    2. I have used Norton for too many years to count and always thought it did a good job. Now after reading these emails I wonder if I should find a new program. I recently have had trouble turning on my computer in the morning with all kinds of information to do things in order to turn on my computer, finally something called American Megatrends flashed on my screen and announced they would turn on my computer and my computer was opened. Do you have any suggestions? I live in the United States. Janet In a message dated 1/13/2012 9:39:12 A.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: DEM, I totally agree. In the early 1980's Peter Norton was my hero. Unfortunately, He sold out to Symantec in 1990. He was given a seat on their board, but, I don't think Peter was every involved in the code after that. Ever since then, Symantec have lived off Peter Nortons name, and their antivirus products have steadily got worse. In my opinion Symantec antivirus products are no longer of acceptable quality. Looking back over the years since the late 90's, I cannot remember a single clients computer that I DIDN'T have to take off nortons and install a decent antivirus product. I don't know if it's the same worldwide, but here in Ireland, every single new computer has got the stuff preinstalled. 3. I used to love Norton Utilities back in the 1980's. I was always curious about the inner workings of my computers and learned so much from that program. I used to use NAV in the early days, but it has become so bloated and useless. I have stuck with free AV programs over the last 10 years, at least... with no problems. I do see this "bloat" being introduced in free AV, as well, however... not something I like to see ! I always suggest looking at this Security List for ideas on programs that have been highly rated on quality and performance ... http://www.techsupportalert.com/pc/security-tools.html Here is a list of free AV software... Personally, I use Avast and Avira, but I am soon going to install Microsoft Security Essentials on all of my systems. I just keep hearing good things about this program... http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-anti-virus-software.htm How-To Guides http://www.techsupportalert.com/tutorials Regards, Kevin.
