Again these (probaby!) aren't my Cooks, but when you're talking early settlers in MI from NY & VT in some of those counties I may have some helpful experience. 1) All 3 places have *very* helpful volunteers on the rootsweb "state, county" message boards (and hey, some may be my cousins or yours). Compose posts. Unlike some States those are eager to share family history. 2) Just an idea, possible mindset, but families up in VT for the War of 1812-14 were descendants of Revolutionary War soldiers out of MA & to an extent CT, and a few from NY too. About 1832, after the war, they or 1812 War descendants were awarded land in MI, just as had been done earlier for patriots/Ohio. I can 'see' yours possibly making their way overland to MI via NY, & OH (Western Reserve, Connecticut Land Co keywords) rather than sailing the Great Lakes. Or do I read that they went to MI first, then to OH? I'm still intrigued that along with VT birth you've got an Orange Co NY births as well. Soldiers took their families! These guys could move even families winters via sleigh, mine did. Yours may have migrated from Orange to Tioga Co about 1818 or earlier, then up to Seneca, I've others who did. I was not clear about one thing in previous post, there was a -smallish- Orange Co down near Westchester, which was enlarged 1800 by a big cutout from Ulster Co NY. *1816 was "the year with no summer" and caused a BIG shakeup & diaspora, families moved: sons, daughters, war buddy neighbors leaving home looking for somewhere to grow enough food to feed a family. This geologic-driven human event was not limited to our new nation, it was global; the height of the last "little ice age" glaciation. It didn't really begin "global warming" in noticeable increments until around the US Civil War -- check out people's clothing, home/room size, and communicable disease spread incidence before & after.
