    1. [COMPUTERS] New viewer on Ancestry
    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. Hi all and Joe in particular <g> I found that Ancestry have released a new enhanced viewer , blurb from them as follows (better instructions with diagrams on site) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Welcome to the New Advanced Image Viewer from Ancestry! Our image viewer is one of the most important parts of the Ancestry.co.uk service - our goal is for it to bring to life the wonderful historical documents we have in our collections. We also wanted to have an image viewer that brings full functionality to users with the vast majority of operating systems and browsers. We've been aware over the past months that launches of recent versions of browsers have caused problems for some users, especially if you are a Firefox user. We've been working to bring you a completely new viewer that solves these problems and which allows more of you to use the Advanced Image Viewer. In addition, we've been updating the technology we use to retrieve the images to make the experience faster and to give you more control over the image. Of course, with any update, there are also changes in the way some things work. We made great effort to keep the experience as similar to the previous Advanced Image Viewer as possible, but there are some differences. We outline some of these below, and we'd love to get your feedback. Over the coming weeks, while we roll out the new viewer, the old viewer will continue to be available through the options menu on the toolbar. We will discontinue the old viewer once we are confident we have identified and resolved any problems. What's New There are several new features and capabilities in the New Advanced Image Viewer: Rotate and Mirror. Two new features are available on the toolbar. Rotate an image 90 degrees at a time or mirror it (flip it over) can make reading some images easier. Try these out. (To get the image back the way it used to be, just click on "Rotate" or "Mirror" again until it looks right.) Zoom drop down. We have updated the options in the zoom drop down: Fit Image, Fit Width, Fit Height, and Full Size give you broad control over the initial size of the image. There are now many more levels of zoom so they didn't fit as well in the drop down list. Use the Zoom In / Zoom Out or mouse controls to get the image to the right size. Zoom controls. The Zoom in/Zoom out buttons remain to help you zoom in or out on an image. We have also added support for zooming in and out using the scroll wheel on your mouse or using the plus (+) and minus (-) keys on your numeric keypad. Image Panning. Use the mouse to click and drag an image around on the screen. Alternately, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the image. Please note that there are no scroll bars within the viewer. Support for more browsers. The Advanced Image Viewer can run on more browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Support for more operating systems. The Advanced Image Viewer can run on more operating systems, including Windows and Macintosh. Uses Adobe Flash Player. Some of the changes and additional platform support are enabled by the use of Adobe Flash. If your system doesn't support the Adobe Flash Player 10.0 or later, you will need to use the Standard Viewer. What's Changed Scroll bars. You may notice the scroll bars are gone from the image area. Moving an image is now done with the keyboard (using the arrow keys) or by clicking and dragging the image with the mouse. To do this, just click on the image and, while holding the mouse button down, move the image to another place on the screen. Zooming with the mouse. Use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on the image. You can also use the zoom buttons or the keypad plus (+) and minus (-) keys. Thumbnail view. From the Options menu, you can turn on the Thumbnail. This is similar to the "old" thumbnail, but is enhanced. Clicking and dragging in the thumbnail moves the image on the screen. If you have flipped or mirrored the image, those changes are reflected in the thumbnail. Faster Performance. The new viewer, and the new backend services that provide the images, are designed to be faster. This should help users who have slower internet connections. Image format. We are now "tiling" the images, which allows us to deliver just the pieces of the image at the right resolution that you need to view on the screen. As you zoom in or move an image on the screen, you may see parts of the image start out blurry and then become clear. This is caused by the next set of tiles loading. Overall, the images should load faster. Try it out; we think it works fairly well. Printing. The "old" viewer used a custom Print dialog. The new viewer opens the image in a new window and uses the standard Print dialog. Saving an image to disk. The "old" viewer used a Save dialog invoked from an ActiveX control, which caused security issues on some Windows computers, making the image difficult tosave (or it would sometimes save in a non-desired location). The new viewer uses a standard Save dialog that should avoid these problems. We want to hear from you! Please continue and take a short survey on the new image viewer. We appreciate your feedback!

    3. Hi Nivard. You email answers some questions. It has, for the last few day's hard to get the old viewer to work. It just sits there and won't download the image. This is true in Firefox and IE. I will be looking forward for their change. Thanks, Joe ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nivard Ovington" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 13, 2011 9:38 AM Subject: [COMPUTERS] New viewer on Ancestry > Hi all and Joe in particular <g> > > I found that Ancestry have released a new enhanced viewer , blurb from > them as follows > (better instructions with diagrams on site) > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > > Welcome to the New Advanced Image Viewer from Ancestry! > > Our image viewer is one of the most important parts of the Ancestry.co.uk > service - our goal is for > it to bring to life the wonderful historical documents we have in our > collections.
