Thank you, Masugu. Great sleuting - but as far as I know our George T. Shields (Sr) and his wife had only one child, George T. Shields (Jr). Unless these other children were from a previous marriage of Katherine(Carroll) Shields, I think it's not her, but I am not ready to rule anything out at this point, especially the way the son's name is listed in the obit, so I thank you again for your input. Hard to verify hearsay story. Would still have to find all documentation with name used. Is he listed in Ancestry's border crossings? What was his first name? Wife? Any dates of birth, death, marriage? Not listed at Cook County's Declaration of Intent page; can contact the Clerk's office or Great Lakes NARA. Was there a death certificate for him? Patricia, Unfortunately I have no funds to pull death cert for Augusta & Amelia in Illinois. They died before SSDI. Augusta died Feb 24,1942 in Winnetka & Amelia died March 1, 1953 in Winnetka. Charles 1954 Janesville, Rock Co. WI death cert I had hand transcribed-Mother was listed as Ernestine Buntman. No father listed on anything for Charles. We believe Father was Gottlieb. IF we have correct Albertina Krause her death cert does not list her maiden name-Cem says they have no record of it. Death Notice from Chicago paper says nothing. Only 1 child had a birth listed on Family Search Pilot & mother was listed as Albertina Krause. As for Affeldt- Gustave & Wilhelmina Garske Affeldt came to Ill abt 1881 or 1882 with Gustave's 5 children by 1st wife & 1 child by Garske, stayed about 2 years before going to WI. His sister Louise Affeldt came over in the early 1870's to Chicago & married William Nitzschke. They remained in Chicago. Supposedly another UNPROVEN as yet sister Ernestine Affeldt came over in the late 1860's or 1870. She may have come to Chicago before going to WI. She married Edward Bandmann in WI or Il. She was in WI by 1871 since child was born then in WI. 2nd marriage to Gustave's brother Herman spent time in Chicago before going to WI. We believe more siblings of Gustav, Herman, Louise & possibly Ernestine may exist. They would be born in mid 1830's to 1850's & would have been from Deutch Krone area. Gustav & Herman were born in Arnsfelde or Arensfelde, Deutch Krone along with most of Gustaves children with some supposedly born in Berlin. Kathy From: patricia meyers [mailto:[email protected]] Did any of this family have a social security number? I think the maiden name will show up on the application. Can you give some dates as a point of reference? Did you pull their death certificates? Patti _____ From: Kathy Fuhrman <[email protected]> Thank you AnnEllen, I am trying to obtain Augusta Krause (Louis) Affeldt, Amelia Krause (William H.) Burgdorf mother's maiden name. So far cemeteries will tell me nothing, except burial location. Augusta-no idea what church she was buried from. Obit does not say. Amelia obit lists church but no parents names are listed in the records. Funeral Home will not tell me parents names or IF they were listed. Says it is against the law to tell me. The brother Charles Krause- obit, Funeral home, church & cem all indicate mother was Ernestine Buntman or Buntsman yet IF I have correct census that info & other info seems to indicate she was Albertina Bandmann Krause. Still waiting for the church the ladies were married in to respond. I am also trying to work on my Affeldt line that has connections to Chicago & Outagamie County, Wisconsin. Kathy
Just as a point of information - the current Ancestry.com weekly newsletter has an article on "13 Sources for Birth Information Beyond Civil Registration." http://learn.ancestry.com/LearnMore/Article.aspx?id=15626 Perhaps it will be helpful to readers here. Dear Listers, Is there anyone who could look for and send me, if found, an obituary for Helen Reichel who died in Chicago in August 1981? The zip code at her death was 60656. Thanks. Daryl Ann
Listers, I mistakenly sent this directly to Shirley along with another suggestion of finding a Polish American mailing list or message board for help. I'm forwarding it to the Cook List in hopes that someone will know more about the newspaper than I do & can point her in the right direction. Judy in Alaska ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: judy petersen <[email protected]> Date: Jul 22, 2010 11:05 AM Subject: Re: [COOK-CO-IL] I need suggestions.. To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Another suggestion, Shirley. The Polish American community in Chicago could speak to this better than I can, but I think there was a Polish American newspaper in Chicago which now has an obit index, similar to the one Czechs have with our "Denni Hlasatel". If you have no other leads to the original surname, check the obits in that newspaper, possibly available on microfilm. If it's like the Denni Hlasatel index, it is organized by surname & then death date, & you order the microfilm by death date. You could even scan thru the "S" names for similar sounding names. Also, I think there is a Polish American genealogy society in IL or at least in the nation. It might help to join them or see what they have to offer. Your only alternative would be to contact the Cemetery where the person was buried or find the obit in one of the newspapers of the time And use that as a pointer to possible other records. Sometimes, if a funeral home is taken over/purchased by one that continues in the same location, The records stay in the basement or such and may be accessed but no guarantee of that. Wish I had some better news for you but that is how it is. Perhaps posting an inquiry on this site about the family name you are seeking would elicit a response from Someone collaterally related. Elaine, the obit below may not be for the wife of your George Shields. In the obit re Mrs. John Simpson: John J. Simpson wed Mary T. Shields on 9-30-1918 (birth years for both given as 1894) In the obit re Mrs. Robert McAneney: Robert Thomas McAneney wed Catherine E. Shields on 9-10-1919 (birth years - groom, 1891; bride, 1895) Both marriages took place at St. Bernard's Parish. Did not find a marriage for Mrs. A. A. Glaab. Are you 100% sure the George Shields who died in 1891 is "your" George Shields? Hello, Yesterday I was browsing through images at the LDS pilot site, specifically in the Netherlands Civil Registration, which were organized by geographic location, record type(birth, marriage and death) and year. This morning the image description is gone; replaced by a "digital film number" or "digital folder number." I tried browsing through the Cook County records and found no image descriptions only digital film numbers. My question is: where is the guide that shows what digital film number corresponds to what geographic area and record type? Dave Otto
Patricia, Thanks for the additional input. Guess I need to do more research on these other children of Katherine (Carroll) Shields and if they were born after our George died, then she would not be the one. If they were born before, then a possibility and maybe a reason she gave George (Jr) to paternal grandmother to raise. Back to census records............................. SHEILS, GEORGE CARROLL, KATHARINE 1891-04-09 / 00164592 COOK To add to Masugu's information....if this is the right George, marriage took place just before George T. died in June 1891 and Junior was born. Does anyone know where the 1942 records may be kept for a "BRUECKS" Funeral Home at Linden Ave & Tower Rd, Hubbard Woods, Il? Thank you, Kathy
I had an opportunity a couple/few years ago to speak with a supervisor at Cook County Vital Records who said their birth register request procedure was to check the index for dates and certificate numbers (a three year search), then check for the certificate (although a birth was recorded, there may not be a certificate) and lastly to check the actual birth register. I've found many, many births in the registers paid for and that CCVR had previously told me there was no record found. The registers are on film at the LDS Family History Centers. They are in chronological order and contain the same information that would have been on the birth certificate. It's not an easy search because of the hand written entries but, is well worth the effort. I would be thinking infectious disease by now, wondering if there were multiple deaths in the family. But meantime try looking for a marriage for a Shield woman something might pop.
