Hi again Not sure whats happening there I should have asked and not assumed, you are using Windows 7 ? I know some devices use a cut down version of Windows and that may be why ? If so Try Start > Control Panel > under System and Security select Find and Fix Problems Then under Hardware and Sound Troubleshoot audio playback Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 25/09/2013 08:32, Joan Archibald wrote: > when I went to start and selected search and typed in trouble I didn't get > a chance to go further, because strange 2 part screen with w > > Windows search on left and empty panel where I typed in trouble but that > brought up files on my desktop. Thanks to Nivard and Wayne for help with repairing notebook screen. Now I have the problem of barely hearing any videos. Is there some setting on the Dell mini inspiron notebook to remedy this? I don't know how this has happened. --

Hi Wayne / Joan I agree that is certainly an option but I would first try a separate monitor You may only need to replace the notebook screen which is not that expensive and given it works with a separate monitor you can continue to use the notebook until you replace the screen on it A hard drive enclosure is cheap but then you are without the notebook, it would be more cost effective to replace the screen if possible Re the hard drive enclosure, there are different types of connection so make sure you buy the right type for your hard drive should you go that route They also do a hard drive dock which is a little more universal in that they can take IDE or SATA hard drives and generally have a card reader on them too Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/09/2013 07:28, Wayne Jones wrote: > Take the hard drive out of the netbook and buy an enclosure for it. Hi Joan It may well be just the screen that is damaged, they are quite fragile If the notebook boots up its quite possible the hard drive is OK I don't know your Dell machine personally but a quick google suggests it has a VGA port on the left towards the rear (it has a small monitor symbol on it) If you have a separate monitor around the house, you should find the standard connection is a VGA cable You may be able to connect said monitor and in effect bypass the screen to see and use the notebook and its contents Connect with both powered off When connected, power them both on and let the notebook boot up Machines vary, some will auto-detect the external monitor and ask which you want to use or you may need to use an FN key combination to switch to the monitor once fully booted up Mine uses FN and F5 combination to toggle one or other or both screen and monitor, your key combination may be different, look at the Function keys (top row of keys) for one with two little screens on, side by side, one in outline the other filled in, its a blue symbol To operate (once connected and booted up), hold the FN key down (second from the left bottom row of keys) then press the F key with the screen symbols on, holding the FN key whilst pressing the above described screen/monitor key should toggle between the notebook screen, the monitor or both together Try that if you can and see if you can get your normal screen view up on the monitor If so you can then use the notebook and copy the data onto another computer, or external hard drive, memory stick or whatever NB It is very risky not having a back up away from your notebook, once you are sorted out I would organise some method of back ups, preferably at least one to be kept away from home, you never know when fire or flood may strike Personally I would *not* send it to DELL, in my experience computer companies are very good at losing things, wiping hard drives or doing something that may lose your data If you can get copies of your data off the notebook then you might consider sending it for repair, however screens are not that difficult to fit There are many utube videos on the subject, it may not be your exact model but the following may give you an idea of what is involved <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0btmiphwJpg> If you don't feel able to change the screen yourself, I would try a local repair shop, asking for an itemised quote first *but only after you have retrieved the data if you can* Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/09/2013 05:49, Joan Archibald wrote: > Frinds on the list, > > > I had a senior moment 2 days ago that is going to cost me dearly not only > dach-wise but emotionally, I fear. Frinds on the list, I had a senior moment 2 days ago that is going to cost me dearly not only dach-wise but emotionally, I fear. Take the hard drive out of the netbook and buy an enclosure for it. They are easy it take out, usually with a small screwdriver, and then the drive goes into the enclosure and you have all your files and a spare hard drive (external) to boot! Hi Mary, This sounds like a Hardware failure (CD/DVD Drive, I suspect). Is the CD/DVD Drive working? It may mean that you need to have a Tech person install a new CD.DVD Player... they are not very costly... You did not say why you were running a diagnostic test on the Dell. This is a rather old machine... at least 5 years. Hope this helps... Regards, Kevin. Hi, Working on my nieces Dell Inspirion 530S, Vista. Ran the diagnostic test on Dell's website and both the Spindle test and tray out tests failed. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I assume I will have to go into Setup but from there I am lost. baby steps please. Mary

Kevin, The thought of trying to reconstitute the 20 plus pages of this file is quite depressing! The answer to your question is No, hence my problem. It may be Abstradome that my computer shop is using. I will ask them tomorrow when I contact them again. Thanks for all your suggestions. I have had a quick look but will now do so again in more detail. I am sure you are right that everyone should have one of these utilities installed. I have to decide which is the best. Recently my laptop had to be taken to my local computer shop for some work to be done on it. I was in the middle of working on a Word file. As I did not have access to it I found the copy of it on my external hard drive via my desktop. I did many hours of updating to the copy of this file on my external hard drive. As soon as I got my laptop back and opened it the programme that automatically daily updates my external hard drive came into operation overwriting the updated version with the earlier one. My external hard drive is presently with the computer shop who tell me that they may be able to recover the overwritten file. They are starting by scanning the drive. There are thousands of files on it and each file must have at least a thousand daily copies. So far the scan has been running for over 40 hours and it is not known how much longer it will take. I see free software advertised for recovering overwritten files. Does anyone have any experience of this type of software and know if there is any easier way of dealing with the problem than that being used by the computer shop? David
It is a tough lesson, David. Try to see if you can follow the documentation on how to recover Word Documents. Depending on configuration, Word does keep Temp backups, I do believe. I have lost files, as well... Now I back up everything I can ! The Hard Drive companies love me !!! I know you were already doing backups, but, perhaps, what you need to do is make, lets say, 3 "rolling" backups, where the oldest of the 3 is overwritten when you do a backup. Just a thought... Good luck ! Regards, Kevin.
