Co., Birdsall, Williams & Co., 1881, Kansas City, MO, p. 756-7: James W. Cook Was born Lexington, KY 3/31/1821, resided there until his majority receiving his education in the schools of that city. In 1856 he removed to Kansas City and soon after engaged in the dry goods business, continuing it until 1868. During this time was also engaged in the real estate business and ran a dairy for 8 years, milking as many as 30 cows at a time. In 1859 he was elected a member of the city council and again in 1868, serving for 2 years. He is the originator of what is known as the Kansas City Greenback Scrip, which was the result of saving to the citizens of thousands of dollars. As a citizen, he stands high in the estimation of the people. Has been twice married. First in 1846 to Miss Eliza A. Pickett, of Lexington. She died 3/15/1880 leaving 6 children: William P., George W., Thomas H., Jennie C., John R., and Henry C. His 2nd marriage occurred in 4/1881 to Miss Fannie A Baird, of Lexington, and a sister-in-law of the celebrated temperance lecturer, Geo. ! W. Baird. End of document. Hope this helps someone.
