    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Cookstuff@aol.com To: COOK@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 5:48 PM Subject: [COOK] Most Wanted - William Cook I MOST WANTED - William COOK I WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW: William Cook I was probably born about 1700 and married Anne Griffin (Griffith). Only known child was William Cook II, born about 1725 and died about 1784 Franklin Co., KY. He married Margaret Jones about 1750 in VA. There is speculation that William Cook II may have had a brother John Cook. William Cook I may have been living in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1770 when William Cook II was involved in a lawsuit there. We know that William Cook II started his married life in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1750, lived in Halifax Co., 1752-1767, lived in Pittsylvania Co., 1767-1777, lived in Franklin Co., 1777-1784 and died in Franklin Co., KY about 1784. An account written on an old Bible fly leaf with the printed title, "Family Record", subtitled, "Miscellaneous", appears in a copy of Hitchcock's New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible [Roswell Dwight Hitchcock, 1872] which apparently belonged to Isaac and Nancy Sacra Cook and/or one of their children. Isaac Cook is the second son of William Cook III. The first page of the Bible narrative reads: "William Cook, I, emigrated from England in the beginning of the Seventeenth Century . He married a Miss Griffin and reared one son William, II. He married Margaret Jones about 1750, and reared 5 sons and 3 daughters. William III Son William II and Margaret Cook, married Catharine Croucher about A.D. 1795, and reared Jesse II, Rachel II, Isaac I, Nancy I, Hosea II, William III, Abraham II Rhoda I, and Seth the II." The name Margaret appears to have been written over the word Miss. The statement "beginning of the Seventeenth Century" obviously is an error intending to mean the beginning of the Eighteenth Century or 1700. The names Griffin and Griffith appear to be interchangeable in early public records. Catharine Croucher would be Keturah Catherine Crutcher. WHAT WE DON'T KNOW: If William Cook I emigrated from England as stated on the fly leaf of an old bible, we do not know the ship that he traveled on or port of entry. We do not know his or his wife's ancestors. We are not sure of the county where he lived in VA. A tradition heard in one branch of the Cook family has William Cook I emigrating to America from Northern Ireland to escape political harassment. This could be true, but it is likely and logical that he was a native of VA. SEARCH: International Genealogical Index (IGI) - William Cook I does not appear in the database. 2. I have researched this Cook family from Georgia also. I have a copy of the death certificate for Martha Emily Cook, and have seperated the "Ga" Cooks from the Tennessee Cooks, that were in the same area at the same time. G. W. Lackey was the informant on her death certificate, and a son of Wm Joseph Barnes Cook, James Clinch Cook, married into the Lackey family, twice. Martha, daughter of CHW Cook and Martha Emily Adams Cook was the wife of G. W. Lackey, the informant. This family is buried at Crossroads Cemetery in Greene Co Ark. If my records are correct, I show the father of the Soldiers killed fighting for the south, as well as CHW Cook was a Jessie Cook b. in Ga. in 1807. Nelda Cook

    2. Well, howdy ma'am!! I've seen your names, but at this point , can't figure them out. one of my ancestors, is Mary " DICEY" WALDROP, she married ROLAND BROWN, from S.C. at age 13 , she is the daughter of James Waldroup, the only R.S. of mine I've documented. I have a copy of ROWLAND and DICEY'S marriage license. Roland came to GA. from S.C. to what is now Clayton county, GA.but he couldn't stand it in GA. without " DICEY" so he went back to S.C and got DICEY and was headed for Henry county, GA. but they couldn't wait so they stopped in Putnam county, GA. and got married. ROWLAND was 17 . They had a bunch of children, I believe a dozen or so. One son is WILLIAM BROWN, he married CATHERINE SIMPSON, moved to HARALSON COUNTY, GA. Their dau. CATHERINE VICTORIA BROWN married JOHN TAZEWELL LATHAM, JOHN TAZE and CATHERINE VICTORIA" VICKIE" is my mother's grandparents. I was hatched in HARALSON COUNTY, GA. up on a hill, and guess where I live here in TN.? yep! up on a hill!! Wallaceearlcook.com

    3. I agree, there must be a "million Cook Tribes". My Ambros(e) Cook appears in Wilkes County NC with his brother Samuel Sterling in the early 1800's. Samuel Sterling went to MS/AL and can be followed from there into TX. Ambrose married Aley Bell in Wilkes Oct 28, 1828. There is also a marriage recorded on Jan 17, 1829 in Surry County, NC. There were 4 children born to Ambrose and Aley; Samuel, 16 Mar 1830, David, 1831, William Pinkney, 10 Jun 1839 and, my g-grandfather, Andrew Martin, 20 Apr 1849. I have been searching for the ancestors of Ambrose for many years without success. Ambrose may have been Scotch-Irish?? Are these people familiar to anyone?? Thanks for reading this!

I am working on wife's Father's genealogy, that would have been her Father's Grandpa I think...... her father was - George Warner Cook. Would have to do some checking to find out for sure. Their clan came from down in Georgia, near Atlanta, believe it was Fulton County.........possibly Carrolton County........ olejohn@grnco.net - if this is the one and the same Christopher Harvard Warner Cook.........I would appreciate any information...... 3. Wallace Earl, having a John Cook myself, as most everyone else does (John & Sarah Fulton Cook b. abt. 1715 Ireland, came into PA where he died, then she & children moved into Cherokee NC/now Union Co SC with Revolutionary War era sons, John, Robert, Hugh, my Thomas & possibly James), I'm curious if there's info other than census records in Marie Taylor's book and where you found it. Loved Jeff's crack about "Dicy"! 3. There must be a million "Cook" tribes! I have looked for some time for the parantage of Isaac Cook b about 1759 in Charlotte Co., VA. He and his family moved to Wilkes Co., NC when he was in his late teens. He died on Yancey Co., NC just before the 1840 census. Probably, or maybe, Yancey was formed out of Wilkes? Anyhow, wooud appreciate a clue. Isaac was my GGgrand- father. His youngest son, Elisha was his youngest son and my Ggrandfather. He d in Ukiah, Calif, 1883. Thanks, George E. Strawbridge, Atwater, Calif.

    3. Wallace, I've been looking for my cook ancestry for a long time, but have been brick-walled at Jessie Morgan Cook, who lived in Morgan County, GA. He lived from about 1854 to 1918, and married either Virginia Hawkins or a woman named Maria. His mother is listed as "Dicy" (I don't know if that was her name or a commentary on her mental state at the time :) ) who appears to have been born in 1811. You mention a Jessie Cook in your email below--do you have any idea whether there might be a connection between your Jessie Cook and mine? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've been trying for 20 years without success to extend my family name back beyond this point. Thanks!
