fancied it. How glad I am to have changed my mind, after I found out that my family were there! What a wonderful city and great citizens. I have a photocopy of the grave plan and will always be grateful to the lady at Gracelands Cemetery. She is no longer there, I was told when we called in. The ironic thing is that in the 1960's my brother left Edinburgh University in Scotland, went to university in Minnesota then worked in Chicago. Now we wonder if the grave was intact then. This line of my family has proved to be extremely difficult to trace, but I shall be forever grateful to several Americans who helped me gain a lot of information. You said you didn't have birth dates. Well neither did I but on the grave plan, as I said before, the exact ages were given, and the dates when they died, so I worked backwards and had the dates of birth. Good luck to you if you should visit the grave at Gracelands. You could of course telephone and ask them if the headstone is still there. Sheila. [email protected] wrote: > Oh no! 2. Thanks everyone for your input. I know she died here in Chicago in 1962. I know she was buried 05 May 1962.   I have emailed Cook County through aforementioned site.  Have to wait 7-10 days.  If they don't respond favorably, I'll write a letter with a SASE. The cemetery gave me the funeral director's name.  Unfortunately, it changed hands in 1991 and no previous record were kept.  The previous owner has since passed on himself.  I'm told by several funeral homes that they are not required by law to retain records.  boo woo. My great-grandmother, CORA HENDERSON,  was 108 when she died,  She was born in 1854 in Arkansas.  Her name does not seem to be one that would be mis-spelled. I'm sure she died of old age.  That's obvious.  I just want copy of her death record for my genealogy files to prove she did exist as there's no chance a record of her birth was made. Thanks again.  Each and everyone of you are so appreciated. E. Stewart

    3. It took a while to find my granmothers birth record but finally realized that it was under her mothers name, it may have been that she was not named at the time of the certificate. Also could not find my fathers birth certificate-did not need to be recorded at that time-but was in the church records. He was in the Navy and had to show some type of record, so not sure at this point what he used. I have searched for years without any luck. Once in while still go back to the sites to check if they had been updated. No luck. Still cannot find his SS number or SS that my mother received after he died in 1961, when he was 48. 3. Good points, Michele, especially about the middle initial being attached to the surname.   I always remember a distant relative's entry on the FamilySearch SSDI.  The name should have been STEVE CHWASCINSKI, but, at some point fingers got shifted on the keyboard, and the name appears STEVE CHWASCUBSKI.  Being as Steve was from Illinois, if he was a baseball fan, he might not have minded the CHWAS-CUBS-KI entry.   :)   Ruth --- On Tue, 7/20/10, Michele <[email protected]> wrote: From: Michele <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [COOK-CO-IL] Missing Death Record To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 12:57 PM What I have found is that there is no name that cannot be misspelled by someone, at least as a typo.  Sometimes letter get reversed so you could get something like Hednerson or Hendesron, for example.  Depending on how the person wrote the H, it could even look like Fl.  The letter d written in a stretched out way can look like 'cl'.  N can look like u.  Another thing that happens that I read about is for the middle initial to be attached to the surname instead of being separated by a space.  It is interesting to go through large indexes like the SSDI or others experimenting with each letter of the alphabet attached to the beginning of the last name.  AHenderson, BHenderson, etc.  I tried this years ago and was surprised how many can be found like that although they may have improved the indexes since then and it certainly may not be the case here and I haven't tried it with the Chicago indexes. 2. Ruth Susmarski
    3. If I haven't mentioned this before, let me do so now.   My Mom appears in the Cook County Birth Register, but the Birth Register Index on the LDS pilot site shows the wrong set of parents for her.   When I opened the Register image and looked closer, it became apparent that nearly every entry on the page had the same error.  I'm assuming, and it appears, that when the transcriber crossed from the left page (containing the child's name) to the right page (containing the parents' names), he/she shifted down an entry.   I contacted FamilySearch, but was told there is no way this error can be corrected.  As much as it bothers me each time I see my Mom's entry, I would not mention it if it were an isolated case.  However, I have since found two other separate instances on the Birth Register Index where the same thing occurred.   Keep this in mind when you're looking for your family, because, while the child's birth name may appear correct, don't be put off if the parents' names are different than you know or expect they should be.  Open the actual image and check it out.   Ruth

Back in the day, if a child was baptized in the Catholic Church, they were expected to be given the name of a Saint.  Many priests refused to baptize a child.  Not saying "Elsie" was Catholic, but if she was, I don't think there was a Saint Elsie.  With "Mary" you don't get much more saintly than that!   My Aunt Ruth was born in 1921.  Grandma Katherine wanted her youngest daughter baptized "Ruth Katherine," and that is how she went through life, but lo and behold, there is no Saint Ruth and her baptismal record reads "Catherine Ruth."    Ruth Katherine (guess who I'm named after!) --- On Tue, 7/20/10, Diane Miskiewicz <[email protected]> wrote: From: Diane Miskiewicz <[email protected]> Subject: [COOK-CO-IL] Cannot find birth certificate for mother To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, July 20, 2010, 11:53 AM I also was at a loss until the FAMILY SEARCH PILOT website came on.  Found out the mother who we always knew had the name Elsie was, at birth, named Mary by her mother and father in 1915.
