    3. Bob, you sound very authoritative that "John Cook is Irish" - please did you look for him in Hively's Warrant Books? He's page 134 in the Shrewsbury Index if you would be so kind. I ordered the book today, but in the meantime I'd surely sleep better for the next several nights knowing I'm onto something Irish! 1. Re: [COOK] John Cook, 1767 PA Colonial Surgey
    2. Ken, Your John Cook is Irish, mine are English, arriving in America in 1713. There is no evidence that my family had any Irish influence. George Adam Cook is not connected. To keep from wasting time, I'd say your John is not connected to my Cook family. "Cook" is an extremely common name especially in that area of Pennsylvania at that time. Most were of German roots (Koch) the name is pronounced the same and there were many The names you found in the Pa. land records, "Elisha, Mary, Peter, Roger & Samuel Cook," except for Roger the rest are related. I have Hively's books for Warrington twp. and surrounding townships in York Co. Samuel Cook (1738-1800) was the father of Elisha (1777-aft.1850) Peter Cook (1700-1779) was the father of Samuel. Mary (Underwood) Cook was the widow of Thomas Cook (1704-1752), Peter's younger brother. Roger Cook is an unrelated gentleman who acquired 630 acres from William Langley in 1768, that now straddles the Warrington and Carroll township line. Jesse Cook (1744-1818) a son of Peter and brother of Samuel, is believed to have started a farm on a portion of Roger Cook's 630 acres in about 1768. The earliest land record I've been able to find with Jesse's name on it, is 1810. This two-story farm outside of Dillsburg became know as the "Cook Farm" and has a date of 1785 under the eve. The 1785 date is thought to be when the addition was added to the original house. The farm was handed down through my direct line until it was unexpectedly sold by my grandfather's sister in 1953. At that time, my father was "verbally" next in line. In 1953 the 100 acre farm was bought by a cousin, so I guess you can say it's still in the family... There is some confusion in my mind about my John Cook b. abt. 1715 Antrim, Ireland as a result of a quote taken from the Union Co. 3. Check the 1830 Hamilton county tn census and see if he is there with his wife. Check the 1820 Hamilton county census for the same thing. Check the court records to see if he was sued by the Indians over the land in Chattanooga TN. Check the state lottery records in the state where the lottery was held for the land grants in Chattanooga. I hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: cook-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cook-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tishri7@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2006 10:02 AM To: cook@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COOK] Most Wanted - William Cook I In a message dated 10/17/2006 11:54:30 P.M. I'm still trying to figure out why he was there and who his parents were. 1. Re: [COOK] Birth & Death Records for Issue of Peter Cooke
    2. "Anne, many questions are discussed over and over, so not to worry. It's the nature of this kind of list. Archive searching is possible, of course, but can be time-consuming and problematic, especially because many subject lines are so vague or general. Answering for my "cousin" Bob Cooke, the answer is that the second generation of the Peter Cook(e)/Elinor Norman family mostly moved from Pennsylvania to North and South Carolina and then, later, to Indiana and Ohio. A branch or two stayed in Pennsylvania, including Bob's ancestors. A few individuals went south and then returned to Pennsylvania in their later years. Working only from memory, I know of none who migrated to Rhode Island, but perhaps Bob knows differently. Tom Miller (Thomas Cook Miller)" You're right Tom, this Cook/e family didn't migrate to Rhode Island. Here's a brief summary for the surviving children of Peter & Elinor: John Cooke 1696-1759 bought land in Londongrove twp., Chester Co., Pa. in 1718. His line remained in the Chester Co. area. Peter Cooke 1700-1779 bought land in Londongrove twp. in 1720. In 1744 Peter moved his family to Doe Run, Warrington twp., York Co., Pa. His line remained in York Co. Isaac Cooke 1702- ----- bought land in Marlborough twp., Chester Co., Pa. in 1724. Isaac bought land in Washington twp., York Co., Pa. in 1750. In 1751 a certificate of removal was signed for "Mary and her children" from New Garden MM, Chester Co.to Warrington MM, York Co. Isaac is not mentioned. In 1754 a certificate of removal from Warrington MM was signed for "Mary and her nine children... to some part of Carolina." (poss. Cane Creek MM, South Carolina) Again Isaac is not mentioned. He may have died in Chester Co., prior to 1751? Thomas Cook 1704-1752 Thomas and family is believed to have moved to Warrington, York Co., about 1740. I beleve Thomas died in March 1752 and is buried in an unmarked grave at Warrington FBG. In 1753 "Mary Cook, widow" was granted a warrant for 50 acres in Washington twp., York Co. In 1754 a certificate of removal was signed for "Mary Cook & family" to Cane Creek MM, North Carolina. Elinor Cook 1707- ---- married Thomas Grindall at Old Swedes Chuch, Wilmington, Delaware January 25, 1730/31. Elinor was disowned for having an illegitimate child and marrying out. She disappears after this, nothing else is known. Mary Cook 1709-1784 was the second wife of Thomas Cox they married in 1730. They moved to Warrington about 1737. It's unclear if Thomas was still alive in 1759 when Mary and family removed to New Garden MM, North Carolina. Bob Cooke

    3. Chattanooga tn has a history. The Indians that lived there were very civilized. They went to court against the various settlers for having taken their land and won though it didn't mean much the court decision was not enforced. The settlers got their land in a lottery held in Georgia I think. Maybe that will help alittle. -----Original Message----- From: cook-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cook-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tishri7@aol.com Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 7:24 PM To: cook@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COOK] Most Wanted - William Cook I I have a William Cook too that I have hit a brick wall for a long time now. I also have some information about a family tradition that my line of Cooks came from a royal family of England and escaped to America to avoid persecution for freedom. I guess it may be religious freedom. But here is my brick wall below, and I cannot find anything else on William Cook, exactly where he came from. This is taken from a post that I posted at a Cook message board: I have hit such a brick wall. I'm searching for William Cook, who perhaps was born in TN or SC. One of my records actually states NC, but I only have one record that states this. He was my great-great-grandfather. There are just so many William Cooks out there. I've searched through a large part of TN and no success there. Here is what I have on him. William Cook was born perhaps in TN or SC. His wife's name was Katherine (possibly Catherine?) I don't have a birthday or anything like that, but I do have his children's b-days and such. This family lived in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN for many years. William Cook was murdered by marauders during the Civil War in AR or MO. His body was never found. Here are his three boys: William Jasper Cook, b. 11/24/1835 in Chattanooga, TN. Thomas Jefferson Cook, b. 12/24/1833 in Chattanooga, TN. Samuel Doak Cook (my great-grandfather), b. 5/5/1844 in Chattanooga, TN. Helen Cook Bellah (married a county judge in Marble Falls, TX. Here is part of my family story from records. The three Cook brothers moved to Texas before the Civil War, while William Cook moved to AR or MO to avoid the effects of war. After no success there, he sold the farm and was preparing to move back to TN (sent his wife and daughter on ahead), when he was attacked by marauders, perhaps Jayhawkers, looking for money from the sale of his property. Since he had sent the money along with his wife, he could not satisfy their demands and they took him off and killed him. His sons, having come home to help the family move, attempted to locate him and the marauders with no success. Samuel Doak "Doc" Cook, who later became Rev. Samuel D. Cook in Young County, TX, told the story in latter years of having hunted down the villains and lynched them. His father's body was never recovered.
