I am looking for info on Maria Cook, born around 1838 possibly in New York or Conneticut, who married Henry? Roome in 1853, had a son Henry Cook Roome born Feb 1854 in Harlem NY, a daughter Eugenie Marie Cook Roome born Yorkville NY 1856. We think her first husband died in 1858-1860 and she definately remarries on Oct 3, 1860 in Cleveland Ohio. No idea why, I have the marriage certificate, and the church records don't exist. SHe lives in NYC during 1861-64, her 2nd husband charles ogden Wood is stationed in Ft Lafayette. In 1864 Wood is appointed commander of Ft. Alcatraz in San Francisco, and Maria gives birth to their son Charles Wood in 1864 on the Island. Her son Henry is educated abroad in Germany, and returns in 1870 as the family finances falter. In a letter I obtained from the U.S. archives, she tells the German headmaster she is writing to her uncle, a banker in New York, to have him send payment in Gold. Don't know if the Uncle is a Cook. I am looking for anything more definate on Maria's origin, parents, etc. I am especially trying to find the name of her 1st husband, and anything about him. He was supposed to be much older than her, maybe born in 1806 and born abroad. Does she belong to anyone's Cook line? I have been looking since 1987.
