I have many C D's with stored files ( genealogy records) in format of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Will windows 8 accept these files as is or do I need to put them in a new format; such as Open Office? I am getting a new computer with windows 8 and I did not get Microsoft Office on it. I need all the help anyone can suggest. Sue
Sometimes on online forms it's enough to put a string of zeros. Seems like the program just has to have something numerical in the field. Hi Bea The vast majority of spam around on the lists is coming from Yahoo addresses where the users address book has been compromised They are the most insecure email client around at the moment I was with Sky which used gmail until the end of March this year, as soon as I heard they were going over to Yahoo I changed everything over (80+ lists) and have had no problems I am in contact with a few who kept with Sky > Yahoo and are still having problems receiving all their mail I certainly wouldn't use Yahoo for anything like banking or financial matters I don't use web mail as I detest it, I use Thunderbird, very easy to use and I have it set to bcc to myself automatically so I get a copy of my own posts There are other ways to get a copy of your own posts but bcc was the easiest Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 22/08/2013 14:53, Bea 1935 wrote: > Hello, > > What problems have you found with Yahoo? Hi Bea As others have said just enter a random numeric to fill the space and it should be accepted Do you mind if I ask why you want to replace the gmail address ? I use gmail and have done for some time and find its the best going, so just wondered what problem you had with it I have other accounts for Yahoo and Bt but wouldn't trust Yahoo with anything Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 21/08/2013 21:09, Bea 1935 wrote: > I have been trying to get a new e-mail address to replace g-mail. Thanks for all those who replied to my query. I eventually able to get a new account this morning. It would not accept "fake" numbers for the cell phone space. I even tried a number that my daughter had on a phone that recently broke. (She may have already cancelled it ??) So, I used her real one. Hope she doesn't end up getting a lot of spam calls. The reason I want to get rid of gmail is that I hate not being able to see my messages to mail lists, nor am I pleased with the format of the overall display. Just my feelings - to each his own. :-) It does do a good job with the spam. I have been a Yahoo user for many years with no problems. Like the way the site looks and acts. Maybe it is just that I am use to it, but I find it is the easiest to use. My new address is from there now. I have a Hotmail account, and tried to make a new one there. Outlook.com, live.com and Hotmail are all connected now. It get a new one It suggested that I should make changes to my Hotmail account. Didn't look over the change needed too closely. Just gave up on it. Thanks again. Bea
I still have my Hotmail Account from over 10 years ago. It works fine. Also have a Yahoo email Account, which works well as well. But GMail is my preferred right now. I use it heavily, integrating the Calendars and what not. That's my 2 cents ! On Thu, Aug 22, 2013 at 9:50 AM, Bea 1935 <bea1935@gmail.com> wrote: > Thanks for all those who replied to my query. Hi Bea, Recently helped a friend sign up for Yahoo. She was unwilling to give her mobile number so she entered a fictitious number 07123456789 and no problems arose. Hi Bea, I have had this problem on occasion with online forms. One time it showed an example phone number and I left it at that. Sometimes I manage to repeat my land line in the box. But occasionally I have had to give up. Probably not much help but you're not the only person in the world. Hi Joan Do none of your documents open in Open Office or just the odd one or two ? Not sure what the cause of the restore was or what instigated it Could the mentioned duplicates be in fact back ups made by whatever program caused the restore ? The garbled wording is a little odd, certainly nothing I have experienced First thing to say is that your files are not *in* the program but are in its format Your files are separate to it so what you do to the program itself should have no effect on the files You should have a copy (a back up) at least of all files on your computer including all produced or in the Open Office format If not I urge you to do one immediately, preferably more than one, such as using an external hard drive or online storage (such as dropbox) Once you have backed up all your files, if the problem is with all files opening, I would then download a fresh copy of Open Office and reinstall it I have used Open Office for some years but not had the problem you are facing Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 19/08/2013 23:38, Joan Archibald wrote: > In the last couple days I can't get Open Office to perform. I downloaded Open Office on Fri. of last week and have been transferring files from c d's. I am not having any problem opening files and adding other information to them or starting new ones. This program is new to me. I need something to replace MS Word. I ordered a new computer that will not have MS Word and have lots of genealogy files I do not want to loose. Open Office is converting each C D that has Word docs. Sorry I cannot be more help. I will be interested to hear comments from others about Open Office. Hello, I can't solve your problem but I suggest after you figure out what has happened buy an external hard drive. If something happens to my computer I still have my records on my external hard drive. Another Joan
In the last couple days I can't get Open Office to perform. All my files I have saved are in this program and that is a lot of time and years of collecting health info and other important stuff. Once my netbook chose to 'restore' some of my files and so I have some that appeared o be duplicates and I was trying to consooidate and cull out repetitious.data., I worked with one file 2 nights ago getting rid of unreadiable content that started with "parn and lots of uninelligible words and I didn't get it all cleared up. Don't know why this happened but now I can't get into any of my files because those 2 I was working between keep popping up with the notification that the files will be recovered and the process begins. But once it says they are recovered and I click finish, they say "The program is not Responding" . I hope someone uses Open Office and might be able to tell me what is happening or how I can fix this so I can at least open my other Office files. I'd appreciate any thoughts Joan You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word: victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terror. Victory however long or hard the road may be. For without victory, there is no survival. Winston Churchill, May 1940
The problem was that it didn't print because it was asking for B5 paper. I turned off the printer and it got rid of the B5 message, and then I could print it. Thanks for your suggestion.
