    3. In Microsoft Word (at least in version 2003) you type the letter, first, then insert the "Combining Diacritical Mark" from the Insert > Symbol dialog. Or, from the keyboard... To get a macron over a letter, type the letter followed by the Unicode followed by Alt-x, in other words (using the letter, "n," as an example), type: n0304 then hold down the Alt key and press x. This combination will only display in a font that recognizes the Unicode "Combining Diacritical Marks," such as Arial Unicode MS or Lucida Sans Unicode. Otherwise, you'll just get a little empty box because the font isn't capable of displaying the character. Whether or not this will work in PAF, I don't know, but it doesn't hurt to try. Diana P.S. The Unicode for an overline is 0305. > -----Original Message----- > > Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2009 08:00:09 -0700 > > To: computers@rootsweb.com > > From: trogs2@shaw.ca > > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Font question > > > > In Microsoft Works Word Processor click on Insert/Special Character. > > With the Symbol tab forward look for the macron on the third line, > > ninth column. 3. That almost works. I type n0304 then hold down Alt and type x, and I get capital N with a macron right *after* it, not over it, and I don't want capital N. I have Word 2003. I start with Arial font, but as soon as I do the Alt + x maneuver, it changes to Tahoma font. What am I doing wrong? 3. Not "Arial," use "Arial Unicode MS." > I type n0304 > then hold down Alt and type x, > and I get capital N with a macron right *after* it, not over > it, and I don't want capital N. > > I have Word 2003. 3. I tried in Word and PAF using Lucida Sans Unicode, and both work perfectly!! I'm keeping all this on file--Lucida is the only Unicode that is in either my Word or PAF font menu. Thanks so much!!!
