    1. [COOK-L] Cook-Caudhill Shooting.
    2. G. E. Sonny Vaughn
    3. I found the newspaper clipping copied below in the Bible of my great-grandfather, Thomas Asa Davis. The masthead, date, and other publication information had been cut away; however, from the 1870 census of Letcher County, Kentucky, I know that Emory "Em" Cook was born in 1867. The article's reference to his seven children would make him between 25 and 40 when this incident occurred. Therefore I feel as if the shooting took place between 1893 and 1908. "KILLED EACH OTHER IN FIGHT On the head of Machs creek in Perry county a tragedy was enacted which resulted in death for two men. Reports state that Em Cook, a citizen of the neighborhood went the home of a Mrs. Caudill and her son, Charlie Caudill. Having whiskey and drinking freely soon the men became intoxicated and it is said Cook became so boisterous that Caudill attempted to drive him away with a shotgun. Cook drew his pistol and soon two shots rang out. Both fell, Cook shot in the stomach and dying instantly, while Caudill lived about thirty minutes. Cook was married and the father of seven children. He was a son of Uncle Jake Cook of Dry Fork, this county, and was highly connected, being a brother to Preacher John Cook of Imboden. Caudill belonged to the large Caudill family of the lower section of the county and was well connected. His wife is dead but three children survive. It is said there was nothing whatever between the men except they were drinking." Should anyone have additional information on this matter please contact me by e-mail. Incidentally, I am the g-g-grandson of Jake Cook. G. E. 'Sonny' Vaughn e-mail address: [email protected]

    3. Thanks for providing that information in that form. I don't have that exact one (what year is this for?). However, I already knew where they went. My sister and I have already talked with Richard's descendants, but none of them know where in Georgia he was born. Just that he shows up in Warren County in 1850. I have come to the conclusion he is an alien being placed on this planet back then as an adult :-0 At 11:44 AM 2/23/2002 -0800, Hancock's wrote: >You probably already have this, but just incase you don't? >I could not find your Jessie Joyce COOK?? > > Census Place: Boston, Thomas, Georgia > Source: FHL Film 1254167 National Archives Film T9-0167 Page 449B > Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace >Richard L. 1. [COOK-L] Chat - Surname, County & State please
    2. RE: Surname, County & State It sure would be helpful to all of us if everyone would list the County and State in their messages of who they are looking for. I noticed a lot of people start out with the county, but never mention the state at all. Think that might be why some people don't respond. When you subscribe to a lot of surname mailing lists, it just makes it easier reading them if you have as much info on the Surname, County & state right up front in the opening part of the message. This is not a complaint, just thought it would make it easier for all of us. Thanks for your time.

    2. Ken
    3. I have a brick wall. It is my gg-grandfather, Richard L Cook. I have traced him back to the 1850 Warren County census where they are married. He is 21 and she is 18 or 19. They are in the 1860 Warren County census. He is listed as a railroad worker. Then they are not in the 1870 WC census, but I know they moved to Thomas County after the civil war. There is only one other Cook household (a 52 yr old woman and a 9 yo child) listed in the 1850 WC census. I can't figure out, if he was born in WC then why is only one other Cook family listed. I would have expected siblings, even if his father had died. I am trying to locate his siblings and parents. No luck so far. No one in the family knows where he comes from and there is no lacking of his relatives in their 70's 80's and 90's who should know if anyone should. SIGH! If you have internet access, you can find a picture I have of Richard L Cook here: http://www.oh-possum.com/ken/photos/richardlcookandlucy.jpg

    1. [COOK-L] Bedford TN to Calloway KY
    2. Robert Nicholson
    3. Virginia, Specifically which of these people are you interested in? As you probably know, the Thomas Cook and Miley Marcum Cook that you mentioned are the subject of the book on the Cook family in Bedford County, TN by Jerry Wayne Cook. Jerry Wayne Cook lists his Cook line as being of English descent. However, there are other Cooks in Bedford County, TN at the same time who are definitely not of English descent. It also appears that some researchers have gotten these two Cook lines intermingled so be prepared for more than the usual frustrations when dealing with these people. Robert Nicholson
