Dear COOK Cousins: I need your help. My dilemma - I am unable to find my gggrandfather's place of birth or his parents. My ggGrandfather Horatio Ross COOK, MD, a.k.a. H.R. COOK, MD, b. Mar. 20, 1818 and d. Feb. 10, 1886 according to the grave marker. He graduated from the Georgia Medical College (Augusta) in 1841 and practiced medicine in Beech Island, SC across the river from Augusta, GA until his death. I have the following: The Census Reports of 1850, 1860, 1870 record New Jersey as place of birth. The college records were destroyed during the Civil War but his graduation is recorded. I have public records noting him as a Planter (Farmer), Civic Organizations and a bill dated 1885 for medical services rendered. My search has started in reviewing medical journals of listed physicians during 1850 - 1886 and have reviewed: Medical Obituaries: American Physicians' Biographical Notices in Selected Journals before 1907 A History of Medicine in SC 1825 - 1900 I ask that you remember Horatio Ross COOK, MD, the next time you are in your Reference Department. Like many of our cousins, the local library references have been exhausted. For me, the Archives and History in Columbia, SC is 600 miles away. I welcome any suggestion(s) you may have. Believe me, I am at the wall. Thanks, Edward A. Cook
