Does anyone know how to figure out what street address someone lived at based on their entry in the 1870 or 1880 census records? I mean, I have the ward # for 1880, for example, but it appears that in the 1880 Census they didn't write down the street name & number of each dwelling they visited. Thanks, Claire
Hi Joseph, Rocco's obituary falls into the "black hole" that is the Chicago Tribune Obituary Index - 1988-1997. Obits on this index will not be found online. Here is a little bit about the Index: About Chicago Tribune, Obituary Index, 1988-1997 Chicago, Illinois, lies on the shores of Lake Michigan and is one of the largest cities in the U.S. This database is an index to the death notices that appeared in the Chicago Tribune between 1988 and 1997. Researchers will find the information necessary for locating the original obituary. It is important to note that if an obituary appeared in both the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune, it will only be noted in the index for the Tribune. For those interested in Chicago research, this will be a useful database. I'll be going to the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, which has the Chicago Tribune on microfilm, tomorrow or sometime next week, . Send me your address off-list, and I will look it up and send it to you. I have a marriage license for Peter Fleseras, my ancestor, who married Louise Miller on 27 June 1901. The clergyman who performed the ceremony signed his name but it is hard to read -- https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11605-34590-54?cc=1463145 (actual license image) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MZH1-J95/p4 (text version) I am trying to figure out which St. Andrew was the church they married in. I saw on the web that St. Andrew (Greek Orthodox) opened its doors in 1926 while St. Andrew (Catholic) began in 1895 at Addison and Paulina Streets. Since the marriage was in 1901, this would weigh in on the Catholic St. Andrew being the one. But someone checked the St.Andrews Parish records for me and couldn't located this couple: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://hr-search-api:8080/searchapi/search/collection/1452409 Catholics don't use "clergyman" on licenses; they use "priest". Also I haven't seen "rector" often used on Catholic documents. So this leads me in the direction of the Greek Orthodox St. Andrew. Also Peter was Greek. Any help will be so appreciated.
The fact that he was Greek and the certificate was signed "clergyman" tip me toward Greek Orthodox as well. Why don't you call the office of the Metropolis of Chicago, 312-337-4130, and ask whether there was an earlier St. Andrews that changed names or ceased to function before the 1926 St. Andrews. Diane
I took a look and didn't get an obit. How did you find it? I found his (assuming here *G*) naturalization and a marriage but no hits at all in newspapers. eliz On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 2:17 PM, Joseph Martin <illinoisgenie@gmail.com> wrote: > I would appreciate any help to obtain a copy of the obituary for Rocco F. > Laraia whose 1993 obituary appears on Ancestry.com under the Chicago Tribune > Obituary Index. > > Thank you for considering this request. > > Joseph Martin > Romeoville, Illinois > > -- > Adam and Eve must have found genealogy very boring. > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to COOK-CO-IL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

Also found this: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%22Chicago%20%28Ill.%29%20--%20Directories%22%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts You can search the list of churches in the directories. Also this. Lots of links for directories -- some free! http://www.chicagogenealogy.org/links.html I think it's easy to forget what's out there. Or not realize what is. I am adding to my fav list. I think I have mostly found what I was looking for, but I also helped others in the process. When you find a handy dandy website as you do your own searching, please post it on the Cook list. It might help some other researchers. For info on a specific church, you can also google the name. I found some online history books for some M.E. churches, as well as photos. Some books you may need to try finding via worldcat.org. That site tells you what libraries have a particular book. Also, I found it's important to keep in mind that an area may have been annexed into a city at a later date. That can cause confusion while doing research. So something good to know! I know about the book for the Catholic churches, with the maps. It would be nice to have one for Protestant churches too. Newberry Library has a map and a partial list that might be useful to some, on their website. I found some info on the church. It used to be in Austin, IL. Then Austin became a part of Chicago. In 1937, the address for the church was Central and Race Avenues. 1937 was their 70th anniversary, so that would be 1867 that it was started. Back to searching . . . . Hi Cook-sters! My father attended Anderson Elementary School, from "about" 1926-1934." He was born in 1921, not sure if there was a kindergarten at the school or not. I have no childhood photos of my father, but was wondering if anyone on the list has family members that attended that school in the old neighborhood (Milwauke/Ashland/Division). That neighborhood is as old as it gets! Does anyone know if the school took class photos back then, or graduation photos? Would appreciate hearing from anyone on the subject, school, neighborhood. Thanks much, Gloria Buczak-Fasholz
I bought an old yearbook from Von Steuben and happened to notice a graduation program stuck in the back. It's from Austin High school in 1943. If anyone is interested in having it, please let me know. I would be happy to send it to you. Jackye Sullins
