Finally completed is a new book for Sabine Parish, Louisiana. This includes the complete 1850 census for the Parish with added family information. Under each listing is the name of the spouse (maiden), birth, death and marriage dates and locations along with place of burial of each member of the family. (All based on availability) There are notations as to where families migrated to if they did not stay in the Parish of if they stay, how long a period of time they stayed in the Parish. There is a history of the US Census, helpful hints listings for using census records, Census records specific to the state of Louisiana and a dempographic breakdown of the 1850 census in Sabine Parish. There is a listing of "Early Firsts" for Sabine Parish, and a listing of early settlers of the Parish and what they are noted for. There are maps showing boundry changes that affected the Parish and surrounding areas and there is a listing of Federal Lands sold to early settlers of Sabine and some in Natchitoches and surrounding areas with complete legal land descriptions. There are also maps of the Land Office's in Louisiana and the territory that they controlled. There is a listing of the cemeteries in Sabine Parish and the book is indexed. It is soft covered with a spiral binding for easy use. Spouses of children are also listed etc for each family. I have made every attempt to provide some information on every family in the census even if only to say that they are no longer present in the Parish although this is not usually the case. If interested please contact me. This is a great source for anyone with family in the area or those surrounding areas such as Natchitoches, DeSoto or Vernon Parish. Many families traveled and lived in Sabine County, Texas and other areas of Texas. 35.00 includes postage. Kathy Casagranda P.O. Box 2195 Palmer, Alaska 99645

H. Spencer, Vol. 1, p. 432 Indian Massacre at Cook Station, in InnisBottom, on the Elkhorn Creek, Woodford Co., KY (Franklin Co., KY) About Christmas, in the year 1791, two of her (Margaret Jones Cook) sons, Hosea and Jesse, having married, and one of her daughters having married Lewis Mastin, the three young families, together with three or four others, settled three or four miles lower down on Elkhorn, in what was called InnisBottom. Here they remained undisturbed more than a year. "But on the 28th of April, 1792, the settlement was attacked at three different points, almost simultaneously, by about one hundred Indians. The two Cooks were shearing sheep. At the first fire of the Indians, one of them fell dead, and the other was mortally wounded. The wounded man ran to the cabin, got his and his brothers wife, and their two infants, and a black child into the house, barred the door, and fell dead. The two Mrs. Cooks were now left to defend themselves and their babes against the bloodthirsty savages. They had a rifle in the house, but could find no bullets. One of them, finding a musket ball, bit it in two with her teeth, rammed one piece down the rifle, and, putting the gun through a small aperture in the wall, fired it at an Indian who sitting on a log near the cabin. At the crack of the rifle he sprang high in the air and fell dead. "The Indians tried to break the door open. Failing in this, they fired several balls against it. But it was made of thick puncheons, and the balls would not penetrate it. As a last resort, they sprang on top of the cabin and kindled a fire; but one of the heroic women climbed up in the loft, and threw water on the fire till she put it out. Again the Indians fired the roof, and, this time, there was no water in the house. But when did a mothers courage or resources fail when the life of her babe was at stake? Still remaining in the loft, though an Indian had shot down through the roof at her, she had called for the eggs which had been collected in the house. These she broke and threw on the fire till it was extinguished. "Once more the baffled and infuriated savages kindled a fire on the cabin roof. This time there was neither water nor eggs. But another expedient was soon found. The jacket, thoroughly saturated with blood, was taken from the body of the murdered man, and thrown over the newly kindled fire. At this moment, a ball from the Indians rifle passed through a hank of yarn near the womans head. but did her no harm. The savages at last retired, and left the young mother to weep over the bloody corpses of their husbands. Lewis Mastin was killed about the same time. The Indians were pursued, but they all escaped across the Ohio river, except the one killed by Mrs. Cook and one other. Other References: Books History of Kentucky by Lewis Collins Forks of Elkhorn Church by Ermina Jett Darnell Old Kentucky by Dr. J. I am looking for the latest information on a disputed marriage within the Francis COOKE line. Prior to 1960, it was believed that William SWIFT (3) married Elizabeth TOMSON (granddaughter of Francis COOKE). In The American Genealogist 36 (3):163-170, July 1960 Mrs. John E. BARCLAY, F.A.S.G., Whitman, Massachusetts wrote that Elizabeth TOMSON married a Thomas SWIFT of the Dorchester SWIFT family. Jim Wheeler
The events in the news today with the people being driven from their homes in Kosovo are an exact parallel with what happened to the German people of the Rhine Valley in the late 1600's when the French burned and destroyed their homes and crops repeatedly. This is why many of us Cooks (Kochs) are living in America today. Jesse W. Cook -- Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, Today is a Gift; That's why we call it The Present.
Hi everyone! My name is Beth and I just joined this list. My COOKs lived mostly in Mecklenburg county, Va., but I believe they came from Brunswick County, VA. in the late 1700's. The first one that I know for sure is John COOK who md. Betty Ballard(dau. of John & Faith Ballard). They had 6 children, their son Herbert COOK(1783-1812) is my ancestor. He was md. twice in Meck. Co.,VA., his second wife, Sarah "Sally" Walker and he are my 4Xgreat-grandparents. They md. Nov. 1805. I am descended frrom 2 of their 4 children. Both their son, Samuel Henry COOK(1811-1859) & their daughter, Marina COOK(1806-?) are my 3Xgreat-grandparents. Samuel COOK md. 1836,Meck. Co. to Ann J. Ezell, they had 8 children, including a daughter, Antonia S. COOK(1843-1921). Antonia md. March 20, 1865 to Marina's son by Samuel Harwell, his name Richard D. Harwell(1838-1884). Antonia & Richard had 6 children, their daughter, Katie Belle Harwell(1874-1953) was my great-grandmother. Katie md. April 21, 1897 to James Edwin Vaughan in Manchester, VA., their son, J> B. Clark Vaughan(1904-1961) was my grandfather. If anyone knows any of these people, especially the Cooks, let me know! Beth MBond94365@aol.com
Looking for the parents of Nathan Cook, b. circa 1765 in Virginia, d. cir 1840 in Hancock [probably] Co, GA. Believe his father is either Drury Cook, or John Cook, two of the sons of Henry Cook, b. circa 1690 Surry Co, VA, d. 1774 Brunswick Co, VA. Former family researchers have shown him as a son of Drury Cook/Matilda Fennel. However, so far, no proof of this parentage has been found. Drury's brother John had a son, Nathaniel Pearson Cook. Think it is possible that this is the Nathan I'm looking for. Any help greatly appreciated! Bruce C. Cook AKA "Rusty" bccook@nh.ultranet.com
I am still trying to find out what happened to the branch of my family that went to SD around 1885. Francis Cook married Nellie and they had two children, Cleon and March. Francis died in 1899 in Woonsocket, Sanborn Co, SD and is buried in Eventide Cemetery. I saw where Cleon graduated from Woonsocket HS in 1910 and March in 1915. Can't seem to find anything else on them. I did find where a Cleon Cook married a Viana Walker in Livermore Falls, ME in 1922. Don't know if my Cleon might have migrated east and wound up there, but so far only clue I have. Anyone on the list familiar with these names and can give me new info? Also, if there is anyone who can get me some pages from a book done in 1983 on Sanborn Co and Woonsocket for a Centennial I would like copies of about 5 pages. It's called "Reminiscing...A Centennial History of Sanborn Co. & Woonsocket - Jostens Pub. I'm hoping to find out some info on them from it. Thanks, Linda Garrett

Looking for information on a Damaris COOK(e) who married an Ebenezer BOGUE (BOOGE). I have been given to understand that Damaris & Ebenezer are parents of my ancester, Jeffrey Amherst BOGUE b.1759 CT. I have been told that Damaris is daughter of a Capt. Samuel COOK(e), who is descended from a Francis COOK(e) of the Mayflower. Would appreciate any help I can get to prove or disprove the above, as well as information on this particular COOK(e) line. I have received a lot of information but when I ask for documentation, none is forthcoming. Would someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you. Marlene Johnson Sand Springs OK
