    1. [COOK-L] COOK ROLL CALL-Cook, Rhea, Smalling, etc.
    2. User
    3. I am looking for information on James Cook who was married to Ann McConnell. Blount County Records has a deed (I haven't seen it yet) dated May 10, 1823 which lists the heirs of James and Ann. We think our great great great grandmother Elizabeth may be the daughter Elizabeth named as one of the 12 children listed in the deed. Would like anything at all relating to this family. <What I have so far on our Elizabeth Cook, b. ca 1796-1797 m. Samuel Benjamin Smalling b. 1799. He was the son of Samuel and (Miss Taylor?) Smalling of Tennessee. The deed also lists another child of James and Ann as being William, who married a Margaret Smalling, who was the daughter of Samuel Smalling. It appears the Cooks and the Smallings were together at some point in time. My Cook Roll Call: Elizabeth Cook of Tennessee (ca1797- ?) m. Samuel Benjamin Smalling Margaret Jane Smalling of Tennessee (1840-1920) m. William M. Rhea Mary Elizabeth Rhea of Tennessee (1865-1938) m. James Alfred Spiva/Spivey Luther Adniram Spivey of Tennessee (1891-1962) m. Ora Lee Ellis Claude Raymond Spivey of Tennessee (1915- ) m. 1. [COOK-L] Sunshine and Shadows by Evangeline Cook
    2. Anita Gauld
    3. Sunshine & Shadows written by Evangeline H. Wright (d. 1960 at 92 yrs 8mo 18 days.) Part II Mother was knitting by candlelight, having a pair of woolen stockings she felt she must finish before she retired. Father having gone to bed, the evening settled down with a heavy snow storm. The snow piling itself high and deep. But she felt that Father would need the stockings for the morrow as he had a contract to cut wood for a neighbor, she felt she must finish them. The wind was howling around their log cabin, sweeping the snow in deep drifts. Her candle light flickered at every passing draft of wind. The wood in the fire place was burning low--still her fingers were flying. The light of her candle flashed on her highly polished needles at every move of her fingers. Her work almost finished, the mantel clock struck one-two. Suddenly a cry startled her. She stopped her work and listened. It came again. The wind whistled around the cabin corner. She says, "A woman, mercy she can never live in this awful storm." Again the cry of distress. It seemed very near. She lay her work down, going to father and called, "Jacob, Jacob, listen, a woman is in distress -- the cry is as near as our cabin door." Father said, "Oh, put thy light out quick--panther sees thy light and is coming to it." Out went the light. The stockings were not needed for a long time. The cry of the panther became weaker as he changed his course and traveled farther and farther until his cry died in the distance. The winter passed. The snow melted and ran down the ravines. Father went to his wood cutting contract. He got his saw, his ax wedge and mall as well as his gun which men at this time never went without, not knowing what they might come in contact with. His faithful dog, Frank went with him. Father takes his coat off, throws it on the ground. Frank lies down on the coat to take care of it and to have a nice nap while his master works. Father took up his ax and began to chop down a tree. When the cat saw Frank he began to whine and make a little noise. Father stopped, saying, "What is it, Frank?" The dog started toward the red bud tree and the cat gave a squall and got ready to make a spring on the dog. Father said, "set him, Frank, while I get my gun." The cat did not seem to notice Father's movements. His green eyes were glued on the dog and was making ready to spring. Every muscle was twitching in his body. Father said, "Ready Frank set him". The dog moved closer to the tree. Bang went the gun and down came the cat. Frank jumped him, shaking and growling. Father went to the dog, saying, "All right, Frank, we got him, didn't we." When Father would tell his wild cat story he always added , "I believe Providence sent my dog with me that morning." Living here more than eight years, we find our bread winner stricken down with typhoid fever for many weeks. He finally rallied in a weakened condition. Fall months coming on--his asthma now began to bother him. Mother, through her anxiety for father's health, thought I better write to the folks about his condition or they wouldn't like it. She wrote and the return letter ran -- "Well, Jacob, I thought thee was doing the wrong thing when thee and thine climbed in thy wagon and started West. So, sell what you have and come back east when the climate is more open." We sold all farm tools, cow, calf, horses and land for fiteen hundred dollars. Sounds cheap, doesn't it today -- when you nearly have to pay that nowadays for a one acre to build on? We left Oskaloosa on the up-to-date passenger car going over the same road only in a different wagon into the city of Chicago, now a large city which could compete with Boston. Only a few years back when the Cooks went through it was called little Chicago. It seemed strange the little town of a dozen houses could bloom out like a mammoth rose, but yet they saw it so. It seemed to them it was like growing up over night. Father seemed much better. Maybe now he was headed for home--maybe he had been suffering with home-sickness. Those trains did not run like lightning like they do now. We only made about forty miles an hour. Our family consisted of Father, mother, Charles, Mary, Willie and Lina, the troublemaker. :) Anita ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anita (nee: Merlo) Gauld Anita_Gauld@Hotmail.Com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have over 20,000 individuals in my database. 1. [COOK-L] Worm info
    2. Here you go Lisa. Hope this helps. Dick I haven't had time to read all the Happy 99 messages today. If I'm being redundant, I apologize. I want to delete all these messages without reading them, so let me speak from experience. The Happy 99 WORM (it's not a virus) was disseminated primarily through usenet groups earlier this year. I am a computer professional; i.e., I'm a computer PROF. I received an e-mail attachment from an engineer and computer colleague that had Happy 99 attached. This was in January. I opened the attachment because he is a trusted friend and informed user; I received a graphic display of fireworks. I sent him a thank you note. He didn't know he'd sent it. Further investigation yielded the information that this worm had been attached to e-mails to usenet groups ( and he's a subscriber to many) and it's proliferated through lists ever since. In its original form, it's totally benign and you just delete the ska.exe file, liste.ska, and other *.ska or ska.* files your find in a FIND search. I was NOT on any lists at the time I received it, so I didn't spread it. However, when he notified me he'd sent it to me, I discovered the ska.exe file and it had over written my winsock 32.dll with ska.dll. If it does its full-blown thing, it creates a limited liste.ska file where it keeps a record of to whom it's sent itself, but it's limited. That's how I was notified; I turned up in his liste.exe file. I didn't have one. I just deleted everything *.ska and ska.* and was rid of it. I did have to delete my winsock32.dll because it's the corrupted version. The ska.dll is the backup it creates. My system is fine. At some point, a hacker is going to get a hold of the code and can put something more malevolent into it than currently exists. It is now just a nuisance. SO......use FIND and type in ska.* If any files appear in the dialogue box, delete them. Then do a FIND on *.ska If any files appear, delete them. If you've got a liste.ska, you owe it to the people on the list to notify them and give them any of the zillion sites mentioned in these lists for instructions on how to get rid of it. It's not a big deal. The most annoying thing was having to delete my winsock32.dll file and let it be overwritten by ska.dll. But, everything still works just fine. This is not a cause for panic. It's harmless. For now. Just do the FIND, delete it if you've got it, notify any people on the liste.ska file if you've got one, and it's over. 3. True, many of the Cooks on this list seem to be southerners, but mine aren't. Please see if you recognize any of these: Jacob Cook, b. 1786, presumably in Mass. or vicinity. Married Abigail (maiden name unknown) (b. 1786, location unknown) prior to 1809 (they had a son born in 1809 in Perry NY who died in 1815). Obituary of their son (Lyman, 1820-1898) said they moved from Massachusetts to Licking Co. Ohio, and must have arrived there by 1815, as their first son is buried in Licking Co. Jacob died in 1872, and Abigail died in 1859, both at Granville, Licking Co., Ohio. The tombstones don't give any more information than the year of death. I have some information on some of the descendants of Jacob and Abigail Cook, which I am quite willing to share. Any help would be appreciated. -- Phil Philip B. 3. Looking for ancestors of Judson COOK and Mary Sebastian COOK of Minnesota, circa late 1800's and early 1900's. Their son, Chester Sebastian COOK (b. 05 June 1899), married Clara Marion TRONSTAD (b. 01 September 1900). Chester and Clara's first child, Phyllis Jean COOK, was born 21 January 1921 in Mankato, Minnesota. At that time, Chester was a physical director at the YMCA in Mankato. I believe they lived in Minneapolis prior to that but am not sure.

    3. I have the memoirs of Evangeline H. Wright. Wouldn't mind inputting them if anyone might be interested. I have input the text exactly as written by Lina Cook. I chose to leave the spelling exactly as written because it also sets the mood and talk of the times. Evangeline died in 1960 at 92 yrs 8 mos 18 days). Chapter One Born in the state of Iowa, May the twenty-fifth. Flowers were blooming, birds calling their mates, "Cheep, Cheep", the blackbirds holding their spring conferences in the trees. The lambs skipping and playing in the meadows. Men plowing in the fields. What a busy time for a Baby Girl to be born on one Sabbath day. The sun shining so bright, the sky so blue. So much commotion too. I grew up like all babies, my hair blond, my eyes blue. I had some bad brothers too. My sister combed and curled my hair every morning. Then my brothers slipped up behind me, got hold of a curl and gave it a jerk. They'd run and say, "I got one of Lina's curls." This made me mad and I would run and crawl under the bed, pout until I went to sleep. They would hunt for me. I, like Billie Blue, was under the bed fast asleep. It didn't help because some of them would get me by my feet and pull me out from under the bed. I became three and a half years old while we were still in Iowa. You see, some years back, my parents went home-seeking. Traveling from the state of Indiana to Iowa in a covered wagon, having heard of a new state opened for home-seekers. Passing through little Chicago at this time (this was called little Chicago, Illinois) finding many friendly people they camped at night, resting themselves and their teams --- the on until they reached Oskaloosa. There they found a settlement of Friend Quakers. As they were of the same sect they were taken care of until they could find a location and work. Father Cook being a carpenter by trade, it did not take long until he was a very busy man as this kind of work was in high demand. Many new settlers were moving in the new state which made much work. Finding a nice little forty acres of land he liked, he proceeded to take the claim. With the team his father had given him, they bought a cow. At odd times he buklt his log house, cleared his land for crops, and was ready to begin living. The people those days did not put on so much stress, but everybody lived and had all things in common. The climate seemed a little cool, land very rolling with hills and ravines. There were brown and gray wolves, bobolinks, wild cats and panthers. The panther seemed to be the most destructive animal, roaming through the country at night seeking his food, killing young calves, pigs, lambs and sheep -- sometimes the milk cows. If smaller animals were not found, his cry when traveling could be heard a long distance ringing through the woods along the streams -- the echo bounding against the hill sides, rebouding, traveling down the ravines in one long shrill cry sending a blood curdling feeling down the spinal column of the new settlers of 1860, causing them to sit up in bed, saing, "Is he coming here? Will he kill our stock?" They watched and waited with hearts in their mouts until his cry would die in the distance before they felt a relif of safety. 3. Hi Everyone I have moved, so wanted to post a new message and see if I can get some help. I am seeking help on my father's ancestors. I never knew him due to a railroad accident that took his life when I was 6 months old. My father was Lennis Preston Cook, b. 6/30/09 in Birmingham, AL. He had a sister Kathleen and a brother Charles J., both born in Birmingham. My Grandfather was Charles Lawrence Cook, b. 10/18/66 in Salem, AL. He married Emma Alberta Malloy. Charles had siblings as follows: Manda, b. abt. 1848, Martha, b. abt. 1852, Ida, b. abt 1858, John, b. abt. 1860 and Mary, b. abt 1869. My Great Grandfather was William Cook, b. in GA and married Mary Bowen on 12/24/1844 in Barbour County, AL. This is where things get a little fuzzy. William's father may have John Cook, b. 2/10/1796, but I am not absolutely sure of this. If anyone recognizes any of these names, please contact me. I think John Cook may have lived in Jasper, GA., but don't know if that is County or City. Thanks so much and good luck to everyone. Harry Cook Birmingham, AL
