First, I would NOT use the MS Backup, it can ONLY be used on the same OS that the backup is made on, i.e., a backup from XP can NOT be used to restore files on a Vista machine. Get a GOOD backup program, there are several out there. We use TrueImage from Acronis.com. I am new to this list, as of today. And was hoping, that my question was appropriate to this list. And you have just answered the question, that I had, about my back-up, from my XP program, on my desk top computer, to Vista on my laptop. I was wondering why it wouldn't work! So now my other question! How can I get my Family Tree program information, from my XP back-up, onto my laptop, with Vista? I have lost my Family tree information, from my desk XP computer, so decided to install the disc on my laptop, hoping to get my tree back. Any ideas? If you still have the XP machine, restore the FTM data file(s) to the XP machine. Then using a USB Drive copy the file(s) to it and then copy from it to the Vista machine. You should be able to use Windows Explorer on the XP machine to copy the file to the USB drive, then move the USB drive to the Vista machine and then copy them using again Windows Explorer. I have Acronis TrueImage installed, and have a question about it. I live in tornado alley but am away from home a lot. I take the hardware, which is the size of a large paperback book, with me. Do I have to take its power cord and the USB cord along? If disaster happens at home, will it be possible to order another cord or borrow cords so I can retrieve my data? Unhooking everything is unhandy. Always carry the cords that come with any device. They were designed for THAT device and others MAY not work.
