    1. Re: [COOK] COOK in North Yorkshire, UK
    2. Hello, I read your posting with interest. We are researching our ancestor, Daniel Cook, who came from England to America. We do not know the name of the wife of this Daniel Cook. Daniel Cook, who came from England, had a son, Abram Cook, born in Maryland, who married Feebe (Phoebe) Mastin of Virginia. Abram and Feebe had a son, Daniel who married Ruth Moultrie. Daniel fought in the Revolutionary War. This Daniel Cook had a son Daniel Cook (1795-1878) who married Martha Warren Norwood, (1799-1840) dau. of Capt. John and Mary Dubose Norwood. Daniel and Martha married in Darlington Dist., SC and came to Alabama (Possum Bend near Camden in Wilcox County) where they built beautiful Cook Hill, a South Carolinian style two-story house, which continues to stand, is owned and occupied by Cook descendants, and is on tour from time to time. Nearby is the Cook Family Cemetery where Daniel and Martha Cook, as well as many other Cook descendants are buried. Of course, since these are my ancestors, I am very interested in any info that you may be able to provide on Cook. I realize that there were several Daniel Cooks who came to America from England. Therefore, I am attempting to learn more about each, in hopes that I may find "our" Daniel. Perhaps he is this Daniel Cook.

    3. With all the activity out here, I am hoping someone will be able to help me. Looking for the parents of James L Cook, born 1853 in North Carolina. I do not know where in NC, this information was on the census. James married a Louisa Wolfe in Hawkins County Tn. in 1870. They were on the 1880 Census in Hawkins County with 3 children. William (1872), Franklin(1878) and Elisabeth (1879) Two other children were born after that, Mack Howard and Mary. Any help would be appreciated. Dolores Cook

The problem is that at least 10 of the lines shown on the Cook DNA page could possibly be the missing link for my one and only Cook. Unfortunately, the paper trail for most of these seems to be off limits. My Cook ancestor was a woman who was apparently married in Orange County, NC about 1780. She and her husband moved to Bedford County, TN in the very early 1800s and died there. Since this is not an all male line, I cannot participate in the Cook DNA testing and don't know of an all male Cook line from the original immigrant to the present. 3. Catherine Cook married Martin Shofner, apparently in Orange County, NC, in 1780. They lived in Orange County, NC until the first decade of the 1800s and then moved to Bedford County, TN where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Their daughter, Eve Shofner, married William Holt in Orange County, NC in the late 1790s and also moved to Bedford County, TN with the Shofners. These four people are my direct ancestors. In addition, a Christina Cook married Frederick Shoffner, Martin Shofner's brother. They remained in Orange County, NC for the remainder of their lives. Further, Martin Shofner served as the bondsman for the 1796 marriage of a John Cook to Hannah Helton in Orange County, NC. Also, the Shofners had numerous other contacts and real estate transactions with John Cook and Henry Cook. The above Cooks were probably related with Catherine Cook and Christina Cook probably being sisters and John and Henry Cook their brothers or other close relatives. About 1817, a John Cook served as a witness to a real estate transaction between Abraham Helton, Sr., and Abraham Helton, Jr., in Bedford County, TN. These Cooks may be of German origin. I have yet to see anything that would suggest they were English or related to the Cooks described in the book on Cooks in Bedford County, TN. It's the nature of this kind of list. Archive searching is possible, of course, but can be time-consuming and problematic, especially because many subject lines are so vague or general. Answering for my "cousin" Bob Cooke, the answer is that the second generation of the Peter Cook(e)/Elinor Norman family mostly moved from Pennsylvania to North and South Carolina and then, later, to Indiana and Ohio. A branch or two stayed in Pennsylvania, including Bob's ancestors. A few individuals went south and then returned to Pennsylvania in their later years. Working only from memory, I know of none who migrated to Rhode Island, but perhaps Bob knows differently. Tom Miller (Thomas Cook Miller)

My gg grandfather, Silas Beeson, was in his last few years in Eastern Indiana Insane Hospital in Wayne County, where he died in 1905. My supposition is that he had developed what we call today dementia, as there is no record otherwise of a history of mental instability. Even today, some Alzheimer's patients are kept in locked wards to prevent them from wandering. In 1905 or 1910 these patients could well have been placed in an asylum if they could not be kept at home. Tom Miller (Thomas Cook Miller)

    3. I don't think my Jessie Cook had a brother Daniel. The info I found in the GA census records is that he is the son of John and Dicy, and that his siblings included: Clovis C. Cook Louisa E. Cook James L. Cook Eliza A. Cook Eveline E. Cook Francis M. Cook Samuel Cook Of course there could have been more that didn't appear in those census records. DID YOUR JESSE COOK HAVE A BROTHER, DANIEL COOK? NOW, I AM NOT CERTAIN WHETHER THE JESSE COOK TO WHOM I AM REFERRING WAS BORN IN GA OR SC. I REALLY THINK SC, BUT MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIND MORE ON THAT. NO, I DO NOT HAVE THE BOOK YOU MENTIONED. IS IT FOR SALE SOMEWHERE. IF NOT, DO YOU KNOW WHETHER IT IS IN MOST LIBRARIES OR ON LIBRARY LOAN. THAT COULD REALLY HELP ME. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY AND PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED ON ANYTHING YOU LEARN. I WILL DO THE SAME AND WILL LOOK FOR MORE ON THE JESSE COOK OF WHOM I HAVE HEARD.
