    1. [COOK-L] HISTORY: Joshua Flood Cook, LL.D, 1834-1912
    2. Dr. Joshua Flood Cook was president of LaGrange College, LaGrange, MO, 1866 to 1896 and a Confederate chaplain. He is the author of "Old Kentucky" (out of print) in 1908. This book exemplified the lifestyle in Shelby County, Kentucky before Joshua traveled west. You will be intrigued with the southern setting and will get a "feel" for his life and its importance. Seventeen pages of excerpts from this rare book will be found in "Following the Life of Joshua Flood Cook, LL.D, 1834-1912" at Ancestor Stories, compiled by Charlie Cook, 1st Cousin twice removed. http://www.ancestorstories.org/cook/charlie/jfcook.pdf Joshua Flood Cook b. 3. Dear Hollis, My ancestor, George Cook, died in 1814 in Jefferson Co. GA. One reference says, "George Cook of Hancock, Co.", but I have never been able to find any indication that he lived there or owned property in Hancock Co. I know he owned property in Screven Co., but I don't believe he lived there either. His mother and two stepfathers were Loyalists and George lived for much of his life in East FL. I have been looking for years for his deceased father and where they were before the Revolution. He married Jane Ashley, daughter of Nathaniel Ashley and Jane Williams. Ashleys lived in East FL, Camden Co. and Telfair Co., GA. I have a good bit of info beginning in the 1780's, but not much earlier. Would be glad to share. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 1. [COOK-L] COOK, Emily death
    2. Can anyone relate to either Emily or B. F. COOK? This is from a Randolph County, MO newspaper. Friday, 7 Nov 1924, Vol 38 No. 29--Mrs. Emily Cook Dead--Mrs. Emily Cook was called by death on Friday night, November 1st, 1924, at 1:35 o'clock. She was stricken with paralysis on Tuesday night and lived but three days. Her death was a shock to all her relatives and friends. She is survived by one child, Mrs. Ira Kirby, three brothers, John Blansett of Illinois, Mose and George Blansett of this place; two sisters--Mrs. Mary Kimbrell of Glenwood, Mo., and Mrs. Dave Robb of this place. Emily Blansett was born February 18, 1851, near Mt. Ararat church and lived in that neighborhood most all of her life. She married B. F. Cook October 14, 1877, and was a devoted wife and mother. She united with Mt. Ararat Baptist church in 1889 and lived a consistent Christian life. Mrs. Cook will be missed by all who knew her. Our sympathy goes out, especially to her daughter, Mrs. Kirby, who has lived with her all of her life, and the two grandchildren who dearly loved her. She will be sadly missed for it is a sore trial to give up loved ones. But she is not lost to us forever, for we can meet her at the throne of God. She is gone, but not forgotten, for the memory of her kind words and loving deeds will long be remembered by those whom she has helped. She has left this world of care and trouble for a brighter home above and "Twas not in cruelty, not in wrath, The reaper came that day. 'Twas an angel visited the earth And took your mother away."

    1. [COOK-L] COOK, Mary: my brickwall
    2. Brenda Dillon
    3. I am new to this list so please bare with me. Mary COOK born abt 1815 unk married James SPENCER 1833 Greenbrier Co. WV, as his second wife. James had 11 children by first wife Elizabeth Hapenstal and 9 children by Mary. I have not been able in 30 years of searching to find out where Mary came from or what happened to her after the 1850 Nicholas County WV census was taken. One clue is the War of 1812 pension application of James which identifies him as INDIAN. It is hard for me to vision a 1831 MR MOM bottle feeding and careing for a set of twin infants plus 9 more small children and run a frontier farm. I believe Mary Cook could have also been Indian. From census I gather she was 18 years old when she showes up in the Spencer household. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
