Co., Birdsall, Williams & Co., 1881, Kansas City, MO, p. 756: John D. S. Cook Was b. Ulster Co., NY and when an infant removed to Oswego Co., receiving a common school education there and in Ulster Co., where the family returned in 1847. In 1849, his father went to Sullivan Co. and to Wayne Co., PA, in 1850, and during this time, John was attending the Delaware Literary Inst. of Franklin, Delaware Co., NY where he completed preparations for college in 1852. Then taught school in northern PA until the fall of 1855, when he entered Union College, at Schenectady, graduation therefrom in 1859, in the last class taught by the famous Dr. Nott. He studied law in Kingston, NY, and also at the Albany law School, where he graduated in 1861, and then returned to Kingston, remaining in the office of his former preceptor until 10/1861. He was mustered into the US service as 1st Lt. of Co. I, 20th Regiment NYSM and commanded his company at the battles of Norman's Ford, Warrentown Spgs., 2nd Bull Run, and Chantilly, VA, in Aug. & Sept. 1862, and the battle of Fr! edericksburg, 12/15-17/1862. Was promoted to Capt. in 3/1863 and promoted to provost marshall at Aqua Creek, VA in May & June 1863. He also commanded the company at the battle of Gettysburg, PA and after that fight was attached to the HQs of the Army of the Potomac, taking part in its campaign in VA, at Mine River under Gen. Meade, and in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Ann, Cold Harbor, and before Petersburg, under Gen. Grant. Dec. 19/1864 he resigned from the army on account of the death of his father, returned to PA and settled up the estate, and in the fall of 1865 was married to Rose E. Barlow, of Scranton, same state. They he removed to Caldwell Co., MO and engaged in the practice of law, holding the positions of Co. Atty. 2 years and Ast. Assessor of Internal Rev. in 1867-8. In 1870 came to Kansas City, and has since been practicing his profession. Was register in bankruptcy in 6/1874 holding the office until the repeal of the law. He is Rep! ublican in politics and has been a delegate to several State conventions, and was alternate delegate to the Chicago Nat'l Convention in 1880.
