I am looking for John Cook who married Elvira Garrison. They lived in McCracken Co., Kentucky. He died early on the Mississippi River. Elvira remarried to a Galbraith and had more children. They had about 5-6 children namely. Nancy Melvina Cook who married James M. Parkhill Nov. 15, 1868 in Greenville, Hunt Co., Texas --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail.
Hi Mary-Gene, We have been in contact before. I have done a lot of research on this family and found that John Cook married Elizabeth "Betty" Ballard. Herbert Cook is my line. William I do not have the exact date of birth for but he was not born in 1969. He married to Fanny Rainey in 1803. Herbert was married twice, first to Penelope Taylor in 1802 they had no children she died very young and he married again to Sarah "Sally" Walker in 1805, they had 4 children I am descended from two of them. "Happy" Cook married John Taylor brother of Penelope mentioned above in 1802, no children. John Cook, Jr. married Sarah W. Pennington in 1812, they had 7 children. Elizabeth Cook another child born about 1781 married to Richard Ussery Lemay in 1804, they had 10 children.(source for Richard Lemay is Betty Butler.) Martha Cook married to Williamson Rainey in 1810 they had 12 children. I do my research at the Library of Va. and have been through many Mecklenburg County records through many years, marriages, deeds, wills, estate accounts, court orders, etc. and have verified a lot of this information and got a lot of it from the records. I do have more than I have posted here. With the new activity, let me post my brickwall once again: Seeking the identity of a female Cook/Cooke (FNU) who married (ca. 1815-1818) my ggg-grandfather Lyddall BACON of VA & SC, later migrating to Bibb, Elbert, Richmond, Stewart counties in GA, settling in Marion county, GA. She would have been born ca. 1790-1795, and probably died before 1850. She and Lyddall had daughters Keziah, Martha, Elizabeth, and Sarah (Sallie) and sons Edmund & Langston, all born between 1815 & 1822. She is said to have been from strict Primative Baptist roots, and is thought to have married Lyddall when he traveled through SC from VA to GA. It is also believed that she had family who moved into Alabama close enough to Marion Co, GA, that her eccentric daughter Sarah (Sallie) would travel to and from there over the state line on foot to visit them. This is very interesting to me. But the timelines do not quite line up with my ancestors. My (3 greats) grandfather Elisha Cook lived in Oneida County, NY, in 1813 when his son Horace Cook was born. He later moved west to Erie County,PA, in NW Pennsylvania by 1830, but he could have easily gone to the Buffalo, NY, area after that. His son Horce Cook was married in 1835 to a Sophia Bligh who was from Delaware County, NY. The marriage listing is in the Buffalo, NY area listings of early marriages. We think that Elisha may have been born in CT. His wife was. Her name was Hannah (last name I don't know.) I wonder if your ancestors could have been related at all to these Cooks. I read somewhere that there were some Cook brothers who were laborers on the Erie Canal in NY. Good luck on your search. I sure love seeing all this activity on the Cook List, reminds me of the list when Ellie first started it. I really think this is a big first to see all these Southern COOK's usually it's the Northern one. Keep the names flowing, I love seeing the activity. Good Luck, Lisa Cleversey Martin Co-List Owner
I'm delighted to see the activity on our list. Do you have a Horatio Ross COOK in your lineage---born ca. 1818? According to US Census Reports, he stated New Jersey as his place of birth and his father was born in New Jersey and his mother in Maryland. No names were stated. He came to Augusta, GA ca. 1826 at the age of eight to live with an aunt. Confirmed in Saint Paul's Church in 1837 and graduated from the Medical College of Georgia (Augusta) in 1841. College records destroyed in Civil War and church record doesn't indicate sponsorship. I appreciate comments and suggestions. Edward Cook Sarasota, FL
Wish you all would take a look at the Cook DNA Page and get some more tests going, sure would like to find more matches for our James Cook- he is first found abt 1790 in Effingham Co., GA, and died about 1812 in Jefferson Co., MS. He married Margaret Hawthorne, their children were; I would love to have some DNA of my Cook line too, but I'm a female and I think they need males. I'm the only child and my parents both passed away in the '70s. I have a male first cousin in his early 70s, but his health is not that good right now. I wish he could take the test because that's basically the only male that I really know that close in my line. Susie

I thought it might be a good time to post again on this line. I'm trying to trace John Cook born 1797 somewhere in VA. He married Jemima Lacy in in 1830 in Marion County Indiana. They had a son Elijah born in 1833 in Indiana. The family eventually wound up in Crawford County AR.
I have a William Cook too that I have hit a brick wall for a long time now. I also have some information about a family tradition that my line of Cooks came from a royal family of England and escaped to America to avoid persecution for freedom. I guess it may be religious freedom. But here is my brick wall below, and I cannot find anything else on William Cook, exactly where he came from. This is taken from a post that I posted at a Cook message board: I have hit such a brick wall. I'm searching for William Cook, who perhaps was born in TN or SC. One of my records actually states NC, but I only have one record that states this. He was my great-great-grandfather. There are just so many William Cooks out there. I've searched through a large part of TN and no success there. Here is what I have on him. William Cook was born perhaps in TN or SC. His wife's name was Katherine (possibly Catherine?) I don't have a birthday or anything like that, but I do have his children's b-days and such. This family lived in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN for many years. William Cook was murdered by marauders during the Civil War in AR or MO. His body was never found. Here are his three boys: William Jasper Cook, b. 11/24/1835 in Chattanooga, TN. Thomas Jefferson Cook, b. 12/24/1833 in Chattanooga, TN. Samuel Doak Cook (my great-grandfather), b. 5/5/1844 in Chattanooga, TN. Helen Cook Bellah (married a county judge in Marble Falls, TX. Here is part of my family story from records. The three Cook brothers moved to Texas before the Civil War, while William Cook moved to AR or MO to avoid the effects of war. After no success there, he sold the farm and was preparing to move back to TN (sent his wife and daughter on ahead), when he was attacked by marauders, perhaps Jayhawkers, looking for money from the sale of his property. Since he had sent the money along with his wife, he could not satisfy their demands and they took him off and killed him. His sons, having come home to help the family move, attempted to locate him and the marauders with no success. Samuel Doak "Doc" Cook, who later became Rev. Samuel D. Cook in Young County, TX, told the story in latter years of having hunted down the villains and lynched them. His father's body was never recovered. Thanks, Susie
In my line is: John Cook Sr., md c1768 Betty BALLARD; found in Mecklenburg census 1790. Children of John and Betty: William B. (Sr) b 1969 md Frances RAINEY (note the time gap here) Kerenhappuck "Happy" b 1780 md TAYLOR Herbert b c1783 md WALKER John (Jr) b c1790 md PENNINGTON Martha - md RAINEY I am not at all sure of this information, and the gap is suspicious - although the Rev War took place in that time. If anyone has information on this family, I would appreciate learning it. I have descendants of William B. and Frances.
MOST WANTED - William COOK I WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW: William Cook I was probably born about 1700 and married Anne Griffin (Griffith). Only known child was William Cook II, born about 1725 and died about 1784 Franklin Co., KY. He married Margaret Jones about 1750 in VA. There is speculation that William Cook II may have had a brother John Cook. William Cook I may have been living in Pittsylvania Co., VA in 1770 when William Cook II was involved in a lawsuit there. We know that William Cook II started his married life in Lunenburg Co., VA in 1750, lived in Halifax Co., 1752-1767, lived in Pittsylvania Co., 1767-1777, lived in Franklin Co., 1777-1784 and died in Franklin Co., KY about 1784. An account written on an old Bible fly leaf with the printed title, "Family Record", subtitled, "Miscellaneous", appears in a copy of Hitchcock's New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible [Roswell Dwight Hitchcock, 1872] which apparently belonged to Isaac and Nancy Sacra Cook and/or one of their children. Isaac Cook is the second son of William Cook III. The first page of the Bible narrative reads: "William Cook, I, emigrated from England in the beginning of the Seventeenth Century . He married a Miss Griffin and reared one son William, II. He married Margaret Jones about 1750, and reared 5 sons and 3 daughters. William III Son William II and Margaret Cook, married Catharine Croucher about A.D. 1795, and reared Jesse II, Rachel II, Isaac I, Nancy I, Hosea II, William III, Abraham II Rhoda I, and Seth the II." The name Margaret appears to have been written over the word Miss. The statement "beginning of the Seventeenth Century" obviously is an error intending to mean the beginning of the Eighteenth Century or 1700. The names Griffin and Griffith appear to be interchangeable in early public records. Catharine Croucher would be Keturah Catherine Crutcher. WHAT WE DON'T KNOW: If William Cook I emigrated from England as stated on the fly leaf of an old bible, we do not know the ship that he traveled on or port of entry. We do not know his or his wife's ancestors. We are not sure of the county where he lived in VA. A tradition heard in one branch of the Cook family has William Cook I emigrating to America from Northern Ireland to escape political harassment. This could be true, but it is likely and logical that he was a native of VA. SEARCH: International Genealogical Index (IGI) - William Cook I does not appear in the database. Since so much is going on in the rootsweb can anyone identify the following: My great grandfather was James J. Cook, born 10-27-1858 in Broadway, Virginia. He married an Ida E. Myers. They both died and were buried in Jeffersonville, Ohio. I'm showing on his marriage certificate that his parents names were James Cook & Elizabeth Fisher. I can't get any further. Anyone have a connection? Ray Cook California
Thanks for the e-mail, JESSIE COOK, b. 1806 /07 GA.is my brickwall. I'm a direct descendant of JESIE COOK & ELIZABETH--------. My grandfather Pinkney Fillmore Cook, told me , we had relatives that came from TN. in covered wagons, to GA. Dred Coleman Cook, JESSIE'S son told our family he was 1/4 Indian. I'm inclined to believe that ELIZABETH (COOK) is where the Indian comes in, but can't prove that, Don't know ELIZABETH'S maiden name.
