    3. Thomas's father was supposed to have been from Massachusetts when the Revolutionary War started. I think he was probably a Loyalist since Thomas's mother appears to be from Canada, and they were living just across the border from Ontario. His parents names are supposed to be Robert Cook and Mary Lapp, but I'm not 100% sure on the father's name. My husband descends through the older son, Robert Cook, who settled in Ontario for a little while, and eventually made his way down to Clinton county, Iowa and settled in there until his death. We're really stuck on Robert's and Thomas's dad. We don't have much, if any, concrete information on him at the moment. I'm hoping that researching Thomas's family might unearth something! Thanks, and take care! "-) Justina Cook "-) On 10/9/06, Marilyn Hagedorn <mjh@mchsi.com> wrote: > > This is very interesting to me. 1. Re: [COOK] Quaker Cooks [was Wow]
    2. Mike, you probably know that these Cooks are members of the large, fairly well-documented family of Quaker Cooks. Peter Cook and Elinor Norman are the emigrants and all others descend from them and their (probable) 13 offspring. This is my Cook family, too, although I don't have this Isaac as he is not my direct line. If you have not done so already (I think you have, if memory serves, but just checking), be sure to post on the Quaker-Roots mailing list. Apparently Hinshaw (Encyclopeida of American Quaker Genealogy) says he was dismissed ("disowned") for disunity (acting contrary to discipline) in 1833 from the Elkton MM. I can't find any note that he was reinstated. 3. Hello again. Yes, I do remember you. The DOB for William Sr. should have been 1769 - it was a mental/typing error on my part. But I have in my notes that "Beth Bond" (that's you?) believes the birth to have been in 1780. I'm not sure that this William (md Frances Rainey) is a son of John Cook and Betty Ballard. 2. Glad to hear of another Cook line other than the English. I also have a John Koch from Virginia to Illinois and his son Henry Cook. This also is a German or Dutch line and most of my info dates from the Illinois period. Henry was born VA but shows up in Illinois with his father who I know almost nothing about. They were in the Kaskaskia area and end up in Greene and Madison Co, IL. Henry fought in the War of 1812 there, married 5 times and had a big family. Most of the family moved to Texas when Henry was 75 yrs old. Henry's son, another John, is my ancestor. I have worked on the theory that they came through Kentucky before settling in Illinois. Sure would be nice to find more about this line. 1. [COOK] Matthew COOK, Ontario, Canada
    2. Michele Chavez
    3. Hi Everyone, It is great to see all the activity on the list. I want to second what several others have said and that is, please participate in the Cook DNA project, if you have not already. My father contributed the DNA for our Cook family in the project. We are kit #10399 in Group 11 on the Cook DNA Project Results page: http://www.cookfamilygenealogy.com/DNA/results.html. The family's ethnic origins have alternated being stated as Dutch or German. A long-time genealogist cousin of mine, who passed away 3 years ago, spent a lot of time trying to prove a connection to the family in Group 17. The DNA project was very helpful to us in ruling out any connection to this other Cook family. Interestingly and confusingly, we have matched up DNA with a family named BOTTERON, whose origins are in Switzerland. Our Cooks lived in Canada in Ontario and Saskatchewan and descendants live all over Canada, New York, Illinois, and California. Our furthest back Cook ancestor and brick wall is Matthew Cook, who was born in 1808 in Ontario, died 1876 in Chesterville, Dundas, Ontario, though he lived and had a farm in Finch, Stormont, Ontario at the time. His wife was Catherine Herrington b. 1871 Osnabruck, Stormont, Ontario, d. 1895 Smith Twp, Peterborough, Ontario. In a history book of Dundas County, there is a person mentioned who read news from England, whose name was Matthias Cook, said to be a long-time resident at that time in the 1830s, but we don't know if and how he may have been related to Matthew or if he was Matthew. Matthew Cook and Catherine Herrington had children Melinda, Cyrus, Alexander, Susan, Gertrude Eliza, Sarah Jane, Charlotte Rebecca, Matthew, Samuel Ira, and Joseph Albert. There is a tendency in the family that continues on through the generations to go by middle names rather than first names. Melinda Cook married John Best, is in St. Lawrence County, New York, by 1870, later widowed with 3 children in Brown County, Wisconsin in 1880. Cyrus, Alexander, and Susan Cook seem to disappear from the record. I'd love to hear from anyone who has any information on whether they lived to adulthood and whether they had family. Gertrude Eliza Cook marries George W. Davis in Chautauqua County, New York, lives and dies in Frewsburg and Jamestown in 1885. Her sister Sarah Jane marries George Davis's uncle John T. Davis, also lives and dies in Chautauqua County, New York in 1899. Charlotte Rebecca Cook marries Allen Daniel Crysler in Finch, Stormont, Ontario in 1882. He dies in 1883. She does not remarry. She later settles in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, where she dies in 1917. Apparently, Matthew Cook died young, date unknown. Samuel Ira Cook marries twice, first to Mary Margaret Rombough, who died in 1882, then in 1884 to Helen Rosina Rogers, who was born in England. Samuel is buried in Kennedy Cemetery in Kennedy, Saskatchewan. His daughter with Mary Margaret Rombough, Mary Margaret Cook b. 1878, went to live with Gertrude Eliza Cook Davis in New York, and in 1900 married John Frank Sadler, and they settled in Elmira, Chemung, New York. Joseph Albert Cook, my great-grandfather, married Rebecca Eunice Boyce in 1880. They moved progressively west through Peterborough, Muskoka, and Nippissing, until they eventually settled in Windthorst, Saskatchewan, not far from Kennedy, Saskatchewan, where Rebecca died in 1919 and Joseph Albert Cook was buried in 1947. Sorry to have gone on and on. Michele Chavez Palmdale, California in the High Desert

    1. [COOK] Benjamin Augustine COOK, b. 1820, North Carolina
    2. Timothy D. Cook
    3. Greetings All, I am looking for any information on a Benjamin Augustine COOK. We have several birthdates for him ranging from 1810 to 1825. He was born in North Carolina, tradition has it in or around the Raleigh, Wake County area. He was married to a Mary Ann Jackson TUCKER. There is a marriage record for an Augustus COOK and a Mary Ann TUCKER who were married in December of 1841. They had a total of fifteen known children Benjamin and Mary Ann settled in Booneville, Surry County(latter Yadkin County) where he operated a blacksmith shop. The ledger books for his blacksmith shop were kept by a Joseph COOK. Benjamin and Joseph jointly owned land in the Booneville area. Joseph was the known brother of a Robert Henry COOK. There is no known relationship between Benjamin and Joseph or Robert Henry, however it is believed that they are some how related, as yet nothing has been found. In 1869 he purchased some land from a W. A. Poindexter. He sold his land to a T. L. Blackwell in 1883. He dies in 1885 near Wichita, Kansas. Most of his children went out to Kansas. The only son who stayed behind inn North Carolina was a William COOK born 1 October 1848. I know that this not much to go on but we have been looking for many years for anything. We have been in contact with a descendant of Joseph COOK who also has been unable to show any relationship between Benjamin and Joseph. They have also not been able to find any record of Joseph or Robert Henry before they turned up in the Booneville area. If any of this looks familiar please let us know. 2. My William Cook was born 1843 in Philadelphia. Moved to Illinois when out of grammer school. Always said he was an orphan and I can't find any record of him in PA or his family. I know a lot about him later, he fought in Civil War, married, had 11 children. One of the sons was my grandpa. Wish I could find more on his parents. 1. [COOK] MISSING from NY: William COOK b abt 1740-50, possibly England
    2. K Powell
    3. John Cook Middletown, Ulster, NY 1790 116-- William Cook Middletown, Ulster, NY 1790 262-- (down, same page) Robert Cook Middletown, Ulster, NY 1790 2-4-- COOK JOHN NY DELAWARE COLCHESTER 1800 11-11|311-1 COOK WILLIAM NY DELAWARE COLCHESTER 1800 212-1|--1-1 COOK ROBERT NY DELAWARE COLCHESTER 1800 1--1-|32-1- John and Robert are brothers. Family lore calls their brother Joseph but the William here is as good or a better bet. William disappeared post-1800. Middletown Ulster Co is the same as what became Colchester Delaware Co. Look at all the sons and/or grandsons William had! There is no record found of his or a wife's burial, no local history accounts, and no spare Cook sons around after 1800 to account for him. I think they moved on. Children may be born NY or NJ, maybe even CT. So if you've got some dropped off by space aliens on 1810 census ... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
