How I wish it were possible to have a direct male Cook descendant in my branch. I know of none at all. But it’s fun to find out about the other Cooks. Marilyn, Thanks for the hail. One way to find out about this for sure, is DNA, Y chromosome. I have had this done through/Cookfamilygenealogy/FTDNA( family tree DNA) @ FTDNA.com or cookfamilygenealogy.com who is affiliated with ftdna.com. What we need is a willing MALE who is a Cook in the direct line of descendancy of the ancestors in question, ie: John Cook-Jonas and or Elbert. I am on the data base, my brother is as well. The Y chromo is a 'male club only thing' but it is a standard used these to determine surname familial relationships. In your case, because there seems to be a strong possibility of a match, I would be willing to pay for the basic 12 marker panel to establish whether there is a base line surname relationship or not. Let me know if you have anybody that would be willing to do this, its not blood, its a mouth swab, cheek cells. Nothing ghastly. They send out a kit to an address, he does the swabs with a little plastic sterile fork and puts it in a fixitive test tube provided and mails it back in a pre-paid envelope. They include all instructions. Speaking of Horace Cook. I have a Horce Cook in my line. He was a child of Norman the second and Mary E. Green-Cook. Horace was an important name to my Gr.Gr Grandfather as he named all his 10 living children important family names it seems. Horace Gilbert Cook lived most of his life in western MO, after being raised in eastern Iowa, then S.W. Iowa. I have a collaborater, an older woman, who was his grandaughter , she is now about 78 and has been a great source for information on the family. She has done DNA as it regards her father and maternal line, MtDNA. Of course she cant supply anything like Y-DNA for these purposes. I have been searching for some MALE in a promising line for research. Also, there is another man , one Gurdon Wadsworth Cook(e). He lived in Litchfield CT also, he also migrated to Lima at the same times as the others did and I have a belief he is also a related male in our Cook line. I dont know if he is a father, Uncle, brother or cousin, but I do know he married a "Gilbert". Another mystery ! My tree is at rootsweb.com, type in Norman W. Cook and go from there. I have a strong feeling that some of us are definitely connected! A while back there were some Cooks too that wrote in, and I'm sure there is a connection somewhere. My ancestor Elisha Cook lived in NY for a time. He was listed as being in Oneida County in 1800. He had a son Horace Cook born in Oneida County, NY, in 1813. Later, Elisha lived in Erie County, PA in 1830 and 1840. Elisha Cook must have died in or near Erie County, PA, where he is last listed in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. I'm sure that Elisha was from CT, from his records in censuses that say that, as do his wife's, Hannah. This Elisha Cook's wife, Hannah, was born in 1776 (I'm sure it was CT too). She came out to Iowa later with her son Horace and his wife Sophia Bligh Cook. Horace Cook (Elisha Cook's son) and his wife Sophia Bligh Cook, came to eastern Iowa in about 1849 after first living in MO for a very short time. Horace and his wife Sophia Bligh Cook are buried in eastern Iowa near the town of Lost Nation, IA, in Clinton County. Hannah who was Elisha's wife, is buried beside her son Horace Cook in Iowa. I would love to know who some of Elisha and Hannah Cook's other children are, and where Elisha and his wife Hannah came from in CT.
