Hi Tom, Thanks for the input. Unless I missed something, I dont think that would work if the disk doesnt spin which I am presuming it doesnt given the error message of disk not ready? On the other hand I will definitely file that hint for future reference. Thanks. ***snip*** Thanks for the input. ***snip*** Ah ha! I must have missed the e-mail about the drive not even whirrling up. Re-seating stuff inside might fix that problem, eh? Tom
Hi Kevin, Thank you very much for the information. I will have to double check with my son but I dont think there was any Device Error listed. He did reinstall the driver but it didn't make any difference. The drive has been working fine up until now. I had a look at the link you sent but neither my son or I are confident about checking inside the pc so I guess I'll have to take it to a techie. Thanks again. Hi Listers, My son is using a very old pc with W.98SE and the CD Rom Drive suddenly stopped recognising disks. The error message is Drive not accessable, device not ready. The O/S is W.98SE The drive shows up in My Computer and opens and shuts okay. Any help much appreciated. Baby steps please. Judith
*snip* Thank you very much for the information. I will have to double check with my son but I dont think there was any Device Error listed. *snip* This may sound way to easy - but it could work. Put a laser lens cleaner disk in and let it clean the lens. Have seen this "fix" many a cdrom problem. Tom
Hi Judith, It is difficult to tell from afar, but it may be as simple as opening up the box and cleaning it out, remove the wires from the CD-ROM and put them back in the exact same place. There may be dirty contacts. It would be a good idea to review the inside of the system and make sure the drives are connected properly... http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml You could also check in the device manager to see if there are any device errors... It could also be that the drive is just no good anymore... sorry ! Has the system been working fine up until now ??? Regards, Kevin. Yes you have to register with familyrelatives first or it chucks you back to do so anyway, you can register for free anyway and as I said there are some free databases on there so its a worthwhile exercise anyway Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I haven't yet, Nivard. Colleagues The next computer meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 1 June 2009. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for a 7.30pm start. The subject of the talk at 7.30pm is "Find Your Past on Find My Past - how FMP is growing", which will be presented by Alex McGahey. The latter is a member of the society's computer group panel. All members are welcome to attend the meeting. There is no need for potential attendees to be interested in computers for their own sake, but as a tool to research on FMP and other sites. As Oxfordshire Studies now have access to FMP for use by the public, this is an opportunity to see what is available on FMP and how to use it before any visit. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. Hi : With CCleaner, you can selectively choose what you want to delete. Try deselecting everything and turning on only a few at a time. Then run it again. It sounds like there are a lot of temporary files in some location on your system that CCleaner is wrestling with ! Regards, Kevin. Thanks, Kevin. Yes, the mssage is just like the one you quoted, only different numbers. I delete my temporary files often. I seldom browse the internet--no time. Thanks again.
Serpently <g> http://www.familyrelatives.com/ Its free to register and use the overseas records if you want to try it out, the rest are pay per view The overseas indexes are for Army BMD, Consular etc You need to register first or you are thrown back to register if you go direct to the index and try and select an image Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > Do you have a link to the site? > > Regards, > Kevin.
What has probably happened, is that you have a system on which no temporary files have ever been deleted, so there are MANY of them. I have seen some systems take hours to delete Internet Explorer's Temporary Internet Files. Your settings for IE Temporary Internet File saving are probably very high, as well. Do you use Internet Explorer to browse the Internet? If so... what version ? Here is info on deleting the Temporary Files in Internet Explorer 7... http://optimizepc.info/how-to/clean-browser-internet-files/ie7/ Regards, Kevin. Hi all Not sure if anyone can help I have been using firefox for a while but have come up against a problem viewing Djvu images on one family history site It triggers a suggestion to download a plug in but no plug in can be found, automatically or manually, does anyone know if one is available anywhere? I have looked at findmypast who also use Djvu and have downloaded the plug in and installed it but it does not seem to work with the other site Any ideas? It works quite happily under IE Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
When I try to run the above program, and click on "analyze", it says "Analyzis cancelled" and "This analysis is incomplete". Why is this and how can I get it to work? Thanks much for your help.

Hi Bernard, Thanks for the link I have just checked it out. It certainly would be a much simpler way of getting the information on line in a usable format.
