As a number of people have said - "horses for courses". Decide what you need the web-mail for, what you want to keep on your computer or leave on-line, etc etc - then make your choice. Chris

    3. Hi Bud You will I hope forgive me for asking but how can not getting your own posts cut down on spam? You are not very likely to send spam to yourself are you? I tend not to anyway <vbg> If you post a lot to lists and had to check each one in the archives you could spend all day checking , its much simpler to have a copy of your own post surely Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > >> Hi Lila >> >> Yes gmail in its infinite wisdom deems that it does not accept any >> posting >> from your own address "to save clutter in your inbox", which is clearly >> quite ridiculous, particularly with list postings > > Everyone has different ideas, and I think this is a GOOD one, > as it helps cut down on spam. > > But you CAN always go to rootsweb.com, and check the posts for each list > there.

    3. Hi Lila Yes gmail in its infinite wisdom deems that it does not accept any posting from your own address "to save clutter in your inbox", which is clearly quite ridiculous, particularly with list postings There is a work around which originally took some digging out as neither gmail or sky (which is gmail under a sky name) would accept could be achieved If anyone wants a copy let me know This works with OE and gmail, I can't vouch for others It also means you get a copy of every post you make but frankly I prefer that now Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > There was patter on another list some months ago about gmail. 3. Hi Lila, I don't have to receive my own message, as the one I sent is listed in the hierarchy of messages for the topic at hand. If, for some reason, the message does not get through, as is the case when I forget to sent a text message and erroneously send an HTML message... I get a message back saying that my post was refused. So, I would be complaining if I did receive my own post back, as it would then show up as a duplicate. I hope you understand this. 3. I asked for help with deleting Temporary Internet Files, and received the answer. When I attempted to reply, my 'thank you' message was bounced because it contained HTML which rootsweb was unable to strip away. Since I didn't add any HTML myself, I don't know exactly what happened, but I wanted to say thank you to those who replied to my plea. Lila

    3. Hi Beth If I understand you correctly When you scan the document it treats it as a picture, the words are not distinguishable as its part of said picture, where you save it to is immaterial, its still a picture You would need to OCR the document (optical character recognition) most scanners come with some form of OCR software even cheapies Depending upon the capabilities of the OCR software it may do a servicable job or not, some are much better than others There may be a better way but the aboves one to try Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > I have Windows XP Home, and HP psc2210 all-in-one. You may have the option to scan either documents or photographs and may be able to switch to documents. That doesn't guarantee they'll be saved as Word docs -- mine saves as PDFs -- but at least you'll have text. HTH Lynne

    3. HI Beth As someone already suggested, I think, you need an OCR program to get a text document that you can edit, which you cannot do with a regular scan or a PDF file. I checked and your printer has the "Iris OCR" program as part of its software. If you have an on-line manual, look up OCR to see how it works I have found that OCR software has improved immensely over the years. 3. Hi Beth, 2 Questions... 1. Do you need to copy/paste portions of the scanned document? - if so, you can use a "screen capture" type of software. I use a program called Snag-It, but you need to pay for this. That said, I do feel it is worth every penny. You can find some free alternatives here... http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-screen-capture-utility.htm 2. Do you need to copy text from the scanned document so it is available for you to paste into another application ? - if so... then you will need the OCR software that Nivard mentioned... it is software that, most likely, came with your HP All-In-One Regards, Kevin.
