    3. Peter I would suggest that you get MailWasher. You can look at all you mail from the server prior to downloading. i.e. you don't have to go separate folder to check for spam. You can also create a "Friends" list, the mail from which goes directly to your email program. With respect to changing your email address, I did this several years ago. I was relatively spam free for several months but the more I used my address the more spam you I eventually received. The complexity of the address will have not an effect on this Bob Wilson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Metcalfe" <Peter-redfern@runbox.com> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 12:53 AM Subject: [COMPUTERS] Spam Suddenly I am getting about 100 spam emails per day and rising. If I was to create a new email address like p8*6&t^f£@etc.com would that prevent spam, reduce it a little or make no difference in the long term? At present 99% of it goes directly into the spam folder but unfortunatley so do some genuine emails so I still have to check them all. I would appreciate some advice please. 3. Morning Nivard, Thank you so much for your reply and your thoughts on IE v Firefox. I will download Firefox and give it a try. IE at present is crashing at least once a week so I've got nothing to lose. I also have trouble viewing some webpages with IE so perhaps this will improve that too. Thanks again for your help, I like the idea of Firefox saving the sites I'm viewing if it does crash. 3. Morning Kevin, To answer your questions ... I'm using IE 7, I hadn't updated to the newer version as yet. I am running an anti-virus which scans daily. I have a firewall on the wireless router. I think I will take your suggestion to download Firefox and see if it performs better. Thank you so very much for taking the time to reply. Yep have to agree with you on all points there If the disruption caused by people writing malicious code was as expensive as suggested, surely the big guns of the software industry would wipe it out (and they have the clout to do so I would say) but they make a tidy sum from ant-virus etc so thats unlikely to happen Re the site you posted, I do wish these sites would not use such dark colours for their pages its terrible on the eyes Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > > As well, I have always thought there was something very peculiar about > the whole anti-virus business... 3. It could be many things, Lee. What version of IE are you using? Have you recently updated IE to a newer version? Try reinstalling or repairing IE... (Instructions here from Microsoft for IE7 & IE8) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 Are you running an Anti-Virus software? Try doing a complete system scan to see if there is anything lurking in your system. Are you using a Firewall? (if not, install now... even if it is the MS Firewall) I would suggest that you download and install Firefox and see if you have a better browsing experience. Regards, Kevin. 3. I am quite cynical about these things, as well, but I also have to weigh that with the ever increasing need to secure my system. In the case of Secunia, they are targeting the Corporate accounts and offer this service to non-corporate users for free. In my experience, this is a common method of handling business on-line. My only gripe with this software is the amount of time it takes to update all of my systems... not fun !!! I am also an incurable conspiracy theorist and have long thought that there are many "conflicts of interest" in the computer and on-line world... I often wonder, for instance, why hard drive prices seemed to drop very sharply and suddenly when it was known that the new operating systems from Microsoft (and the programs and software running on them) would need massive amounts of memory, just to load the programs ! As well, I have always thought there was something very peculiar about the whole anti-virus business... These software companies NEED to have viruses to fight... or there is no business... http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread353619/pg1 Regards, Kevin. He can only do one look-up on the internet though he resets the cable modem it's only good for one shot, i.e., he googles the error he received (IE cannot display the web page), that takes him to the links but he can't go further until he resets, restarts, etc., and by then he loses his links to find a cure. This just started happening. He always keeps on top of all updates. Restore didn't work. That one shot bit has me stumped. Any ideas? The computer seems to work fine other than that, so I was wondering if it was more ISP (U-Verse) related. Did think about uninstalling IE7 and try IE6 to see if 7 may be corrupted.
