Hello cook cousins i was playing around in Encarta today and found this cook can anyone one claim him to there line just wondered EVelny Cook, James (1728-79), British explorer and navigator, famous for his three great voyages of exploration in the South Pacific Ocean and the North American coastal waters. Cook, popularly called Captain Cook, was born in Marton, England, the son of a farm laborer. After spending his early years as an apprentice with a firm of shipowners, he enlisted in the British navy in 1755. Within four years he had become a master, and he spent the years 1756 to 1767 charting the North Atlantic coastal waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and the Saint Lawrence River below Québec. In 1768, as lieutenant in command of the Endeavour, he undertook his first great voyage to the South Pacific, on which he safely carried a group of British astronomers to the recently discovered island of Tahiti to observe the transit of the planet Venus across the sun in June 1769. He then proceeded to New Zealand, taking formal possession of parts of both main islands and accurately charting 3860 km (2400 mi) of coastline for the first time. In 1770 he discovered the eastern coast of Australia, which he charted and claimed for Great Britain under the name of New South Wales. On his return to England in 1771 Cook was promoted to the rank of commander. In 1772, in command of the Resolution, and accompanied by another ship, the Adventure, he set out on his second great expedition, a search for the fabled southern continent, Terra Australis, of which Africa was thought to be a part. He entered the South Pacific, where he sailed along the edge of the Antarctic ice block; on January 16, 1773, he made the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. In 1773 he discovered the islands that were named after him. In 1774 he charted the New Hebrides, the Marquesas, and Easter Island, and discovered several Pacific Islands, including New Caledonia and Niue. After his return to England in July 1775, Cook was made a fellow in the Royal Society and was awarded the Copley medal for scientific achievement. His great 3-year expedition had proved that no southern continent existed, only the great ice mass of the Antarctic region; the voyage was also notable for the remarkable health record maintained by the crew. Cook's insistence on proper hygiene and diet greatly reduced the number of scurvy cases during the expedition. In July 1776, Cook sailed again to determine whether a Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans existed north of the North American continent. During the first part of the expedition he again visited the mid-Pacific, discovering and charting in the early part of 1778 some of the Sandwich Islands, which were later renamed the Hawaiian Islands. Reaching the coast of the North American continent, off the coast of present-day Oregon, he searched in vain for a Northwest Passage, charting the western coastline as far north as the Bering Strait, where ice turned him back. He then returned to the Sandwich Islands, where he was killed during a skirmish with islanders over the theft of a boat. "Cook, James," Microsoft (R) Encarta. Hi I am new to the list. I am researching the descendants of George Cook and Rebecca Buchanan crofters in Ireland (Surelysomewhere) at the end of C18. A few generations later ( I could talk heaps about this), Andy Cook was in the Anzac. He seems to have survived WW1 as I did not find him on the microfilm of dead soldiers of the Anzac at Kew PRO. I do not know how to "read" a uniform to trace him from the photo. I can tell a lot about the Cook family. Andy would be our 3rd cousin. He was from Brisbane. There was a shipping connection. ( ) .-.,--^--. _ Good Morning Cook Cousins \\| `---' |// Come on in the coffee pot's on \| / _\___/_ Good Morning Family, A big welcome to our new members. Before long you will know everyone and feel comfortable. We are a unique group of people. We cry together and we laugh together, as we are truly one big happy family. The best part about us is the way we help each other. If you are new to the Internet, or new to genealogy, please do ask questions. Someone in this group has an answer to help you. We are all eager to see who your Cook's were so when you are ready, do post them. Please put your names and STATE in the subject line. You want everyone to know what's inside. :) More good news today! Two more states are being added to the list. California is now up and running and Texas is in the making. I can't say thank you enough to these people who are working to help bring the states project together. We now have California, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. If you live in one of these states, will you volunteer to do lookups? There are many ways you can help. You might have books you can use or you might go to the different libraries and court houses. Anything you can do will be very much appreciated. If we all pull together we can all benefit from the project. Most of us are just inches away from finding our Cook's that we have searched for years for. This is an excellent way to bridge that gap so we can finally find them. Can I hear from you today that you will help? The project will work I guarantee it but it takes us all pulling together to do it. :) If you haven't been to our Cook Cooke Koch web page, do take a look. I have accumulated several early land deeds, some dating back prior to 1720 for Albemarble and Bertie County North Carolina. Can someone tell me what the age and sex requirements for land ownership for the Province of North Carolina were back than and also under what circumstances women were allowed to own land. I have some deeds where the ownership is held jointly by husband and wife, however when the porperty was sold, the wife needed to assign "power of attorney" before she could sign away her rights to the property. there were other cases where a woman was sole owner, could she have purchased the property outright or must she have inherited it? As of now I seem to have COOKS in two distinct sections of Bertie County, NC during the mid 1700's. One family occupied the extreme southeastern portion of the county referred to as Black Walnut Swamp. A second COOK family occupied the northwestern portion bordering Hertford County, known as the Beaver Pocosin or Beaver Dam Swamp are. With your help I hope to complete my analysis and post my findings and theories on this site. Hopefully, those of us who are related to the COOKS of Bertie County, NC will be able to share our information and build a more complete picture. Ron
I will have a couple of days off next weekend and hope to catch up on the Cook web pages - we have been busy these past couple of months and this would be a good opportunity to visit and see what we are missing - We would like to continue to add information and would love to expand our census information for other KY and TN counties. So, if you have information that you would like to see on this site - get it to me this week and I'll work to get it all posted over my 3 day weekend (in between egg hunts and family gatherings) Pat http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cookmain.html

June 19, 1914, Shelby Co., KY Biographical Sketch from: "Kentucky: A History of the State," by Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 6th ed., 1887, Shelby Co. ABRAHAM C. COOK was born in Shelby County, November 1, 1809, the fifth of a family of six sons and three daughters born to William and Catharine (Crutcher) Cook. His father was a native of Virginia, born about 1756, and died on March 16, 1816. His mother was a native of Virginia, born about 1756 and died about 1846, a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Our subject's paternal grandfather was a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky in 1790 and settled on a farm near Lexington, where he died in 1800. His maternal grandfather was a native of Virginia, came to Kentucky at an early day and settled near Frankfort. Abraham C. Cook has followed agricultural pursuits, and has a well cultivated farm of 140 acres. On January 26, 1832, he married Sarah Cook, of Shelby County. The names of their children are as follows: Edmund, who died March 4, 1863; Israel C., died August 10, 1835; Henry Squire, Warren C., James C., Isaac M. and Emerine. Mr. Cook has been a life-long Republican and is an honored and upright citizen. Disagreement with Author: His father, William Cook III was born abt. 1764 His mother, Keturah Catherine Crutcher was born Oct. 13, 1773 His paternal grandfather, William Cook II settled on a farm near Frankfort, KY about 1784 and died about 1784. His maternal grandfather, Henry Crutcher II, bought a farm in 1796 near Lexington, KY and died Jan. 31, 1807, Franklin Co., KY. Abraham C. Cook married Jan. 28, 1832. Another researcher has Jan. 24, 1832. Henry Squire Cook, son, should be Henry, Squire -- two sons. Apparently, there was a mixup on paternal and maternal grandfather information. It should be switched. Chas. L. Cook, great-grandson Cookstuff@aol.com

I am new to this list and searching for the parents of Phoebe COOK, who married William HICKS (b. 1796 in Ross Co., OH). There was an Isaac COOK in Ross County with a daughter Phoebe. All I know about him is that he came to Ohio from Kentucky, and he was of Scottish extraction. I have no proof that his Phoebe is my ancestor. Do you know anything about this family or any other Cooks in the vicinity of Ross County (that could include Fayette and Madison counties)? Do you know of any Cooks associated with HICKSes in Ross County? Any clues you can toss my way will be much appreciated! Nan Runde mercat@eznet.net also researching BOSTWICK and BUCKLEY in Ohio
