    1. [COOK-L] Regarding the virus.
    2. I have just been reading all of the e-mail about this worm virus. Shame on the person who wrote it and shame on the person who sent on purpose to others. I called a computer programer I know and he said it is very possible someone might not know that they have it and have sent it on to others until its to late. Thank you to all have sent warnings out to myself and others:) It would be horrible if we lost all the information we have on our computers. I don't know what I would do except cry and start all over. We can do something. PLEASE BACK UP ALL YOUR INFORMATION ON DISKS. If you can afford it buy an antivirus program. We may not get this one thanks to your warnings but, there are other one's out there. As Cook family members we just need continue to help each other out. Most sincerely, Patricia

    1. [COOK-L] COOK, Aaron; lived CT 1653: History
    2. Hi...I just wanted to share this tidbit on p. 53 A TEMPEST IN A SMALL TOWN...GRANBY, CT 1680-1940 by Mark Williams, 1996. As far as I know, I am not related to any Cooks in CT myself. "In 1653, the [General] Court [of England] made grants to Thomas Ford, Lt. Aaron COOK, and John Bissell. Ford was COOK's father-in-law, and COOK and Bissell were members of the elite "Troop of Horse,' and connected to Ct's more wealthy class and ruling oligarchy. All three seem to have had a West Country origin in common. The Court then ordered Simon Wolcott and Daniel Clarke, also of West Country families to 'dispose of the remainder of Grounds at Massaco to the inhabitants of Wyndsor, as they judged convenient.' Evidentally COOK had already begun working his and his father-in-law's plot on the north end of what is now called Terry's Plain, and he soon moved there to become Simsbury's first permanent residence. "From all accounts, though, all of these men - and those others who received grants in 1660...were more interested in profits than in settling. They were an ambitious lot..... COOK was the first actually to settle but sold his farm in 1661 to Simon Wolcott...." Hope this helps someone. Barbara Blake-Krebs barbkkfi@aol.com

    1. [COOK-L] CHAT: List Problems
    2. Cook, Earl
    3. Ellie and the group, I know you and Lisa have taken steps to get the list under control. You always seem to respond quickly to anger and flames, and I thank you for it. I know you have taken the appropriate steps with the individuals involved. I realize that the discussion about the worm/virus has gone on pretty long, but if I remember correctly (and I AM getting old and forgetful) we all agreed some time back to have CHAT as opposed to JUST GENEALOGY related messages. Am I right? I think we've forgotten the rules we all agreed on (or failed to comment on when they were being considered), especially those concerning how to use subject headers to indicate the content of the message. Maybe I've forgotten the rules or they've changed. Ellie, Lisa, maybe you could post these for us again...maybe post them to us every Monday morning so we won't forget. Thanks for all your hard work. 2. LCleversey
    3. Dear Cookies, I'm really sorry everyone had to put up with the flaming that happened this evening. I had thought I had handled the problem with writing a letter to her this afternoon. But guess I was wrong!! I came home from Baseball pratice with my son and found this mess. I want to thank those of you who wrote me with your concern of this matter <grin> my mail box was over flowing. After dissussing the problem with Ellie we came to the decision of removing her from the list. All of you have to understand that Flaming and expecially foul language are not used on this list or any Rootsweb lists. Ellie has explained in the Welcome letter about flaming so it's unacceptable. Anyone who wants to flame or use foul language WILL be removed from the list and not permitted to resubscribe. Also PLEASE remember if you ever receive flaming messages from a member of this list Please forward it to Ellie or I and we will handle (or at least try)the problem. PLEASE do not post it to the list. Ok enough said lets get back to posting queries and being a happy family, and I'll get back to the taxes. 2. C.Gail Kenney
    3. Hi ya, first off. I haven't posted on here yet (at least I dont think so, could be old age though I might have) Anyways I wanted to say Hi to everybody. The Cook Im researching is my Great Grandfather Joel C. COOK married to a Dora Mae DUNN in Miller county Ark. on Oct 26th of 1893. Pretty much from what I gather (when the blood is talkin that is) most of my COOKs are from the Ark-la-tex area, (Shreveport LA, Bradley Ark, Texarkana, etc..) Its said my Grandfather John Franklin COOK was born in Ida, La (its one of those small towns that only a hair away from the Ark border) b. 1904(5 maybe) d. 1991 in S'port, La. If'n anyone happens ta cross the name though, I'd appreciate ya droppin me a line (an a cup of coffee too) :) As it is the knowledge on Joel C. COOK around here (blood wise) ain't much, (well besides bein the name on my Grandpa's death cert. as bein his pop) Thank Bunches C. Gail Kenney <--- the only coconut in the pecan tree... :)

    1. Re: [COOK-L] A Happy 99 Victim
    2. Ellen
    3. I haven't had time to read all the Happy 99 messages today. If I'm being redundant, I apologize. I want to delete all these messages without reading them, so let me speak from experience. The Happy 99 WORM (it's not a virus) was disseminated primarily through usenet groups earlier this year. I am a computer professional; i.e., I'm a computer PROF. I received an e-mail attachment from an engineer and computer colleague that had Happy 99 attached. This was in January. I opened the attachment because he is a trusted friend and informed user; I received a graphic display of fireworks. I sent him a thank you note. He didn't know he'd sent it. Further investigation yielded the information that this worm had been attached to e-mails to usenet groups ( and he's a subscriber to many) and it's proliferated through lists ever since. In its original form, it's totally benign and you just delete the ska.exe file, liste.ska, and other *.ska or ska.* files your find in a FIND search. I was NOT on any lists at the time I received it, so I didn't spread it. However, when he notified me he'd sent it to me, I discovered the ska.exe file and it had over written my winsock 32.dll with ska.dll. If it does its full-blown thing, it creates a limited liste.ska file where it keeps a record of to whom it's sent itself, but it's limited. That's how I was notified; I turned up in his liste.exe file. I didn't have one. I just deleted everything *.ska and ska.* and was rid of it. I did have to delete my winsock32.dll because it's the corrupted version. The ska.dll is the backup it creates. My system is fine. At some point, a hacker is going to get a hold of the code and can put something more malevolent into it than currently exists. It is now just a nuisance. SO......use FIND and type in ska.* If any files appear in the dialogue box, delete them. Then do a FIND on *.ska If any files appear, delete them. If you've got a liste.ska, you owe it to the people on the list to notify them and give them any of the zillion sites mentioned in these lists for instructions on how to get rid of it. It's not a big deal. The most annoying thing was having to delete my winsock32.dll file and let it be overwritten by ska.dll. But, everything still works just fine. This is not a cause for panic. It's harmless. For now. Just do the FIND, delete it if you've got it, notify any people on the liste.ska file if you've got one, and it's over.
