Hi David, Thank you for the input. I did know the difference and I have previously downloaded Acronis True Image and tried it and although it is supposed to be simple to use I couldn't make head nor tail of it. At which point I went back to System Restore and started using Sync Toy to back up my data to an external hard drive. Not sure which way to go at the moment. Kevin has given me some alternatives to True Image but it is still drive imaging which defeated me last time. I guess I will have to download one and have another try. Why am I not able to download any programs? When I try (various AV and other security programs), they do not complete downloading--only about half. I have tried turning off my firewall but with the same results. I have a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with WinXP. Thanks for insight into this problem.
Hi Listers, Can anyone suggest a `simple' replacement program for System Restore please? Other than Acronis true image which I found too complicated to use. Or could anyone suggest anything I have not yet tried? I use Windows XP with SP3 and all updates. The only new programs are Windows Office Home and Student 2007 and DeskTool. I havent upgraded or changed anything else. My antivirus is AVG free and firewall is Zone Alarm Free. I have Erunt, Spybot Search and Destroy, CCleaner Trojan Hunter, Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner but these last ones I run manually. In System Restore, the restore points are there, I can create additional ones manually, and the pc goes through the motions then comes up with the screen that no restore took place as it couldnt restore to an earlier time. Some months ago this occurred and I solved it by turning SR monitoring off then back on and getting rid of any corrupted restore points. This time that didnt work and the pc took a good 5 minutes before giving the unrestored message. I have reinstalled System Restore but the only thing that achieved was it reported the unrestore more quickly! I have now set ERUNT to back up the Registry on a daily basis but I understand that System Restore covers other more complex changes a user might have made other than the registry so obviously I need something more. Any help much appreciated and preferably in really simple steps as it took me ages to work through this lot! Regards Judith
Hi. Can anyone advise me on how to set up remote control for my sister's computer please? I am going over to Ireland shortly where my sister lives. I would like to set up her computer while I am there so that when I come back home to England I can help her when she gets into difficulties. Any advice would be very gratefully received. Hi Yvonne, If you can access Antivirus Sites, then it is not Conficker that you have been struck with. This is what the documentation pertaining to this worm states... http://windowssecrets.com/2009/03/30/01-Run-a-removal-tool-before-April-1 NOTE: The Microsoft tool is only dealing with the "B" version of the worm anyway, not the latest one... You have not said if you have updated your operating system (Win XP Home, Pro ???) with the latest patches (updates). This is important too. Also... the article also recommends running a program called Secunia to update all of your applications with the latest patches. I recommend this too. I would suggest that you do a thorough scan with AVG, insuring that AVG has been updated to the latest definitions first. And insure that you have a firewall, as well. You did not mention this in your list of programs. Regards, Kevin. Thanks Kevin, I am running AVG at the moment. I wised up and called a friend. I do have Secunia on Lyle's computer but he hasn't been paying any attention to it and we need to some updating on Adobe 9.0. His computer is up to date with the Microsoft patches. And we do have Commodo Firewall on his computer. So, as soon as AVG is finished scanning I will follow instructions and try to get everything cleaned up. Sorry, I really needed to be clearer in my email. I can access Antivirus sites on my own computer, but I didn't try with my husband's computer yet, as we had it unplugged from the Internet last night and when we turned it on awhile ago the message came up that he was infected. I felt somewhat overwhelmed. I will read the instructions on the website you sent and do what needs to be done. I truly do appreciate your help. Hi Jean, I suggest you read the following on Remote Access software... Best Free Remote Access Software http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-remote-access-software.htm It all depends how much "control" you want to have over the remote computer. One of the most important considerations is whether you want to have a software that allows you to control the system while it is "unattended". Specifically, ask yourself the question... would I need to be able to reboot the system from my remote location. To do this you need a software like UltraVNC which runs as a service on the remote computer and allows you to restart the system from your remote location. If you do not need this level of control, then you can use a remote access software such as CrossLoop. I have used this program with much success, but if you need to restart the remote system as part of your debugging process, you will need to have someone at the remote location do this for you. Hope this helps. Regards, Kevin. Hi There, It is highly possible that my husband's computer has been hit with the Conficker Worm. Last night a pop up occurred that stated he was infected. I couldn't get it close down no matter what I did. So, I went to the internet address on the pop up and I'm sure you know what happened. It took me to a porno sight more stuff there than I ever want to see again! Have you ever tried get out of a site with you eyes closed? His computer is Microsoft Sony Vista (new this year). We have unplugged it from Internet per instructions from some Microsoft information concerning this ugly worm. I scanned my computer last night with CC Cleaner, AVG and Spybot and so far I seem to be clean. I can go to all the Antivirus sites with no problem. Microsoft has a tool that will enable me to scan but I'm sure about using it. I am just overwhelmed here. Has anyone had any experience with this situation? I went to several websites last night and looked at removal tools. However, having never experienced this situation I don't know which tools are safe or really work. I note Microsoft has a removal tool does anyone have any opinions about how well it works. I don't have the experience to get into the registry and manually remove the virus at least I don't think I do. I really appreciate your help - thanks. Yvonne Yvonne
Hi Judith, I actually have System Restore TURNED OFF, as I have never had the need for it, personally, and have found that it always does more damage than good for those who have used it. I believe it MAY have a place for the user that makes, lets say, a simple MS Windows Update, finds the system does not act as expected after the update and wants to revert back to a previous state to remove the update. But why not just remove the program or update through Add/Remove Programs ??? The problems I have always found is that reverting back to a previous "copy" of the system only confuses the user and the system, as System Restore does not restore the system back 100 pct. as it was... it does not touch data, etc. It can also be devastating if you restore your system to a point before a major program update where you have since saved data which depends on the update for its formatting or the like. I believe it is far better to have a SOLID backup routine for your DATA, use a Disk Imaging Program to image your system periodically, especially just before any MAJOR updates and keep your system protected and cleaned up. Not sure about your data backup routines but you seem to have a great toolset for doing the latter. My suggestion is that you should really take some time to learn how to properly image your hard drive to cover all of your bases. There is a free disk imaging program called Macrium Reflect Free which is documented here... Best Free Drive Imaging Program http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-drive-imaging-program.htm Hope this helps. Regards, Kevin. The best File CleanUp program out there is CCleaner. It is recognized as such by many respected computer professionals. It is also updated regularly. The only issue with CCleaner is that many find it's default settings a little aggressive so please check the settings before you run it. Please read about it here... System Restore and TrueImage are two totally different programs and dot totally things different. System Restore will ONLY reset your Operating System settings back to the date selected. TrueImage and any other "imaging" program will back up the whole drive so that one can restore the complete drive to the time the image was made. As for TrueImage, if one was to use ONLY the default settings and do a complete image each time, it is a very simple program. http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-html-editor.htm But what software is for those who rely on WYSIWYG? KompoZerThat's a big ask. Possibly the free product that comes closest is KompoZer, and this is our top recommendation for newbies. It's a full featured WYSIWYG editor based on the Open Source Nvu editor. It fixes a number of problems in Nvu, though it still has some stability issues itself. The problem with this kind of software is that it needs continuous updating, because of the arrival of new browsers and browser versions, new versions of XHTML or CSS, Ajax, etc. Unfortunately, little is happening with KompoZer - the last release was in July 2006, while Nvu, the product on which KompoZer is based, is now discontinued. US-CERT Current Activity Conficker Worm Targets Microsoft Windows Systems Original release date: March 29, 2009 at 8:18 pm Last revised: April 9, 2009 at 6:44 pm UPDATE: Researchers have discovered a new variant of the Conficker Worm on April 9, 2009. This variant updates earlier infections via its peer to peer (P2P) network as well as resuming scan-and-infect activity against unpatched systems. Public reporting indicates that this variant attempts to download additional malicious code onto victim systems, possibly including copies of the Waledac Trojan, a spam-oriented malicious application which has previously propagated only via bogus email messages containing malicious links. US-CERT is aware of public reports indicating a widespread infection of the Conficker/Downadup worm, which can infect a Microsoft Windows system from a thumb drive, a network share, or directly across a corporate network, if the network servers are not patched with the MS08-067 patch from Microsoft. Home users can apply a simple test for the presence of a Conficker/Downadup infection on their home computers. The presence of a Conficker/Downadup infection may be detected if a user is unable to surf to their security solution website or if they are unable to connect to the websites, by downloading detection/removal tools available free from those sites: http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=u s_ghp_link_conficker_worm http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx http://www.mcafee.com If a user is unable to reach any of these websites, it may indicate a Conficker/Downadup infection. The most recent variant of Conficker/Downadup interferes with queries for these sites, preventing a user from visiting them. If a Conficker/Downadup infection is suspected, the system or computer should be removed from the network or unplugged from the Internet - in the case for home users. Instructions, support and more information on how to manually remove a Conficker/Downadup infection from a system have been published by major security vendors. Please see below for a few of those sites. Each of these vendors offers free tools that can verify the presence of a Conficker/Downadup infection and remove the worm: Symantec: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2 009-011316-0247-99 Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007 http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/worms/conficker.mspx Microsoft PC Safety hotline at 1-866-PCSAFETY, for assistance. UPDATED: US-CERT encourages users to take the following preventative measures to help prevent a Conficker/Downadup infection: * Ensure all systems have the MS08-067 patch. * Disable AutoRun functionality. See US-CERT Technical Cyber Security Alert TA09-020A. * Maintain up-to-date antivirus software. * Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open unsolicited email messages. * Use caution when visiting untrusted websites. * Use caution when downloading and installing applications. * Obtain software applications and updates directly from the vendor's website. * Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document for more information on avoiding email scams. * Refer to the Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks document for more information on social engineering attacks.
