I'm interested in any available information on the 16th Infantry Regiment, Maine Volunteers. The following is my connection. Edward is my ggrandfather. Edward C. Cooks military service. Served in Civil War in 16th, then 20th Infantry Regiment, Maine Volunteers. Drafted Oct. 13, 1864 into Co. C, 16th Inf. Regt. Suffered from rheumatism and chronic diarrhea. Hospitalized at 3rd Div. Hospital, 5th Army Corps, Hatchers Run, Feb. 1865, 4 or 5 weeks. Again at Field Hospital, Arlington Heights, May 16, 1865 until discharge. Transferred to Company K, 20th Inf. Reg. June 5, 1865. Mustered out July 27, 1865. He received a disability pension of $12/mo. I have extracted the above directly from the records from the National Archives. Not quite an illustrious military career. I do not know what part the 16th Infantry Regiment played in the war. Edward was in the 16th, fit and on his feet for no more than 6 months, some of which probably included training, as about 2 months of that time was spent in hospital. Edwards transfer to the 20th took place while he was hospitalized. And from the hospital he was mustered out. So he would have seen no actual service with the 20th. While I can find nothing written on the 16th Maine, I find it interesting that Edward was hospitalized at Hatchers Run right about the time the 20th Maine suffered a major defeat there, losing 24 men.
