My wife and I are both elderly. She is into genealogy. I do almost all the research for her and she does the rest. Our computers are Win XP Home. I have no problem with the free version of Zone Alarm but it is giving various problems for her. About the only time that her computer is connected to the internet is for updating. Anyone know of a free Firewall that is simple that could be installed in her machine. At one time I used the free version of Outpost but I don't know if that would be ok for XP or not. I know that XP don't recognize all firewall programs. Any suggestions? Joe

I am sort of thinking aloud here, but would appreciate any thoughts anyone has on the subject. I have a hugh cemetery survey on one of my web sites which, due to it's size, was surveyed and put on line in sections. Now I have tombstone photos and finding the correct section for each picture is a major headache. So I would like to merge the 12 sections now--I think. Is there a program which will do this for me or do I have to bite the bullet and do it manually, (in which case I will probably forget the whole thing)? Each section is done alphabetically. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with WinXP. Thanks for any thoughts/help.
I have xp home and updated yesterday. I keep showing I need to update and when I do it seems that it is B956572 I download and it finally says finished and I click that thinking I am done and then the shield shows an update is ready it is the same one so I tried again and the same thing. It looks like it has downloaded and then says finished and so on.. Is any one else having a problem with the last update? Or could it be something else I might need to do? Thanks, Barbara
Nope - I'm going to retire my old Gateway Solo - transferring the various licenses across. I know I'll need a brand new Vista license (which will come with the new PC), but believe I can transfer the Office XP license - though I will check with Microsoft. I have been given the opportunity of buying a Dell laptop with a 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium. While I may be able to make use of the 64-bit environment, I'd like to make sure that I'm not dropping myself into the "dark smelly stuff". So - does Microsoft Office Professional XP (e.g. with Access and Outlook) run on this 64-bit version? [I can't afford to update to the latest version of office just yet.] I will be checking for versions of drivers for external devices, and for such as Anti-Virus software - but Office is my main worry. Microsoft Malware Removal Tool works well however is a lengthy process because it covers all types of virus - if it is indeed "conficker" you could try "bd_rem_tool.zip" you should be able to find it by "googling". Good Luck Juneh Adelaide Sth Aust.

All you should need to do is enable file sharing on the computer you want to pull files from. You COULD do that on both systems, but the less sharing you have enabled, the better. It's also useful to have both systems use the same 'workgroup' name, makes sharing a bit easier.
I have a Dell PC using XP Pro, and a Compaq Laptop using Vista. Both are linked to my IPS via a wireless modem. The PC with a cabel and the Laptop by wireless conection. I would like to connect then so I can use all the files on the PC from the laptop, but I can't remember how to make the connection. Any help would be great. Hi Shirley I don't know what your problem might be, I have just checked by using a google search of AVG free and it lead me to http://free.avg.com/ On the left is states "Free basic protection" with a button "get it now" On the following page (where it compares the three options) scroll down and there are three buttons one below the Avg Anti Virus free states "download" Get AVG Anti Virus Free Edition 8.5 the following page has a "Download Now" button As an alternative you could use Avast which is again free and recommended by many Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) I am frustrated! I wanted to get the AVGris free download, but everything I try sends me to the next page. On this page it wants credit card info and nothing I click on takes me to a FREE download. Is this just a scam? I did an internet search and tried several different links and all of them does the same thing. Can someone send the correct link and where on that link to go or click? Hi Shirley It is frustrating isn't it? I suppose they have to try and get the money out of us so they don't want to make it too easy! Here is the download site. http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801 You will probably have to cut and paste this into the browser if it won't go all in one copy. Good Morning All I too have been using CCleaner for a long time ... ever since the angry young man who wrote the original aptly named it the 'Crap Cleaner' put it up for others. About 6 months ago I took up the recommendation from this list to look at Advanced System Care which is also free for personal use. There's a free download a IObit.com. I've been most impressed by AdvSysCare. Mind I still keep the CCleaner handy! US-CERT Current Activity US Tax Season and Phishing Scams Original release date: April 14, 2009 at 3:13 pm Last revised: April 14, 2009 at 3:13 pm In the past, US-CERT has received reports of an increased number of phishing scams that take advantage of the United States tax season. Due to the upcoming tax deadline, US-CERT would like to remind users to remain cautious when receiving unsolicited email that could be a potential phishing scam. Phishing scams may appear as a tax refund, an offer to assist in filing for a refund, or contain details about fake e-file websites. These messages may appear to be from the IRS and directly ask users for personal information. These messages may also contain a link and instruct the user to follow the link to a website that requests personal information or contains malicious code. US-CERT encourages users to take the following measures to protect themselves from this type of phishing scam: * Do not follow unsolicited web links in email messages. * Maintain up-to-date antivirus software. * Refer to the IRS website related to phishing, email, and bogus website scams for scam samples and reporting information. * Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document for more information on avoiding email scams. * Refer to the Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks document for more information on social engineering attacks. Hi Kevin, Thank you, I will have a look at it. I should have said that apart from now running ERUNT, I also run SyncToy to back up all my data on a daily basis to an external 1 terrabyte hard drive but of course unlike ERUNT there is no restore function with SyncToy. I am still doubtful of my ability to cope with a drive imaging program as I couldn't get my head around the Acronis one at all. I guess I will just have to try again and see.
