1. [COOK-L] Cook in LA or TX
2. Hi, I just rejoined this list. I am looking for Cooks in Sabine Parish, LA or Sabine Co., TX. I am looking for the parents of John Foster Cook born 06 July 1896 in either Sabine Parish, LA or Sabine Co. TX. He was raised by William David and Mary Carter living in Sabine Parish, LA. We understand that he was given to the Carter's when he was only weeks or months old. He lived in Sabine Parish with the Carter's until after 1910 when they moved to Texas he came with them. When he was 20 years old the Carter's adopted him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Selida Carter

1. [COOK-L] Announcements:Sunday Morning Coffee
2. ( ) .-.,--^--. _ Good Morning Cook Cousins \\| `---' |// Come on in the coffee pot's on \| / _\___/_ Good Morning Family, A big welcome to our new members. Before long you will know everyone and feel comfortable. We are a unique group of people. We cry together and we laugh together, as we are truly one big happy family. The best part about us is the way we help each other. If you are new to the Internet, or new to genealogy, please do ask questions. Someone in this group has an answer to help you. We are all eager to see who your Cook's were so when you are ready, do post them. Keep up the good work on the subject lines...were getting there :) We are getting into a good habit and one that you can use on your other lists to attract attention to your surname. Lets go back to our States Project. I have been working on the state I live in which is Oklahoma. I created a page and put it in the attic on our Cook web page. I still have more to enter but I have started it and it's now ready for you all to see. I found out a lot of things about my state I didn't know.:) I am now ready to ask for volunteers from members who live in Oklahoma to help with look ups. This is something that would not tie you down to the computer and would be so helpful to our members searching this state. Please contact me if you will help. The Oklahoma page is an example of what we can do for each of the states in the u.s. All you have to do is search the Internet for the state you live in and look for places where records are kept. Next is to offer to do look ups for anyone searching in your state. I will do all the work of putting the page together with what you send me. I will then place it on our Cook Homepage for members to see. Our Cook list is not a list of do nothing. We don't just send in a query and sit and wait for someone to come along with our family names. We share records and help each other and this project is another way to continue tie families together. Remember that when we help others we help us also. So many of us have had such a hard time finding our line and the more we work together, the closer we come to finding our Cook. So many of you are shut-ins and can't get out so this would be very good for you to help us. Each member will get full credit on the page. This is a rewarding project and I hope you won't let me down. I can't run this project by myself. :) I'm asking all of you to go look at the Oklahoma page and start thinking of what you can do to make a state page. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you... OKLAHOMA This is our web homepage address ... COOK COOKE KOCH HOMEPAGE http://members.aol.com/CookCooke Need to make your day happy? 3. I do not of any of my Cook's being born in NC, but there is a lot to know. I live in a small town and do not have access to books that are listed on this paper as sources of information. They may help you. Swem's (this is hard to read) Virginia Historical Index: William and Mary Quarterly, v. 26, p. 182-183 (1918) Courtesy Grosvenor Library, Buffalo, New York. Hebron Birth Register, This would be from the Colony of 1717 Germanna. "Record Book, Rader's Lutheran Church, Timberville, Rockingham Co. Virginia" #28, pg. 6 This is where Philip is listed as b. 17, Sept. 1781. I assume that all these people were born in Virginia but, that may not be the facts. History of Johnson County, Iowa, 1835-1882. Portrait and Biographical Record of Johnson, Poweshiek, and Iowa Counties. Chapman Brothers, Chicago, 1893 Ohio Genealogical Quarterly, p. 423. Columbiana County Tax Rolls for 1810. I am not familiar with any of these sources of information. What I have was gathered by Frank E. Hosic and Betty Jean (Cook) Larew. This was sent to the author of the "Descendants of William Casselman/Castleman." I do have a copy of a letter Frank E. Hosic sent my grandfather in the 1930's and I do know he was related to my family of Cooks. I know that Frank Hosic and others in my family thought our line was from the 1717 Colony but, I can not tie it together with generation by generation proof. I hope these sources listed can help you. jmashley@sprintmail.com -----Original Message----- From: Lela Howard <howar001@uwp.edu> To: JAMES ASHLEY <jmashley@sprintmail.com> Date: Saturday, March 13, 1999 11:30 AM Subject: Re: [COOK-L] The will of John Cook (Koch) of VA. 1775, son of Michael, mentions nine sons. >James, > This piece of info is very interesting to me. 2. JAMES ASHLEY
3. I just received this information telling about a will. I do not have the will. I believe the list below is the family of John Cook (Koch) that includes the nine sons. I would like to hear from anyone that has knowledge of this family. John Cook wife maybe Elizabeth; Peter 1762 John William 1763 Michael 1765 wife Barbara Custer?? Susanna 1767 Maria Catherine 1769 George 1771 Rudolph 1773 Elizabeth 1775 Thomas 1776 Magadalena 1778 Philip 1781 Adam 1783 Jacob 1787 The above information MAY BE from "Record Book, Raders's Lutheran Church, Timberville, Rockingham Co, Virginia" #28, pg. 6. I say maybe because the paper I have is hard for me to figure out. I am not familiar with this record book. I would be from the Michael and Barbara Cook (Koch) line. Again I would like to hear from anyone with thoughts on the above. jmashley@sprintmail.com

1. [COOK-L] COOK: Aaron COOK>1812 OH>MO
2. Judy Arnold
3. Hello everyone, Trying once again to locate the parents of my great-great grandfather, Aaron Cook. The best info. I had, which was "hearsay," made me believe that they were a George Cook and a Sarah HAMILTON. However, researchers in Butler Co., OH found that Sarah Hamilton had married someone else just a few months before Aaron was born. So that makes them (George and Sarah) unlikely as Aaron's parents. Here is what I know about Aaron: Aaron COOK, b. 03 Oct 1812, Butler Co., OH; d. 22 Oct 1864, MO (Civil War skirmish); m. Lydia ROBERTS, 28 Nov 1828, Buchanan Co., MO. Children of Aaron and Lydia: Hiram Albert COOK, b. 14 Feb. 1844, Buchanan Co., MO; d. 08 Feb 1920, Jefferson Co., KS; m. Lucinda FRANKLIN, 09 Dec. 1867, IA (this is my great-grandfather--have more info. if interested). Sarah Jane COOK, b. 17 Dec 1848 Mary Elizabeth COOK, b. 12 Jun 1852, MO Giles Thomas COOK, b. 05 Oct 1854 George Lewis Craig COOK, b. 28 Dec 1856 Charles Franklin COOK, b. 15 Aug 1859 Aaron Perry COOK, b. 03 Aug 1861 William Arthur COOK, b. 20 Sep 1863; d. 25 Dec 1863 Lydia Rachel COOK, b. 19 Mar 1865 (Lydia Roberts Cook died in giving birth to Lydia Rachel--about 5 months after her husband, Aaron, died. So sad.) Does this sound like your family? I'll be glad to share what I have. Thanks for reading. Judy Judy Marshall Arnold - mailto:judyad@flash.net Judy's Place - http://www.flash.net/~judyad/

1. [COOK-L] Sunshine n Shadows by Evangeline (Cook) Wright
2. Anita Gauld
3. Sunshine & Shadows written by Evangeline H. Wright (d. 1960 at 92 yrs 8mo 18 days.) Continued...... They had a hard time to get me in the coach. I ws afraid of the big, puffing engine which looked like a mammoth beast to me. I must have had a foreboding of more trouble and would not be safe for me to get in the coach. After we got in the coach I clung onto my mother for dear life. We hear the toot-toot at every road crossing. The bell begins to ding-dong, ding-dong. Now they are cutting steam. The train is slowing down. Then we hear the too---- clear the track, the train is coming in, the conductor booms, through calling, "Chicago-Chicago--change cars for other parts." We sat in the far back seat--every one ahead had their grips, leaving the coach. A dirty, ill-dressed woman with turban on her head, came in the coach, letting on like she was looking for someone. Father Cook raised to his feet. She saw Lina, ran up to him grabbing me by my feet, pulling, jerking and saying, "Me have baby, me trade beads for baby." Father, fighting, striking her and saying, "get out, you beast. You can't have our child, get out." She kicked him, swore at him and said, "Me get baby." Mother was holding on also. The conductor slipped up behind her, grabbed her under arms and slammed her down the steps of the coach saying, "I'll teach you how to steal people's children." The gypsy staggered to her feet, shook her fist at the conductor saying, "I'll get the baby yet. The Conductor took me in his arms saying, "Come people, follow me." He carried me in the depot, found a safe place, set us by a window where we could watch ships and men hoisting coal up out of the ground. Then he said to father, "Mr. Cook, let us see your ticket?" Looking at it he said, "Four hour wait and you stay right here, because they steal men here in this town as well as children." Then he called the depot police saying, "Bob, keep a close watch on this child. That Gypsy was trying to get her even before she came out of the coach, so I am telling you watch, and get the gypsy if you can." All right, I'll do your biding if I can. I see you have four hours wait so be careful what you do." The four hours wait began to drag on father's nervous system. He raised to his feet saying, "I am going out on the platform to get some fresh air. I am so tired." Mother said, "Now listen, Jacob, thee do as the police told thee. Remember no farther than the platform. Thee is not very strong yet." Did Adam listen to Eve? Yes, but from that time on the wives plead, cry, pray, but no, they will not listen. We see the Gypsy's husband had been informed of her work in the passenger car and he was watching to get father away in order to get the baby girl. Father Cook stepped out on the platform. A man standing at the farther end saw his prey. Father stood looking around, then started walking back and forth for exercise when Mr. man greets him. "Good day, sir. Live in Town?" Jacob answered, "Oh now, we just came in on the noon train." (The man, "Oh I have got him) -- "Come far?" Father: "Oh from Iowa." "Staying in Chicago?" "No, we're moving to Indiana. "We're you ever in Chicago before?" "Yes, we passed through some eight years ago in a covered wagon, just a small town then--not more than a hundred houses. It was then called little Chicago." The man said, "What is your trade? "I am a carpenter, sir." "Your name?" "My name is Cook, said father. "I have been looking at those large buildings." "Oh, you should see the interior of this one just a step or two from here. He started and father followed and is gone for some time. Mother remarks to her oldest boy, Charley, "Father has been outside more than a hour. I wonder why he doesn't return? She was not aware there was a woman watching every move she made. Now Mother begins inquiring about her husband--has anyone seen a tall man standing on the platform or sitting out there. None had seen a man of her description. The woman, waiting for Mother's highest emotions and excitement so she could pounce on her prize she coveted so much. It came. Mother began rushing here and there, looking at all men that came in. Realizing father had all of the money they possessed she became frantic. The Gypsy seeing her chance to get the child goes to mother saying, "Me take baby. Mother go hunt Father." Through her hysteria she let her baby girl slip from her arm of safety into the arms of the gypsy's arms. She saw the woman that took her child start running. Like a flash it came to her, what she had done. She began to cry. "The gypsy, gypsy has stolen my baby." She was overcome with grief and swooned away. The depot police had also been watching the woman. As soon as he heard the cry, "The gypsy, the gypsy" a posse of men started after her, running. She was a small woman. The child proved to be too heavy for her. She saw the police were bearing down on her and would get her if she did not set the baby down. She put her down on the street and ran behind houses getting away from the police. He returned with the child in his arms to find men and women doing all they could to restore Mother. At the same time another policeman had rescued Father and returned him just in time for their train. The second policeman had rescued Father from the Gypsy's husband. He was trying to force Father in a saloon. The policeman seeing the tussle interfered and rescued Father, taking him back to his family, just as his waning wife came to. On seeing him she exclaimed, "Oh, Jacob, where has thee been? Jacob answered, "I can't tell." Mother noticed the police had her baby in his arms. She, through her joy, sprang up embracing child and policeman, exclaiming, "Oh, how will I ever be able to pay thee for rescuing my baby? Thou has taken better care of us than my husband." The policeman answered, "Now, Mrs. Cook, this is our place to put people aright that come in the city and get roughed. This is our duty and we are glad to be of service to all that need our help. I shall keep this little girl right here in my arms until I get her safe in your arms after you get on your train." Then I'll know she is safe and you better watch me for I think she belongs to me, Mother Cook." Oh, no, no, we could never give her up." The policeman helped them on the train and bade them goodby and a happy journey home. Then he descended the steps from the car, his back outward. He moved away a few steps, then stopped saying, "I believe that sly cat slipped up past me. I"ll see." He returned to find her at the Cooks again pulling, making quite a commotion in the coach with an intent of having the child if possible. The policeman slipped up behind her, grabbed her hands and placed hand cuffs on her wrists. She turned kicking and fighting. The policeman hooked his cane hook around her neck, starting down the aisle of the coach, saying, "Come on people, I'm taking this cow to the stock pen and close the doors behind her. I will say she had done her last kidnapping she will ever do. 1. [COOK-L] Sunshine n Shadows by Evangeline Cook
2. Anita Gauld
3. Sunshine & Shadows written by Evangeline Hoover (Cook) Wright (d. 1960 at 92 yrs 8mo 18 days.) Chapter Two They had a hard time to get me in the coach. Good-bye and God's blessings on you." :) Anita ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anita (nee: Merlo) Gauld Anita_Gauld@Hotmail.Com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have over 20,000 individuals in my database. 1. [COOK-L] Margaret [Peggy] COOK[E]; b: 1800/1810 Tennessee
2. David Moore
3. Looking for the Parents & Siblings of my gg-grandmother, Margaret[te] [Peggy] COOK[E]: b. abt 1808 in Tennessee; d. abt Jul 1855 in Tennessee; m. 4 Apr 1823 Maury Co., TN to Denson MOORE: b. 1801 North Carolina; d. Tennessee [probably], sorry I don't have ANY other info on this COOK[E] Family. Margaret[te] & Denson MOORE moved to Lewis Co., TN where they were in the 1850 Census. They had 9 children from 1829 to October 1849, after Margaret died abt Jul 1855, Denson may have 'LOST HIS MIND' from grief of her death. Denson started getting drunk often and while he was in one of these 'MOODS', he shot & killed one of his sons, Aaron [Robert] MOORE [? by accident ?] & was convicted of Second Degree Murder on 19 Oct 1855 & sentenced to 'The Pen' [in Nashville, TN] on 20 May 1856 for a term of 10 years at hard labor. It's doubtful that Denson could have lived out his 10 year prison term at hard labor & may have died before getting out, he may be buried in the Prison's Cemetery. I wonder if there's OnLine Listings of people buried in different Prisons. I realize I'm grasping at Straws here, but I need some direction to go to find Margaret[te]'s family. SORRY I got off-track but I'm at a standstill, I'm hoping with this OTHER info, someone from Margaret[te]'s family will have some infor about her Parents OR Siblings. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. David Moore davida@brightok.net

1. [COOK-L] Cook, Nathan, Clarke Co, GA; will
2. Bruce C. Cook
3. According to information that I have from older researchers, Nathan Cook was b. circa 1765, and d. circa 1840, Clarke Co, GA. The same information says that he left a will that named his children. I believe Nathan is my fourth ggrandfather. I am certain of my line back to an Abner Atkinson Cook [my 2nd ggrandfather. Among the people I know who have worked this line, there has been a question about who Abner's father was. Was it Nathan? Or is there another generation in between Nathan and Abner, as some maintain - a Thomas Abner Cook. If anyone has, or could get for me from the Clarke Co courthouse, a copy of Nathan's will, I would be happy to reimburse any costs. I would also be eternally grateful <VBG>! For any Cook's on the GA list, pardon the duplicate posting. Bruce C. Cook AKA "Rusty" bccook@nh.ultranet.com

1. [COOK-L] Announcements: COURTESY RULES UPDATE
2. Hi Family, I'm posting this again to help us learn to fill out the subject line on our posts. We are really getting good!! :) Ellie This is our simple and easy rules or styles of posts that will assist us all in getting what we want out of the COOK list: I can't stress enough the importance of the team work it's going to take to make this system work. Rule or Post #1: COOK: Give Short Description.....Definition: COOK genealogy ONLY. Queries and Charts. For the source documentation, post it if you have it, or you may say that they can contact you. Rule or Post #2: HISTORY: Give Short Description.....Definition: Background history of the COOK surname or COOK general history. For the source documentation, post it if you have it, or you may say that they can contact you. Rule or Post #3:CHAT: Give Short Description.....Acknowledgments, greetings, well-wishes, holiday greetings, chit chat for members of the list. This includes responding to a post for example like the happy99 virus. Rule or Post #4: ANNOUNCEMENTS: Give Short Description.... Home Pages, Web Sites, and any records you want to post. A typical Subject Line might look like: [COOK-L] :COOK: My William COOK bo.1812 Oh [COOK-L] HISTORY: Francis COOK crossing on the Mayflower [COOK-L] CHAT: Merry Christmas [COOK-L] ANNOUNCEMENTS: Cyndi Howell site. With these four simple rules or posts each of you can now select which ones that you wish to read and which ones you wish to delete. As always, if you have any complaints you can send them to me at: Stephens61@aol.com or Lisa at: LClevers@bellsouth.net This system is only as good as those who participate in it so please do the courtesy of keeping your posts designed. Our subject lines are looking much better! It's really for our benefit that we learn to fill them out so members can tell exactly what's inside. We have members who will not read a query if it doesn't give information. So I wonder how many of you aren't getting your query read? Maybe you haven't sent one in a long time because you didn't get any replies. I hope you can think up a good subject line and resend it. The main thing is that we want to catch someone's eye! With the bingo's we have had on this list, I know someone is doing something right. Let's practice :) I was so proud of the way we conducted ourselves last week! We did need to know about the happy99 e-mail. I hope next time we can get the subject line in it's right place. If we do this...no one can complain about the extra posts that are being sent in. Why? because no one HAS to read Chat. Read below the description of Chat and you will get a better idea of what I am trying to accomplish for our list. Chat is just what it is...chat nothing more. If we learn to stay within our guidelines, we are safe. No one has the right to say anything back to you because you filled the subject line out with CHAT first. Let's really start using the Courtesy Rules so we are always in the right.
