    3. Hey Everyone, I recently hit the genealogical brick wall. Is there anyone out there researching the Cook family in Dorchester County, Maryland or surrounding counties from around the 1750s to early 1800s? Or possibly, more recent, is there anyone researching Cooks in Pickaway County, Ohio from around 1810 to 1835? Thanks, Matthew Cook

    3. In *this* case, I wouldn't worry about it (especially if someone has used it & nothing has happened). EXE means executable. Normally a TREE file is a DOS program & shouldn't be touched unless you know what you're doing. But with genealogy, it could also be a family tree program?? Usually anything sent via e-mail attachment with ".EXE" should NOT be downloaded unless you really trust the sender. REALLY Trust! 2. Cook, Earl
    3. From: JerrSingle@aol.com >This sounds like another Hoax that people >like to pass around. Jerry & the list, I agree that it SOUNDS like a hoax. The good Lord knows how many we have suffered thru. BUT - AND THIS IS A BIIIIIIG BUT - I have to reiterate the warning that I've given before. I won't go into a huge amount of detail unless someone asks me to. HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KEEP IN MIND ABOUT VIRUSES. 1. In general, you cannot activate a virus by opening and reading an E-Mail message, unless it is a MS WORD Document that is attached, has microcode, and you launch it. This type of document poses a potential threat, but there is a way around that threat (I've been thru this before at work). Other than the glitch in MS Word, if it were possible to pass a virus by email, the internet would have been destroyed ages ago. 2. You CAN activate a virus by opening an e-mail that has an attachment which is an EXECUTABLE PROGRAM, and launching that program, or detaching it and executing it later. These would have extensions of .BIN, .EXE, .BAT, etc. In other words, executable program extensions. 3. Enjoy your email, don't fear it, but be very, very careful about any executable program which is attached to email or which you download - especially if it is attached to an email and is unsolicited. These should be virus checked very carefully. 4. As Jerry suggested, keep up with the sites that track hoaxes and real viruses. Forewarned is forearmed. RGDS:EARL

On March 17, 1881 he was united in marriage with Miss MATTIE THOMPSON, daughter of John Thompson (deceased 1888). She was born and reared in Cape Girardeau County. After his marriage Mr. Minton resided on the bottom farm for one year after which he removed to his father's farm. 2. This sounds like another Hoax that people like to pass around. Check out Ancestry.com they have a good section on hoaxes and Virus warnings. Usually if someone sends a Virus Warning to a list like this it's a stupid hoax. People should take the time to check with Antivirus Companies or check out the sites that list about hoaxes. I agree that it's a good idea to be careful when you download files. 2. Bruce C. Cook
    3. I am trying to confirm the parents of Abner Atkinson Cook [my gggrandfather], b. 1 Aug 1811, Hancock Co, GA; d. 29 Jun 1861, Harrison Co, TX. The information that I have from previous researchers is that his father was Thomas Abner Cook [b. abt 1792, prob Clarke Co, GA], mother unknown. His grandfather supposedly was Nathan [or Nathaniel] Cook, son of Drury Cook and Matilda Fennel. Nathan was born abt 1765, probably in Brunswick Co, VA. Drury was born abt 1736, Brunswick Co, VA. Drury's brother John had a son, Nathaniel Pearson Cook, b. after 1759, Hancock Co, GA. I have nothing on this Nathaniel except that he was born and died in Hancock Co, GA, presumably: this is not proven by me. It is possible that he is the grandfather of Abner Atkinson Cook Hope someone can help me with some info on this line. Bruce C. Cook AKA "Rusty" bccook@nh.ultranet.com

    1. [COOK-L] ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS
    2. All I Want For Christmas Dear Santa: Don't bring me new dishes; I don't need a new kind of game. Genealogists have peculiar wishes; For Christmas I just want a surname. A new washing machine would be great, But it isn't the desire of my life. I've just found an ancestor's birth date, Now I need the name of his wife. My heart doesn't yearn for a ring that would put a real diamond to shame. What I want is a much cheaper thing: Please give me Martha's last name. To see my heart singing with joy, Don't bring me a red leather suitcase. Bring me a genealogist's toy: A surname, with dates and a place. == Author Unknown

    1. [COOK-L] COOK, Guilford of Georgia
    2. Looking for descendants of Guilford COOK. Guilford was believed to have been born in north Georgia Aug 20, 1825 and died in Georgia on October 7, 1892. Guilford was listed on census records in 1850, 1860 and 1870 near the Waleska area of Cherokee Co., Georgia and adjacent Pickens County. Would very much like to know his burial site. His mother is thought to be Martha Cook...it is known whether she was ever married. Guilford is known to have a half brother named Richard V. Cook, also by Martha. Guilford is known to have been married 3 times. lst marriage to Sarah Land in Cherokee Co. 2nd marriage to unknown. This marriage produced 4 sons, named James William Cook b. 1865- d. 1916, William Jasper Cook born 1868 died 1911, had one son named Roger S. Cook and Henry N. or M. Cook born 1869 - died 1919 and John Cook who appeared to have died at childbirth in 1870. Its possible the mother also died during childbirth. James and William are buried near Chattanooga, TN. Henry's obituary listed his residence as Lookout Mt, TN, that he was survived by a wife and 6 children and that his body was shipped to Warren Station, Georgia for burial in 1919. It is believed Warren Station was in the Walker Co. area of north Georgia. 3rd marriage in 1871 to Elizabeth Frances Bass Lyons Cook. This marriage produced 5 children: Virginia Cook b. and d. 1873 Anderson Franklin Cook b. 1873 d. 1958 - lived in Tennessee Joel M. Cook b. 1875 d. 1960 unknown where he died possibly Tennessee Clarsie Victoria Cook b. 1878 d. 1955 - lived and died in Chattanooga, TN Sarah Octavia Cook b. 1882 d. 1928 - lived in Fairmount, GA and Chattanooga Sarah also known as "Tavie" was my grandmother. Although her father was Guilford, her death certificate lists his name as Alfred Cook. It is believed that in his later years he was more commonly known as Albert rather than Guilford. Guilford was known to have served in the Civil War in Co. E - Cherokee Legion (GA) Infantry known as the Cherokee Volunteers. Would appreciate any info on his burial site and any known info about any of his decendants. Betty Lemmon bettylatl@aol.com
