Thanks, Nivard! Some good tips there. There are several 'Business Related' programs that I run when I need to run in Administrator Mode or I don't have 'change authority'... only display. Here is more info on enabling Administrator Mode in Win 7 or 8... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/ And the many ways to "Run As Administrator.".. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11841-run-administrator.html Just to note... there are risks to running as Administrator... Admin vs Standard user: pros and cons http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/understanding-windows-7-uac.htm Most home users run as admin since it is easier to install/uninstall/update programs, drivers, games etc. The downside of running as admin is that malware, viruses and rootkits can do more damage to your system. There is also a huge possibility that you can unintentionally damage your system due to easier access to system tools like the Windows Registry (regedit) and the system configuration (msconifg). As a standard user, your access will be limited, but you will be able to do most things except for making system wide changes, adding/removing/ updating programs. Lori, I purchased an HP Compaq Elite 8300 All in One. Looked very impressive and for a while worked well ( came with Windows 7 Pro ) installed. It worked for a few months, then suddenly gave up the ghost. Contacted HP Tech Assistance and no one could work out the problem. After a couple of months procrastination, HP replaced the computer. I have had a number of problems with this one, and in the last instance, could not get the problem fixed by the Indian technicians. Finally, fixed it myself. I have little faith in HP Tech Support, and if I get another problem, will get rid of all the HP baggage on the computer and install my own copy of Windows 7, which I have purchased in anticipation. Having said that, the computer is now behaving itself. It must be aware of what is in store for it. There are a number of All in One Computers available, and I suggest a Google search, particularly looking at Reviews. Hope you have better luck than mine. I would suggest that, as with anything we buy these days (and, perhaps, always) you really get what you pay for. Computer and Printer components cost a certain amount... any less and you are getting inferior quality parts and will be headed for problems... The HP Envy 4500 is a very inexpensive printer and is not geared to being a workhorse. I am not saying that it is cheaply made, but it is made with a particular end user in mind... one who needs a printer, but not all that often. Review... http://www.digitaltrends.com/printer-reviews/hp-envy-4500-review/ My own experience with HP Printers & Laptops has been totally different. I purchased a mid-range B&W Laser printer (HP 1320, I believe) about 6 or 7 years ago and it has worked exceptionally since then. I do not print all that much... but when I need to, it is there. Companies I have worked for over the years have always used HP and they have all worked very well. I also have an HP Laptop (HP ProBook 6560b) I use for work and it works great and has for 5 years now... As far as desktop computers go, I do a lot of Photoshop and Video work, so I need a good desktop. Laptops just don't work well for this work. I am about to get a new desktop built for me, from selected components, in the next few weeks and I anticipate spending under $1000 CDN. That should be plenty to get a system that will last for 4-5 years of heavy use. It sounds costly, but when you consider that the cost is amortized over a number of years, I think it is worthwhile putting a little more in to get better components. My opinion... I'm open to any questions concerning any of this, if you want to... Regards, Kevin. On Thu, Mar 20, 2014 at 11:07 AM, <wstjs@aol.com> wrote: > > I totaly agree with Lori. I've built my own machines for years, but if you know someone that will build a custom system for you, it usually costs less overall and you get what you want without all the stuff you don't need. -----Original Message----- From: computers-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:computers-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dasmi1170@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 12:26 PM To: computers@rootsweb.com Subject: [COMPUTERS] (no subject) Hello, With XP soon to bit the dust and with my very old Gateway computer I feel I should buy a new computer. There are both pros and cons to an all in one -- for most being a con - if anything goes wrong, the whole thing has to be taken to the shop. Another con (in my opinion) is that most aren't expandable so you can't add anything (such as a better video card) that won't run through a USB port. Biggest pro is that they take less space as a general rule. If you decide to get one, make absolutely sure it has everything you need. I'm not comfortable with giving advise on what to buy for a new computer; however, I will say this if you Google "keeping XP after end of life" you will find good advise on how to keep your XP Gateway safe after the security updates stop. I have a Gateway XP laptop that works just fine, upgrading it or buying a new computer is not feasible for me to do right now. Something to think about if you are not really ready for new computer, but if you are I suggest going to stores that sell computers and find something you like. Sorry Janet Each to their own but I would steer clear of Norton especially if you are using an older computer as it slows down your machine markedly Just my opinion and I am sure like Janet there are others out there who rave about Norton but in my experience I have had nothing but trouble with it The first thing I do when receiving a new computer is remove Norton and associated bloatware When I was using XP I used the free Comodo firewall and Avast free anti-virus With Win7 I use the Windows firewall and Avast Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Robert, > > I highly recomment Norton since I have used it for many years without any problems. I agree with Nivard... Anti-Virus: Avira or Avast Firewall: Comodo Free Great products that do the job they are intended for... no more... no less. I have been in the Tech Industry since 1979 and was a heavy user of Norton, in the beginning (i.e. Norton Utilities was an amazing product way back), but have to say that, now, it and much other commercial software is nothing more than Bloatware and is too expensive for what it does. There are superior products out there. Even the businesses that I have been associated with over the past 20 years, use McAfee as their go-to security product.
