I am stuck and would like some advice... I found my gg-grandfather Richard L Cook in the 1850 census in Warren County, GA, 158th district. He is 21 and his wife is 19. There is only one other Cook family listed in that census, a woman 52 and a child of 9. The woman's birth state is listed as NC. He is in the 1860 Census for Warren County, with his wife, and several children. No other Cooks are listed. He is NOT in the 1870 Warren County census. I already knew he moved to Thomas County after the Civil War from family stories. No one in my family knows where he was born. My questions: 1) What assumptions can I make about the fact there are only two Cook households in the 1850 census? Since there were large families in that day and time, I would have expected to see many Cooks listed if Richard L was born in Warren County (siblings). Can I assume, if only for a starting point, that the woman is his mother, and since she is from North Carolina, begin searching for her in North Carolina (though that would be difficult since her maiden name is not listed - that is, if Cook is her married and not maiden name)... 2) Where shoud I begin next to look for Richard Cook since I don't know his parents or siblings names? 3) Richard L worked for the railroad in Georgia (he is listed as a RR worker in the 1860 census and stories from family verify that). Are there records of some kind I can use to track him through his job? 4) I know he bought property in Thomas County when he moved there, although I am not sure where the property is nor when it was purchased. How should I go about tracking that down? This is slow going, but not as slow as it could be - at least I have the internet. My uncle (mom's brother) did research on his family and it took him years - he had to visit every place, didn't have the internet, and had to write everything by hand and correlate things manually... Thanks for your help.

I am searching for a COOK/KOCH progenitor in America of our Cook Family . A GEORG or CHARLES COOK or KOCH b ca 1832 came to the Pittsburgh, PA area sometime before 1860 and was working as a carpenter in the villages of Tarentum and Natrona in the Allegheny River Valley, Allegheny Co, PA when his son: Charles Alexander COOK was born 1862 Charles may have brothers George, Christian and Henry. He certainly has a sister CARRIE, Caroline COOK who married a Charles APPLEBY of NY and Tarentum, PA. On some census from 1870 - 1920 Charles and Carrie say their father was born in HESSE and some say he was born in BAYERN. Another William COOK of Tarentum was b HESSE-CASSEL but I do not know if he is connected. Also, the GEORGE COOK on the 1870 census who appears to be the one I am seeking is married to a Barbara KALLENBAUGH b HESSE dau of a Margaret and Deadrick KALLENBAUGH/CALLENBAUGH. Do you have any suggestions to help me find this ggrandfather ? Helen Cook Austin Decatur, AL AustinART@aol.com

Jesse, the # I have for you is <jcook172@wt.net> This is the number on your email is it right? If its O.K. then something must be wrong with my email but, your email continues to bounce. After I rcd. your email today I tried to post 2 messages to you but, they both bounced. Isn't it strange that I can receive your email but, you cannot receive mine? Tell me about your Albert c1853, was that your ancestor? or a sibling of your ancestor? I first pick mine up 1880 Clark Co. ARK. Poppa was born 1881 Clark Co. and they came to TX shortly thereafter and TX does not have an 1890 census. But, family knowledge is he died when poppa was 8 yrs of age, so he wouldn't have been on the census anyway. I will call my server mon. and see if perhaps they are having problems. Write me via the COOK-L anxious to hear from you. Martha

Hi everyone, thanks for all the wonderful stuff list members have been forwarding for addition to the JP area Cook web pages. You'll notice that the bounderies really go a little farther out as we try to connect. If you haven't been by to check the census information, you might want to visit http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookcens.html The census data that I have collected over the years and the data that has been sent to me is sorted in 2 ways - first by the year, all 1830 data can be found at the same site - just change cookcens.html to cook1830 ... same for 1840 and so on. Now if you think that great great g'pa was born in say Graves Co, KY you can look at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookgraves.html again you can change the cookgraves.html to cookballard or cookcalloway .. Graves County probably has the most information. This brings me to a request; if you are searching for ancestors in this area and have census data not yet posted - could you share it with me? I am personally most interested in finding more 1870 census information - I only have Calloway and Graves County, KY so far. Thanks again to everyone who has visited the pages, contributed to pages, or encouraged more pages. I have a great deal more to add and have already added a couple more pages today, surf by often, Pat http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookmain.html
I am still searching for solid leads, not circumstantial evidence, on what became of Joseph COOK and Mary, parents of Richard COOK. Joseph is last known to be living in 1810 in Nova Scotia when Richard was born. Apparently he is not in the picture in August 1825 when his son Richard was baptized at the age of 15. Mary had married a gentleman with the surname of RING befor Richard's baptism in August 1825. After this all pertinent records indicate Joseph crawled under a rock. Any information about the whereabouts of Joseph COOK is greatly appreciated. Thanks. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Richard Cooke Dead People Collector (Family Historian) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I've gone to look for myself.
