Pam - there have been a number of generations of USB port - the main ones being versions 1, 2 and 3. Version 1 was introduced in 1994, version 2 in 2000 and 3 in 2008. The main differences are those of speed - 2 was forty times as fast as 1 and 3 is ten times as fast as 2 (all speeds are approximate and could be less). For your computer to recommend that you user a faster port - I assume that it was built with a version 1 port. With version 1 supporting up to 12 Mbps, and most broadband connections being of that order or less, you do not have a problem. Version 2 and 3 USB ports enter their own when you use external disk drives which would use the available speed. I have used external disk drives with version 1 ports, and they do work - but noticeably slowly. Other uses are when using USB keyboards and mice. Again, they do work with version 1, but are much better with version 2. Adding version 2 ports to an older desktop computer can be done by adding a suitable PCI card and it is cheaper than buying a new computer. But you may not need version 2 ports. Chris
