    1. [COMPUTERS] Memory question
    2. Vanessa Stern
    3. My dad is running WinXP with 1GB RAM. He is questioning whether he would gain much in the way of speed if he were to increase the memory. I don't know how the memory is configured in his machine or how much it would cost to add more, but could he expect a significant increase in performance? I think he likes to keep a lot of IE windows open at once and I suspect that could be part of his problem. Vanessa

    3. Hi Vanessa, Adding memory can only help your dad's system, however, unless he is running some memory intensive programs, such as graphics programs or MS Excel, then he probably doesn't need the extra memory. I use a small program called MemInfo to monitor my memory usage. After installation, it sits on the system tray and you can hover over the icon to see how much memory is being used at that particular time. http://www.carthagosoft.net/meminfo.htm Memory is rather cheap, though, so it may be a wise investment to install the extra 1Mb. Regards, Kevin. 3. Vanessa - I found that increasing to 2GB made a huge difference. However, it did "knock a hole" in my small 30GB hard-disk on my laptop. This was a small price to pay as the extra memory made the system much faster.
