Hi Lila, I guess I was confused because when I looked at the file that you sent me, I could see the umlaut on the line where Valentin Öhm is entered... not sure why I can see it but you cannot. Since the Ö showed up all right on print preview, I printed it with Cute PDF Writer (I downloaded and installed that after moving the doc on a flash disk to my laptop which already had Cute PDF Writer, then moving it back to the new PC). The umlaut shows up perfectly in the .pdf file. I also copied and pasted the .doc into my PAF notes, and the Ö transferred there okay. This is now "solved" although the "why" remains, and a corrupted file seems to be the best answer. Thanks much to all who helped!! Lila
