I have a Dell laptop Inspiron E1505 running Microsoft, IE and always used standby if I had to leave for an hour or more and when I get back to the computer it won't come back on. Sometimes I can reclose the top and reopen and it will come back on sometimes I have to hold the power button down and start all over. In Control Panel under Power I have it checked to go to standby when I close the top and until this week that worked fine. I have also tried going to Start and when the choice comes up to Standby, Turn off, or Restart I click Standby, wait for it to finish 'preparing to standby' then close the top and that doesn't work either. Any one know what I should do? Bobbie
I forgot to change to plain text, and my earlier post to this thread was bounced by Rootsweb: "My opinion is that the list in question is being moderated for a (probably good) reason known to the admin. Nothing comes out on the list for a long time, then suddenly there's a deluge of messages including those gatewayed from the corresponding message board. Since he/she probably has a good reason for monitoring (I shouldn't have used the word "censor") it's okay--but another reason for needing one's own posts come back on the list." And again, not all lists are Rootsweb lists and have archives. Hi Kay, Have you recently made any changes to your system like Driver Updates, New Software installation, Windows Updates ??? Here is a solution that seems interesting... (I know it looks daunting, but if you have Win XP or Vista, start reading step 3; you will need to know how to navigate in Windows Explorer or have someone help you; I know what the user is talking about with respect to HP Support !!!) http://www.fixya.com/support/t365181-scanner_work_but_printer For those experienced scanning problem on Windows 2000, try this: 1. After you have installed the HP C4280 installation files, look for HPQSCNVW.exe (i.e. HP Scanning App file for Windows 2000), it is likely stored here ("C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqscnvw.exe") or under a Hewlett-Packard folder. If you can't the above file, try to look for this file: "C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqdirec.exe", similar scanning application file. 2. Create a shortcut to this application file on your desktop, and once you have plugged in your C4280 USB to your PC, launch this app and the scanning will work. The problem you encountered was due after installation, HP's app file somehow didn't manage to be created as an icon or shortcut on the PC, due to some compatibility issue with Windows 2000. 3. For those on Windows XP and Vista, if you still encountered scanning problem, e.g. USB not connected, etc. Follow steps 1 and 2 above, but look for: HPQSCNVW.exe or HPQTRA08.exe files instead in step 1. It took me a week of continuous calling to HP helpline, till I came across one tech support guy whom knew this solution. Good luck! Regards, Kevin. Lila, You may always check the list's archives to see if your posting did indeed get to the list. Having you own messaged come to you as well as all other list subscribers is, in my opinion, much easier, but you *can* always check the archives for any activity on the list. Here is the URL to check the archives of any Rootsweb list: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ Sharon Dulcich --------------------------------------- In a message dated 6/24/2009 3:43:28 P.M. I have a HP Photo Smart C4280 all in one printer. It worked fine until today, it will print, it will copy but it will not scan, just tells me "USB is not connected". I have checked and all the USB is plugged in. Anyone have any idea of what is causing this, I don't have a clue. K
Thanks for the Help Desk reference, which I printed. It refers to a "Tools menu" which I can't find, and the other instructions are much more complicated probably because Hotmail has changed its format since the instructions were written. Actually, there's a Plain Text option at the top which I clicked on, and that was all that was necessary. Unless, of course, jumping faces or advertising in HTML are added at the end of this... I've been using Rich Text for all messages with no problem except the Thank You, and I suspect that there was some kind of ad at the bottom. Found this through a search... To enable Plain Text editing in Windows Live Hotmail classic: * Click New[/link] on your Windows Live Hotmail classic Today page. * Follow the Show rich text link if available. o To switch to plain text, click Show plain text. It appears that it's somewhat difficult to use plain text with many web-based email programs, and particularly difficult with Hotmail. The instructions given by RootsWeb's Help Desk are at <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html> and those for Hotmail sound pretty confusing to me. Perhaps someone on the list knows a better way to set Hotmail to plain text and keep it there. Google mail will not let a user set the default to plain text and it can be hard to remember to toggle the formatting, but at least it's easy to do. Best wishes, Lynne
Lila, list admins are permitted to moderate individuals for just cause, or an entire list during short periods of emergency, but an entire list should not be moderated for any lengthy period of time. If you believe that an entire list is being moderated for an extended period of time, bring the problem to the attention of the Listmaster. You can write to him via the Help Desk page at http://preview.tinyurl.com/knwd95 Best wishes, Lynne On Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 10:00 PM, Lila Garner <lilagarner@hotmail.com> wrote: > > Yes, it is sent, but when it doesn't come back to you through the list, you don't know if it ever got to the list. Yes, it is sent, but when it doesn't come back to you through the list, you don't know if it ever got to the list. Some list admins censor every post before allowing it to go through. My sentiments exactly, Nivard--and someone else mentions non-Rootsweb lists that have no archives to search, a whole other kettle of fish. Hi Susan? Sledge hammer and nut spring to mind <g> As I said I don't have the problem and am more than happy with my set up which means I get a copy of every mail I send, I could set up rules to divert those that don't have rootsweb in the address but think thats overkill As there is already a sent folder where a copy goes, and even if it were possible (which I can't see at present as rules work on mail coming in rather than going out) it would merely duplicate the sent folder, the aim (which I have) is to have a copy of all list postings (including my own) into my inbox rather than a separate folder Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > You don't actually need to do that. You don't actually need to do that. You simply set up a folder in your Local Folders group called Sent mail and just get the computer to put a copy of all your sent messages into that folder. It should appear somewhere in the options of your mail program. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 6:15 PM Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Web Mail > Hi Andy > > Yes that works too but as it brings in the fallibility of the human mind, > it > is prone to failure and forgetfulness <g> > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > >> >> If I'm sending something to a list using G-mail I also send a copy to >> another of my webmail addresses.

Hi Andy Yes that works too but as it brings in the fallibility of the human mind, it is prone to failure and forgetfulness <g> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > If I'm sending something to a list using G-mail I also send a copy to > another of my webmail addresses.
Or, you can retrieve it from your 'sent mail' folder. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andy Hatchett" <aghatchett3rd@yahoo.com> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 11:54 AM Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Web Mail > > If I'm sending something to a list using G-mail I also send a copy to > another of my webmail addresses. > > --- On Tue, 6/23/09, BudScan <budscan@gmail.com> wrote: > >> From: BudScan <budscan@gmail.com> >> Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Web Mail >> To: computers@rootsweb.com >> Date: Tuesday, June 23, 2009, 3:35 AM >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> >> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> >> Sent: Tuesday, June 23, 2009 1:16 AM >> Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Web Mail >> >> >> > Hi Lila >> > >> > Yes gmail in its infinite wisdom deems that it does >> not accept any posting >> > from your own address "to save clutter in your inbox", >> which is clearly >> > quite ridiculous, particularly with list postings >> >> Everyone has different ideas, and I think this is a GOOD >> one, >> as it helps cut down on spam. >> >> But you CAN always go to rootsweb.com, and check the posts >> for each list >> there. >> >> >> >> >> >> >> >> :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: >> >> Take pity on Digest subscribers and remember to SNIP when >> replying. >> >> :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: >> >> >> >> >> ------------------------------- >> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >> COMPUTERS-request@rootsweb.com >> with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the >> subject and the body of the message >> > > > > > > > > :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: > > Take pity on Digest subscribers and remember to SNIP when replying. > > :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > COMPUTERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

If you can scan to PDF, there is a free program called PDF Undo which will turn it into a word document where you can grab any part of it you like - images or text.
