Matthew, This is a long shot, but I have been looking in vain for the family of my ancestor Phoebe/Phebe Cook who married William HICKS (b. 1796) -- whose parents emigrated to Ross Co., OH, from Dorchester Co., MD. Could these families have been associated with one another? I notice your list of John Cook's children didn't include a Phoebe, but might he have had siblings who also came north? As I said, a long shot -- but you never know! Nan Runde mercat@eznet.net >Hi All, > >I keep hoping for that elusive match, but so far no luck. Who are the Cooks in NC that you are researching? Roberta
Dear listmember, I have Cooks from NC to Ky. One known Silas Cook went from Ky. to MS. It is thought they all originated through Va. I'm sorry that you may have to unsub. Did you have a time limit for a response? What problem is it that is on this list that you have not encountered on other lists? I'm sure all us other listmembers would like to know what we are doing wrong. Someone could sign on today or tomorrow that could have the answer to your quest. I would hate to see you miss out on your answers. Genealogy is not too much of a hurry up endeavor. I've been at it for 21 years now. May not ever get all the answers! Please reconsider and give it a little while longer. Restate your names, dates, and places, again for everyone to consider. I hope you are not offended by my post to you. Hi Cookies! I just "found" another COOK in my family. Her name is Kate Cook (abt 1888-1975) m. Chester Dair Long (1880-1937) abt 1905 in AR (?). She died in Dumas, AR; he was born in Granada, MS and died in Hot Springs, AR. Any cousin connections out there? Jo-Ann Stephens Bahai@netusa1.net
I need to clarify myself. Sorry that those on the list thought that I was the one who was at the Mormon Library in Salt Lake. I felt I should remove personal information about Marilyn who is the one describing her ordeal today to protect her privacy. My cousin was very upset when she sent me Marilyn's letter describing her very difficult day. She is a cousin of my cousin, different side of the family. I know we all are going to be thinking about those in Salt Lake and those fleeing Kosovo. This is a difficult time for us all. Carla However my best friend told me yesterday that she was going there so I too had a difficult day as I could not find out where my friend was. We always spend most of the day when we are there on the first floor. At the last minute her husband took off work and they spent the day together. She knew nothing about it until later when her son finally found out where they were. She usually takes her students there on Monday's & Thursday's to teach them how to research at the library. I would never hesitate to research there and plan on going there in July. Carla

Hello all, I just wanted to write & let you know I was at the Family History Library today when the shootings occurred. I was just preparing to go downstairs when I had a thought to stop and ask a lady on the 2nd floor info desk some info abt a microfilm. That thought probably saved my life. Within 30 seconds of being at the desk waiting for her to grab a book, we heard 2 shots then looked at each other. It was deathly quiet as if everyone was trying to figure out what the noise was. Then after abt 3 seconds later we heard 3 more shots and then a woman scream. We deduced it was actually a gun we heard and we all ran for the back stair exits. I was so scared the gunman would come upstairs. It was such a sad day to hear of the many victims shot for no reason. One who died was a security guard, Don Thomas, at the front desk who was a friend of Bruce's whom he used to work in the security dept. with. He leaves 4 children and an invalid wife. Bruce had just been at that same security desk 30 minutes prior to the shootings waiting for me to arrive at the library and chat with me before I spent time researching and then break to meet him for lunch. We missed each other however. Please know that the world is a scary place but that we must all do what we feel we must and that I personally have NOT resigned myself to discontinue my visits to the library. This could have happened to anyone anywhere. Please pray for the families of the vicitims. It was so disheartening to know that this situation happened in a place that is known for it's peaceful feeling & research productiveness. I am well. Just shaken up a bit at the traumatic experience. Continue on in the family history work my friends. Marilyn
Hi - I only have 3 counties on my census pages for the Jackson Purchase Area of KY for 1870 on my web pages - Calloway, Graves, Marshall - would anyone else have any of the other counties that they could provide information on? http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4375/cook1870.html http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estaes/4375/cookcens.html (Main Census Page for the Cook Families). Thanks a bunch, pat
Hi All, I keep hoping for that elusive match, but so far no luck. I'm looking for any Cook families that came from Dorchester County, Maryland, Pickaway County, Ohio or eventually Knox County, Illinois. My branch of this Cook family eventually ended up in Clay County, Nebraska. So, any Cooks from any of these regions, please drop me a line. Below I've included what I've been able to uncover so far. John Cook originally came from Dorchester County, Maryland where he was born Oct 5, 1774 (according to his headstone). His father may have been a John Cook also. He moved to Pickaway County, OH with his family around 1810. He was recorded on the 1820 US Census as living in Deer Creek Township in Pickaway County. There are numerous other Cooks that lived in the Deer Creek Township area, but I have no proof that any of them were related. Then, according to Land Purchase Records from the State of Illinois and the U.S. Census, I am able to gather he moved to KNOX COUNTY ILLINOIS, purchasing land in Orange Township in 1835. According to cemetery records, he died November 16, 1845 and is buried in COOK Cemetery in Knox County, Illinois. His wife, Sarah "Sally" Bailey/Barclay is also buried there. She was born in Maryland on Jan 2, 1777 and died in Knox County on May 4, 1847. (It is wonderful what information they used to include on some headstones. Unfortunately, John's wife's maiden name was obscured so I'm still unsure whether it was Bailey or Barclay. There is a more than likely connection with a John Cook listed in the Daughters of the American Revolution having married Sally Bailey, daughter of George Bailey from Maryland who fought in the Revolution.) According to his probate records, John and Sarah had at least five children: Elizabeth (married a Donaca), Mark (married Sophia Godfrey), John (married Hester "Hettie" Holloway), Sarah (married Enoch Godfrey), and Charlotte (married B. Fleharty possibly of Rio Township). Matthew Cook mpcook@texas.net

Hummm Geocities is improving things for those of you that use AOL (I also have an active account with AOL). The biggest problem with Geocities is the problem with popup ad's, if you get one of these ad's just simply close that screen. The CL's with geocities are tring to get memebrs to install banners so the popups don't come up but you know how that goes. But anyhow there is a wonderful place you really should try on Geocities and that's Heartland Genealogy Society, this is a Genealogy society only for Geocities sites there's almost 3,000 sites listed there. Hgs also has a surname registry for the members, that your free to check out. I promise you you won't have problems viewing the HGS site and if you do Please let me know so we can fix it. Sorry to disapoint, but mine have all been found living in PA and IL so far. I have been on the list for a year and have not connected with anyone else from my Cook family, but Oh Well! Keep hoping. Besides, I think my mother (God rest her soul) would kill me if I didn't keep trying! I will have to unsub for a while when I'm on vacation next month, but I'll be back! So remember if any of you find any connections to Cooks from Bedford Co, PA or Champaign Co, IL, send the info when I return! Linda Garrett
