    1. [COOK-L] COOK / HELTON / SHOFNER / HART / NC - 1790s
    2. Robert Nicholson
    3. Thanks to the efforts of Janet Gerringer, a handwritten copy of the original marriage bond between John Cook and Hannah Helton in Orange County, NC in 1796 has been found. This is an "official" handwritten reproduction of the original record. The printed version of the North Carolina marriage bonds usually lists the information in this bond as follows: "John Cook and Hannah Kelton. Married: December 17, 1796. Bondsman: Martin Shofner. Witness: M. Hart." While the handwriting is difficult to read, it appears that the above information is incorrect on several points. The name "Kelton" should be "Helton", which is a conclusion that a number of researchers had already reached. The date of the bond actually appears to be December 27, 1796 and presumably the marriage took place on that date or a later one. The name "M. Hart" could also easily be read as "H. Hart". These four families are interconnected in NC and elsewhere. Martin Shofner's wife was Catherine Cook. Some Shofners married Harts. And the Heltons (Hiltons) lived near the Shofner's in NC. Does anyone have any information on the ancestry of John Cook and Hannah Helton? Robert Nicholson

    3. Interesting maps online, including historical atlas maps of Alameda (1878), Solano (1878) and Santa Clara (1876) Counties. NOTE - these are just three of the newest maps on the site - there are many more. One way to view these maps is to go to the homepage http://www.davidrumsey.com/, and click on "view collection with Insight browser." If you're familiar with the website on the San Francisco Museum, you'll know how the browser works - but you can click on any picture to make it as large as you want. 3. I am trying to trace the descendents of George COOK(E) and Susan Eliza MATTHEWS. George was born in Clapham, Surrey, England in 1834 to parents Elizabeth, nee APPLEFORD and William COOK(E). Elizabeth was born in Tilehurst, Berkshire, but nothing is known about William Cook(e)'s origins, except that he was not born in Surrey (courtesy of census information). Elizabeth and William's children, born between 1825 and 1842 were named Elizabeth, William, Charles, Edward, George, Richard, Henry Edward, Emma Clara and Ann Elizabeth. Only William, George, Henry, Emma and Ann survived past infancy. George arrived in Nelson, New Zealand in 1864. He met and married a local girl Susan Eliza Matthews and went on to have eight children (Clara Jane, Charles, Eliza Georgina, Maude, George, William, Walter and Frank). I would be grateful for any information. Regards Beth New Zealand [email protected]

Here lyes ye body of Mr Caleb Cook who decd Febry ye 5th 172 1/2 in the 72d year of his age. Caleb Cook , son of Jacob and Damaris (Hopkins) Cook , born March 29, 1651 , and resided at Rocky Nook, Kingston . He will be remembered as the person connected with the death of King Philip . He was a soldier under the lead of Col. Benjamin Church , and while closely pressing the Indians, Cook , and an Indian named Alderman , of the Seaconet tribe were placed on duty to watch Philip , lest he should get out of a swamp, where he had hidden, and if possible to kill Philip . He soon had a chance, and fired at him, but his gun missed. He then bid Alderman to fire, and he soon became their victim, having been shot through the heart. Mr. Cook exchanged guns with the Indian, and the gun which did the fatal work has been kept in the Cook family till quite recently. The old flint lock was taken off and presented to the Massachusetts Historical Society. Part of the gun is in the Cabinet of Curiosities in Pilgrim Hall, Plymouth .

    1. [COOK-L] Edward COOK and sons, ENG>NJ>NY>TX, 1810's
    2. Good Afternoon Everyone: I'm gradually piecing my COOK family together. I've located my ggg grandfather Benjamin COOK in the 1850 census of Saugerties, Ulster Co., NY: Benjamin COOK, b. abt 1810 England Susan " w/o b. abt 1814 NY Susan A. " d/o b. abt 1832 NY George E. " s/o b. abt 1835 NY James " s/o b. abt 1839 NY Mary E. " d/o b. abt 1841 NY Harvey H. " s/o b. abt 1843 NY Adeline " d/o b. abt 1845 NY William H. " s/o b. abt 1848 NY Ann E. " d/o b. abt 1851 NY By 1860 this family had relocated to Danbury, Fairfield Co., CT. With the help of a few old personal letters postmarked Sealy, Texas, I believe I've found Benjamin's brother and parents. Susan A. COOK had moved to San Felipe, Austin Co., TX sometime in the 1850's to be with the family of her uncle William, and in the 1850 census of San Felipe I found: William COOK, b. abt 1813 England Mariah " b. abt 1800 England Ann " b. abt 1836 NJ Mariah " b. abt 1838 NJ William " b. abt 1838 NJ Eliza " b. abt 1842 NY Norman " b. abt 1845 NY Edward COOK b. abt 1778 England Ann " b. abt 1790 England So, it's possible they immigrated to the U.S. after 1813, lived in the NYC/NJ area for a number of years, and then separated, with Benjamin moving to Ulster County, and William, with parents, to Austin County, TX. If anyone connects with my family, or has anything more to add, please contact me. Jeff Gray

    3. Donna, This is "definitely" the church that some of the Wayne County, TN families attended before moving west. Michael Shofner, the original Shofner/Shoffner immigrant, and his wife plus Michael Fogelman, the original Fogelman immigrant and brother-in-law of Michael Shofner, and his wife are buried there and their graves are well marked. The Michael Shofner line in particular had many, many contacts and inter-marriages with the Cooks who later moved to Bedford County, TN and beyond. If any early records for St. Paul's Lutheran Church can be found, and it is unlikely in my opinion, they should be a gold mine for all of us. Robert Nicholson ----- Original Message ----- From: James Duckworth To: Sheron (Pruitt) Reid ; Cook-L ; Nelda (Cook) ; Robert (Cook) Nicholson ; Bud Cooke Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 9:47 AM Subject: Fw: Church records - This is a letter that I received from the pastor of the church. This is "probably" the church where some of the Wayne Co., TN families went before coming west. Donna ----- Original Message ----- From: W. N. Hoss To: Donna Duckworth Sent: Monday, April 08, 2002 5:08 PM Subject: Church records - Just a synopsis: Saint Paul's is the oldest Lutheran church in Alamance County, NC, with worship conducted here as early as 1745 with duly elected deacons and elders in charge of religious services. Itinerant pastors preached here as early as 1759 until 1764. Because 1770 marked the earliest documented date for the church organization, this date is used on the cornerstone of the church's fourth and current structure constructed in 1960. The first church was a log structure built around 1789 and was a Union church with the German Reformed until 1800 when the Reformed members withdrew and built a church of their own. The church was originially called Graves Church because it was built on 60 acres of land given by the Jacob Graves family. The name was changed to Saint Paul's about 1849. Pastor Adolphus Nussman arrived in America from Germany in 1773 and was the first ordained Lutheran minister in North Carolina. He served Saint Paul's and other Lutheran churches in ce! ntral and western North Carolina from 1775 to 1789. The Reverend W. N. (Bill) Hoss has served as Pastor since July of 1999. I will have to see if I can track down any records prior to 1800. I doubt it, but we shall see. Your friend in Christ, Bill Hoss

    3. This is a letter that I received from the pastor of the church. This is "probably" the church where some of the Wayne Co., TN families went before coming west. He served Saint Paul's and other Lutheran churches in cent! ral and western North Carolina from 1775 to 1789. The Reverend W. N. (Bill) Hoss has served as Pastor since July of 1999. I will have to see if I can track down any records prior to 1800. I doubt it, but we shall see. Your friend in Christ, Bill Hoss
