There is also a group of German cooks that history books say they came from the Shenandoah Valley but they actually came from in Pennsylvania and came through the Shenandoah Valley. The founded a fort called cooks fort about 1770 on cook's creek close to what is now Greenville, west Virginia. A famous Methodist preacher, Valentine Cook, is descended from one of them and named after the other. Some have said he was English but I don't buy that because they moved to the area where Cook's fort is with other German families and Valentine Cook spoke fluent German. They did not teach German in schools at that time or the college he attended. Valentine Cook later moved to Logan county Kentucky. -----Original Message----- From: cook-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cook-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of epcookjr Sent: Sunday, November 05, 2006 7:51 PM To: cook@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COOK] Fw: Daniel Cook There is an entire website and news group on the germanna colony. I manage that List and will be glad to subscribe you if you wish. There's never any cost for using a List at Rootsweb. I'm sure there are lots of people on the List that can help. In fact, Michael Cook has been mentioned many times in posts to the List. John Blankenbaker, our leading genealogy expert, has been writing "Germanna Notes" on the Mailing List since 1996. I have published these Notes on our website. There are 25 Notes on each page. John just published Note Nr. 1989, so we are on Page 80 right now. Go to the URL below to find the first page of 25 Notes. At the bottom is an index of all the pages. (I just did a search of those Notes and find that there is information on Michael COOK on the following pages: 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 22, 28, 33, 42, 43, 45, 51, 53, 59, and 61. Hi Ron, You may already know this but your Daniel Cook as well as some other Daniels are included in the two vol. set of "Thomas Cooke of Rhode Island" by Jane Fiske. She may still have the books for sale or you could have your library get them for you. Your Daniel is on pg. 311 of the Vol. 1. I don't believe that we are of German descent but we certainly lack a lot knowing the early ancestry of our family. From a diary we know that our first Daniel Cook came from England. Early stories were that there was Irish blood, also. We have wondered if his father could have come from Ireland. Can someone help me here? What books or documents would be good to pursue in an effort to trace "all the Daniels" who made an early entry to this country? I know there were a number of Daniels. It would be an overwhelming job, but I am willing to begin such an effort in hopes of learning more about our "first" Daniel Cook who, according to a diary, came from England. RobbiePurser@aol.com

I am sorry, the times do not fit in with my Cook family. Betty Wine bwine12@netzero.com
The New England Hist. and Genealogical Register, Vol. 126 (1972), contains an article on descendants of Joshua Cook of Eastham, Mass. On page 90 it lists marriage of John Cook & Caty Shaft on June 1, 1796, based on records of German Reform Church, New Rhinebeck, Cobbleskill, Schoharie Co., NY. John Cook is a son of Elijah Cook (No. 11 on page 89), and Caty Shaft is a daughter of John Shaft. I seek all information on this John Cook (There were many John Cooks in upstate New York in this time period) and on Caty Shaft and her family. Note that Shaft could be Schaft or Schaf and Caty could be Catherine or Katie, etc. I would be grateful for information about these people. Thanks for your help. Kenneth
I am looking for info on David Cook b. about 1770- 1774. who married Rebecca Baldwin their children were Mary, Julia, David B. and John H. -- Ann Brown " Cookie"
Thanks, anyhow. I appreciate your reply. Happy hunting! Robbie

Does anyone connect to the family below- this is taken from an article sent to me by a Cousin- I'm not sure what it is taken from, but we are looking for descendants of this family to determine if the son James mentioned may be our James Cook who died in Jefferson Co., MS about 1812. "JOHN COOKE FIRST SETTLER OF WYOMING COUNTY According to the "History of the Cooke Family", John Cooke was born in London, England, in 1752. In 1770 or 1772, he and his financee were taken to Virginia as indentured servants of a planter. After they served their time, they were married. They settled in Giles County, Virginia, and raised a family of four sons and one daughter. They were Thomas, John, Jr., William, and James. The name of the daughter is not known and whatever happened to her is a mystery." If anyone is researching Quakers in Ontario, (my line went from PA to Canada after the Revolution, for example) I received enormous help from this gentleman: "We have just finished the 1799/1806 and part of the 1806/1832 Pelham books. Parts of the Yonge st Books have also been done. They are not uploaded yet to the internet at quaker.ca as they should be proof read first People can email me though and I will see what I can find for them. harolddoan@bellnet.ca i am clerk of the records committee for the Canada Yealy meeting." --------------------------------- Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo!
